2 Jane Cain, AAGO, Charlotte Chapter Dean Office: (704) A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Happy New Year! It s a new school year, a new choir year, and a new AGO year. New music, new friends, new challenges; the possibilities seem unlimited. Your Board and program committee, ably led by Michael Lehtinen and aided by committee members Kaitlyn Davros and Nancy Watson, have been busy planning a variety of programs for the coming year. There is something for everyone: organ concerts, choral concerts, workshops, social events. Whether you are a full-time professional or a part-time organist or an organ lover, you will find something valuable and interesting this year. Our first event, the Progressive Dinner, is one of the perennial favorites. This is a great opportunity to bring some choir members, young piano students, or any music lover, and introduce them to the organ. Three churches, three organs, a three course meal, lots of fun. I like the fact that, for me anyway, it s off the beaten path and I will get to visit three new places. Can you bring a carful of people? If you did not attend any chapter events last year, how about coming to at least one this season? If you attended one or two, how about setting a goal of doubling that number? Scott Recital Organist Patrick A. Scott is Assistant Organist-Choirmaster at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta, GA. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance from Birmingham- Southern College, a Master of Music in Organ Performance and Sacred Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Organ Performance, both from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Scott served as Associate Director of Music at Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte prior to his current position. At the 2014 AGO national convention in Boston he was awarded both first prize and the audience prize in the AGO National Competition in Organ Improvisation. While in Boston, Dr. Scott was also awarded second prize in the Schoenstein Hymn Playing Competition. He has recorded a CD through the Raven label on the Æolean-Skinner organ of Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC, the organ formerly at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Your Board at work.... Your Charlotte AGO executive board met on August 14, 2017 at the home of our Dean, Jane Cain, where we also shared a dinner together. Important business matters that were discussed include: Finalizing Chapter programs for the coming year Update on Chapter Committees and their chairpersons Update on the Yearbook Update on the Newsletter Update on Yearbook and Newsletter advertisements Update and discussion of the budget Take note! Free organ music Our recently deceased member Betsy Johnson has donated her organ and piano music and books to members of the chapter. It will be available for free at the last stop of the Progressive Dinner at Lowell Presbyterian church.

4 An Invitation from the Greater Columbia AGO Chapter On Saturday, October 11, The Greater Columbia AGO Chapter is sponsoring an organ crawl to Charlotte to see three recent installations of pipe organs. The Greater Columbia Chapter sponsored a similar crawl eleven years ago, so this tour, arranged by dual member Dr. David Lowry, will feature these three organs installed since then. Members of the Charlotte AGO Chapter are invited to join us for this enjoyable day. St. John s Baptist Church is a remarkable congregation with a fine building near Center City Charlotte in the Elizabeth community. Complementing a fine music program of choirs for children and adults is St. John s 2008 Létourneau Organ, Opus 113, 3 manuals, 35 stops, 43 ranks, installed in a favorable acoustic. Providence United Methodist Church on Providence Road in 2013 saw the installation of the Æolian- Skinner Opus 1472 that was built for the Kennedy Center concert hall in Washington, DC. The removal, transport and rebuilding was accomplished magnificently by Phil Parkey OrganBuilders of Norcross, Georgia. The large sanctuary provides a wonderful ambiance for this large, exciting organ. The organ is 3 manuals, 62 stops on the original console. St. Peter s Episcopal Church, directly in Center City Charlotte, is an 1895 edifice that was completely renovated in 2009 resulting in a most favorable space for the Episcopal liturgies. The crowning achievement is the Fisk Organ, Opus 136, 3 manuals, 32 independent voices, 41 ranks, completed in Since 1992 the church has supported a fine Choir School and supported a history of fine music for over a century. The tentative itinerary is St. John s at 10 a.m. and Providence at 11:30 a.m. Following a lunch break, the tour concludes at St. Peter s Episcopal at 2:30 p.m. We will notify you if any of the times have to be altered. Please join us on our visit to Charlotte and its array of spectacular pipe organs.

10 Member Recommendations: Organ Music for Fall Festivals Communion Hymns for Organ, by Emma Lou Diemer The American Guild of Organists named Emma Lou Diemer as composer of the year for Communion Hymns for Organ is an outstanding collection of pieces based on communion hymns. Some of the settings are appropriate for use during administration of communion. In particular, We Come as Guests Invited is a favorite of one of our chapter members for World Communion Sunday. This book is available in paperback at amazon.com as well as at many of your local music stores. Nun danket alle Gott: Marche triomphale, Op. 65, No. 59 by Sigfried Karg-Elert Nun danket alle Gott belongs to Karg-Elert s great multi-volume Op. 65 collection of 66 improvisations on chorales or German hymns. The collection was first published in 1909 and dedicated to the great organist Alexandre Guilmant. Nun danket alle Gott, known to most of us as the popular Christian hymn Now thank we all our God, belongs to Karg-Elert s group of pieces composed in celebration of the Harvest. It is a favorite of one of our chapter members for Thanksgiving services. The score, currently in the public domain, is available from the Petrucci Music Library. Apparition de I église éternelle, by Olivier Messiaen Messiaen s famour Apparition of the eternal church was written in The piece features large chords over a throbbing bass line, which repeats a simple rhythmic pattern. The piece is programmatic in that it describes the appearance and disappearance of the eternal church. The piece is published by Henry Lemoine and is available from your local music store. It is a favorite of one of our chapter members for All Saints Day.
