This review will examine proficiencies in written and aural theory, keyboard skills, applied music and will determine the student's eligibility for upper level (Junior-Senior) courses. A grade of C or better is required in all major courses. 1. This course provides students with an overview of the practical applications and theoretical approaches to the study of communication through an exploration of four key areas: interpersonal, intercultural, group, and public communication. Beyond a study of the contemporary issues and challenges in the field, students will utilize their accumulated knowledge and skills in the production and presentation of a piece of original research. F, S. b. POLI 205 Introductory Statistics for the Political and Social Sciences Number of credits: 3 Prerequisite(s): MATH 130 or equivalent. Corequisite(s): None. This course is to be considered for the core curriculum: Core Goal 2: Knowledge of Mathematical Concepts. Primary Goal: This course may be taken as an elective. Proposed catalog description: POLI 205 Introductory Statistics for the Political and Social Sciences. (3) (Prereq: MATH 130 or equivalent) An introduction to the application of statistical analysis in contemporary political and social science. Particular attention will paid to the use of quantitative methods in the study of public opinion, voting behavior, public policy, and other subject areas. Topics include: measurement theory, measures of central tendency, dispersion, probability, sampling distributions, correlation, and hypothesis testing with bivariate and multivariate models. Selected covered topics include the constitutional powers of Congress, the President, and the Supreme Court; federalism; the Commerce Clause; and substantive due process. F, S. 3. (2) (Restricted to music majors in the teacher preparation concentration) This course is designed for undergraduate music majors in the teacher preparation track who are vocal majors to prepare them for teaching secondary students in the instrumental classroom. They will study and practice instrumental rehearsal techniques and strategies, lesson planning, evaluative procedures, and standard instrumental repertoire. S. Estimated enrollment: 10. The course emphasizes teaching skill development, musical characteristics, needs of early adolescents, and young adults, performance-based assessment, technology, classroom management, continued portfolio development, and field experiences at the upper two development levels. Laboratory exercises introduce the student to the diversity of birds with emphasis on the avifauna of North America. Topics include field identification of species, morphological and behavioral adaptions for feeding and locomotion, bird assemblages of the southeastern United States, and censusing procedures for estimating population densities.
