Jeffrey Barker Associate Principal Flute Seattle Symphony A Seattle native, Jeffrey Barker began his position as Associate Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony in the 2015 2016 season.

He has performed as guest principal flute of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Oregon Symphony, and as a substitute in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Previously, he played as Principal Flute of the Boise Philharmonic since He has performed as guest principal flute of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Oregon Symphony, and as a substitute in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Jeffrey is passionate about connecting with audiences of all ages and backgrounds, collaborating with the Seattle Symphony s Education and Community Engagement team in a variety of programs including the Lullaby Project, Sensory Friendly Concerts, and Tiny Tots. Jeffrey received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music under the instruction of Bonita Boyd, and his Master of Music degree from Carnegie Mellon University, where his teachers were Jeanne Baxtresser and Alberto Almarza. John R. Beck Principal Percsussion Winston-Salem Symphony John R. Beck is the principal percussionist of the Winston-Salem Symphony and performs with the Greensboro Symphony, Brass Band of Battle Creek, Philidor Percussion Group, and the Blue Mountain Ensemble. He has been a member of the faculty at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts since 1998 and joined the music faculty at Wake Forest University in A former member and tour soloist with the United States Marine Band, John also performed regularly with the National and Baltimore Symphonies, Washington and Baltimore Operas, and the Theater Chamber Players of the Kennedy Center while living in Washington, D.C. He has toured the United States as a xylophone soloist with the Jack Daniel's Silver Cornet Band, Brass Band of Battle Creek, and the New Sousa Band. Beck is a Past President of the Percussive Arts Society and a Remo Health RHTYHMS group drumming facilitator. He presents clinics endorsing Yamaha percussion instruments, Zildjian cymbals, and Innovative mallets.

2 Jody Chaffee Flute II and Piccolo Chair, Community Engagement Director, Librarian, Personnel Manager Firelands Symphony Orchestra and Chorale (OH) Jody Chaffee is a musician with the Firelands Symphony Orchestra in Sandusky, Ohio. For over 15 years, she has held the chairs of Flute II and Piccolo. In addition, she serves as Personnel Manager, Librarian and Community Engagement Director for the Orchestra and newly formed Firelands Symphony Chorale. As Music Education and Community Engagement Director, Jody creates and presents engaging programming for all ages, ranging from infancy through adulthood. Concentrating on ten school districts in the Firelands area, Jody delivers a progression of learning from pre-school through third grade, introducing students to the wonderful world of music! Following students through their elementary education, she works closely with middle and high school band directors to continue their instruction, encouraging a life-long interest in music. These programs put Jody in contact with over 5,000 students on a yearly basis! An Elder College lecture series at Bowling Green State University Firelands is a new initiative that brings Jody in contact with enrolled seniors in her community sharing information ranging from musical instruments to upcoming concert programming and composers to the health benefits of including music in one s life. In addition to responsibilities for the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, Jody participates in numerous professional performance activities. She is part of a professional flute quartet, High Frequency, which performs for a variety of events in and around the community. She plays various woodwind instruments for high school and professional musicals, community engagements and church events. Jody served as a band director for six years and graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor s degree in Music Education, still holding a current Ohio teaching license. Jody, along with her husband Ben, resides in North Fairfield with their three children, Benjamin, Lydia and Bryan. In her spare time, she serves as PTO President for the South Central Elementary School and is a member of the Principal Advisory Committee for South Central Middle School. Jody also volunteers her time with church functions as well as community events. 2

3 Erin Hannigan Principal Oboe Dallas Symphony Orchestra Oboist Erin Hannigan is Principal Oboe of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Before coming to Dallas, she was a member of the Rochester Philharmonic from Summer performances have included those with the Music in the Mountains Festival in Durango, CO and the Mainly Mozart Festival in San Diego, CA. Orchestral performances outside Dallas include engagements as guest principal oboist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Erin has performed as a soloist multiple times with the Dallas Symphony, and has also appeared with the Round Top Festival Orchestra, Shreveport Symphony, the Hershey (PA) Symphony, the Music in the Mountains Festival Orchestra, and the Meadows Symphony Orchestra of Southern Methodist University. Ms. Hannigan has been a member of the Southern Methodist University faculty since 2002 where she is Adjunct Associate Professor of Oboe. She was previously a faculty member at the Eastman School of Music as Instructor of Baroque oboe from She has been on the faculty of the Festival Institute at Round Top for 14 years and has appeared for masterclasses for the National Repertory Orchestra, National Orchestral Institute, NYO2 (The National Youth Orchestra). Ms. Hannigan's most recent CD (2017) recording is of Jeremy Gill's Serenada Concertante, a piece she commissioned with funding from the Grant for Principal Musicians of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. She also has three CDs on the Crystal Records label: A two-volume set containing "Zelenka: Six Chamber Sonatas" which was released in October 2012 (CD 821 and 822), following her first solo CD From Hafiz to Firewing (and Beyond) which was released in June, 2008 (CD 820). With a passion for animals in need and a strong belief that the future of classical music lies in our connection to the communities in which we live, Ms. Hannigan founded an annual event called the Concert for Kindness, an arts extravaganza which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for homeless animals in need in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Ms. Hannigan attended the Oberlin Conservatory where she studied with James Caldwell. She received her Master s degree and the prestigious Performer s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music where she was a student of Richard Killmer. 3

4 Juan R. Ramírez Hernández Violin Atlanta Symphony Orchestra A central figure in the Atlanta musical community for decades, the violinist, composer and conductor Juan R. Ramírez- Hernández began his musical education in Mexico, later moving to the United States to study with Joseph Silverstein at the New England Conservatory. His studies with Henryk Szeryng began at the age of fourteen, and continued as he became his principal mentor in Mexico, the U.S. and Europe. Under the mentoring of the conductor Leon Barzin Ramírez was the recipient of both the Serge Koussevitzky and Leonard Bernstein Wards at the Tanglewood Music Festival. Mr. Ramírez has performed and conducted in numerous countries throughout Europe and Asia, as well as in Israel and Mexico. The distinguished composerconductor Gunther Schuller stated his unqualified faith in Mr. Ramírez as a violinist and a musical leader of great artistic integrity and noted that whatever he undertakes is touched by quality. He has won numerous awards and honors along the way, including Lexus Leader of the Arts by WABE Public Radio of Atlanta and WPBA Television for his outstanding contributions, his pursuit of excellence in music and for his initiating and serving several community music organizations in the arts community, the Loridans Arts Award, and the Governor s Award in the Humanities. Known throughout the state as a music advocator and educator, Mr. Ramírez founded Music for Success! - an educational program under the auspices of the Atlanta Virtuosi Foundation in partnership with metro Atlanta educational institutions, providing string training by professional musicians to young elementary and middle school children of many backgrounds. He generously volunteers his time, energy and expertise to music students in the Atlanta area and beyond. Mr. Ramírez has served on the Board of Directors of Childhood Cancer, the Sphinx Organization and the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, and received the World Chamber of Commerce Cultural International Hero Award. He holds the title of Presidential Professor at the University of Michigan, the highest honor given to visiting artists and scholars, recognizing distinguished individuals for their extraordinary achievements. In addition to his extensive career as a performer and conductor Ramírez is also a prolific composer incorporating the sounds of his native Mexico into his works. His compositions include Anahuac for tenor, soprano, winds, strings, guitar and pre-columbian percussion, commissioned in 1993 by the ACOG Cultural Olympiad as part of MEXICO! A Cultural Tapestry. Ramírez Suite Criolla for tenor, soprano, chorus, narrator and orchestra debuted in 1995 at the Hispanic Festival of the Arts, and his Navidad Hispana for solo guitar and orchestra was given its premiere by the Atlanta Symphony photo credit: Teresa PenleySheppard Orchestra with the composer as the guitar soloist. 5 violin, strings and guitar earned critical acclaim in both the U.S. and in Mexico, and in 2008 received its European premiere in Barcelona, Spain. Many of his commissioned compositions have been world premiered in Atlanta, New York, Budapest, and Monaco. Recently his Elegy for violin, cello, piano and soprano was composed for ART-CAN Fundraiser for Pancreatic Cancer in conjunction with members of the Atlanta Ballet, Megan Mashburn, soprano and Armando Luna, chorographer. In 2015 he appeared as Guest Conductor of the Guanajuato Symphony Orchestra and 2016 was featured as a guest composer for the US world premiere of his Suite Latina (2009) for string quartet and string orchestra at the Bellingham Festival of Music in the State of Washington. Mr. Ramírez is the founder and artistic director of the Atlanta Virtuosi Foundation, Buckhead Youth Orchestra, Casa de la Cultura-Atlanta, and music director and conductor of the Atlanta Community Symphony Orchestra, and has been a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra since
