centre for arts Therapies research The, Department of Psychology announces the creation of its new Centre for Arts Therapies Research (CATR). CATR Director is Dr Beatrice Allegranti. Throughout the year will be a series of seminars and symposia including research presentations, live performances, film screenings and debates. CATR heralds a new phase for the development of Arts Therapies research within the university and within the wider social context. CATR moves in line with twenty first century progressive paradigms; it promotes integrated and complex understandings of the intersections between art, science, psychological and psychotherapeutic processes. The Department of Psychology is excellently placed as a crucible for CATR as it is the only European university that offers a suite of all five arts therapies practitioner training programmes at MA level. Moreover, CATR is defined by its multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary team and involves both staff and student (MA and PhD) members in art, dance movement, drama, music and play therapies. OUR DIRECTOR Beatrice is a hybrid practitioner and researcher. She is Reader in Dance Movement Psychotherapy and Convener for MA in Dance Movement Psychotherapy at the. Beatrice s experience encompasses both artistic (UK and international dance performance and film) and clinical dance movement psychotherapy and supervision (UK NHS and international adult mental health work). Beatrice s interdisciplinary background in contemporary dance, choreography and clinical dance movement psychotherapy forms the backbone of her work which explores the relationship between dance, movement, human development, science and wellbeing through practice based research, dance and film works that focus on bodies as knowledge and the politics of moving bodies in interaction.
Suzanne B. Hanser MUSic therapy in integrative medicine
Description Thanks to technological advances, the effect of music on psychological, neurological and immunological factors is becoming understood and documented. Dr. Hanser will describe the psychoneuroimmunology of music therapy by discussing the malleability of the brain as it responds to music, the role of music in managing stress and pain, and the ramifications of these mechanisms on the immune system and overall health. Concomitant with this enhanced knowledge base is a revolution in healthcare. Integrative medicine is welcoming music therapy services to help patients relieve pain, manage symptoms and reduce stress. As a result, music therapy is becoming integrated into medical settings, and also in wellness and prevention programs. Live demonstration and clinical examples illustrate how health outcomes may be achieved through music therapy strategies. Suzanne s Work Suzanne B. Hanser is founding chair of the Music Therapy Department at Berklee College of Music. She is Past President of both the World Federation of Music Therapy and American Music Therapy Association. Dr. Hanser serves as music therapist at the Leonard P. Zakim Center for Integrative Therapies at Dana- Farber Cancer Institute, and Resident Scholar at the Women s Studies Research Center at Brandeis University. She received a National Research Service Award from the National Institute on Aging. She is the author of The New Music Therapist s Handbook, and Manage Your Stress and Pain, a book and CD with co-author Dr. Susan Mandel. She has published numerous book chapters and written articles in such diverse journals as Nursing Home Medicine, Journal of Gerontology, Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing, Coping and Music Therapy Perspectives, among others. In 2006 she was named by the Boston Globe as one of eleven Bostonians Changing the World. In 2009 she was awarded the Sage Publications Prize for her article, From ancient to integrative medicine: Models for music therapy. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Music Therapy Association in November, Monday 12 th November Contact Beatrice Allegranti B.Allegranti@roehampton.ac.uk Scan for more information online
Hagit Yakira DANCE FOR SOUL SAKE
Description A creative workshop- lecture demonstration a combination of dance and Dance Movement Therapy, demonstrating the way Hagit combines the two disciplines into a creative research and practice. A combination of her practical and academic work. Hagit s Work Hagit s approach in general to the topics she work on, as well as to the movement research, is based on autobiography and emotions, and is being informed by her background as a dance movement therapist alongside her background as a performer and choreographer. She is preparing now a PhD in Choreography. In it she looks into the role of autobiography in choreography; she searches the emotional as well as the inter-human relation perspectives. Hagit works with personal stories and memories of inter-human relationships; but also with the emotions and sensations that emerge through the creative process and in relation to the subject matter with which one works. Biography Hagit is a choreographer, performer and dance teacher based in London. She graduated from the Music and Dance Academy in Jerusalem, Israel in 1999 and completed her MA in European Theatre Dance at Trinity Laban, London in She has also been a qualified Dance Movement Therapist since 2003, and she is working now on her PhD in Choreography at Trinity Laban, researching the notion of choreographing autobiographies. After years of performing and teaching, she has been recently developing her own choreographic work. So far she has created six works, two of them were awarded: first prize for Oh Baby in the Kajaani Choreography Competition, Finland 2009, and second prize for Somewhere between a self and an other in the Burgos New York Choreography Competition (New Dance Trend Category), Spain Hagit s aim is to develop a personal approach, which is based on close collaboration with various artists working within different art forms. 8 Yeva Feldman Finding my body; finding myself
Description A reflexive research project exploring the impact of embodiment in a Gestalt Dance Movement Psychotherapy group with women who suffer from eating disorders. In this research paper I am reflecting on how embodiment in a Gestalt Dance Movement Psychotherapy group impacts on women with eating disorders and their relationship to their bodies. The most striking and prominent problem for individuals with eating disorders is their destructive relationship with their bodies. Eating disorders have recently been understood and treated as psychosomatic illnesses in which the emphasis is on the split experienced between body and mind (Zerbe, 1993; Silberman-Deihl, et al, 1985). One of the main principles of this group is that through embodiment, a connection between body and mind can be re-established. Yeva s Work Yeva Feldman is a Gestalt Psychotherapist, UKCP and a Senior Dance Movement Psychotherapist, ADMP UK. She integrates these two modalities into her practice with individuals with eating disorders in a hospital setting as well as in her private practice. She is an ADMP UK approved supervisor and a lecturer on the MA Dance Movement Psychotherapy programme at Roehampton University. She has also taught on other training programmes and offers workshops on topics such as embodied approach to working with individuals with eating disorders, working with polarities and difficult emotions, and mobilising through movement. She has presented the pilot study of her work with adults with eating disorders at the 2012 UKCP research conference and is currently writing an article based on this research which is in press. She was workshop coordinator and council member for ADMP for several years. Yeva has three children and lives in London.
