Orchestra Performance, Firebird Suite
About the Firebird Suite I. INTRODUCTION AND DANCE OF THE FIREBIRD The Suite opens with a mysterious Introduction. While wandering in the forest at night, Prince Ivan encounters a magic Firebird. The Prince is captivated by the Firebird's beauty and captures her. However, the Prince takes pity on the Firebird and sets her free. In gratitude, the Firebird gives the Prince one of her feathers and promises to aid him in his hour of need. Characteristics: The Firebird s appearance is portrayed by colorful, radiant trills.
About the Firebird Suite II. DANCE OF THE PRINCESSES The Prince comes to the courtyard of an enchanted castle where he finds thirteen beautiful Princesses, captives of the evil magician Kastchei. The Princesses warn Prince Ivan not to enter the castle, for Kastchei has the power to turn intruders to stone. The Prince boldly ignores their warnings and enters the castle. Characteristics: The princess dance begins with the flutes softly singing a theme that will return in the majestic Finale. The oboe introduces the delicate melody of the Princesses' dance.
About the Firebird Suite III. INFERNAL DANCE OF KING KASTCHEI The Prince is suddenly confronted by Kastchei's horrible servants, and ultimately, the magician himself. Kastchei tries to turn the Prince into stone, but the hero produces the Firebird's magic feather. The Firebird appears and forces Kastchei and his followers into a frenetic dance. Characteristics: A violent chord quickly shatters the tranquility of the previous section. The bassoons and horns chant a menacing, syncopated figure. The entire dance maintains a frightening level of energy and intensity that subsides only after a closing orchestral tirade.
About the Firebird Suite IV. BERCEUSE When Kastchei and his followers are exhausted, the Firebird lulls them to sleep. Characteristics: Solo bassoon, accompanied by harp and strings, plays a haunting melody. An ascending harp glissando leads to a more emotional section, followed by a return of the bassoon melody.
About the Firebird Suite V. FINALE Kastchei and his retinue are destroyed. All of the prisoners are set free, including the Thirteenth Princess, whom the Prince weds. Characteristics: Over string tremolos, a solo horn plays a variation of the theme that was first presented by the flutes in the Princesses' Round. Other members of the orchestra incorporate the melody, as the Finale builds to a grandiose climax.
Marc Chagall: Firebird, 1945
Marc Chagall Chagall designed the costumes for the 1945 performance of the Firebird Suite. The costumes were used by the New York City Ballet who used the costume designs until 2013.
