1 8 RIAM Local Centre Woodwnd, Brass & Percusson Syllabus AURAL REQUIREMENTS AND THEORETICAL QUESTIONS REVISED FOR ALL PRACTICAL SUBJECTS AURAL TESTS From Elementary to Grade V ths area s worth a maxmum of 10 marks. Canddates wll be asked to perform the followng tests: Elementary Grade Clap or tap from memory the rhythm of a short two-bar melody n 2/4 or 3/4 tme. The melody wll begn on the frst beat of the bar and the pulse wll be gven. Sng the precse ptch of a sngle note played twce by the examner. Compass Mddle C - octave above. Clap a two-bar rhythm n 3/4 or 4/4 tme. Note values ± + Prelmnary Grade A pece wll be played twce by the examner. Comment whether the second playng was louder/softer or faster/slower. Clap or tap from memory the rhythm of a short two-bar melody n 2/4 or 3/4 tme played three tmes. The melody wll begn on the frst beat of the bar and the pulse wll be gven. Sng from memory a short melodc phrase wthn the frst three notes of the major scale (d r m) played three tmes. The pulse, tonc chord and startng note wll be gven before the frst playng. For grades Prelmnary to V canddates presentng a certfcate or result sheet verfyng that they have passed the Local Centre wrtten Theory & Harmony paper for the same grade as, or hgher than, ther practcal examnaton wll be exempt from the Theory tests and wll be awarded full marks for ths secton. Canddates wll be asked to name and explan the followng n relaton to the peces performed: Elementary Grade Clefs, stave, bar lnes, note values and expresson markngs. Prelmnary Grade Clefs, stave, bar lnes, smple tme sgnatures, note values and expresson markngs. Prmary Grade Clefs, stave, bar lnes, smple tme sgnatures and expresson markngs. Grade I Ptch names, tme sgnatures, note values, expresson markngs and key sgnatures. Grade II Ptch names, tme sgnatures, note values, expresson marks and key sgnatures. In addton, canddates wll be asked to descrbe the character of any of the peces performed (eg lvely, sorrowful, happy, dance-lke, jazzy etc.) Grade III Tme sgnatures, note values, expresson markngs and key sgnatures. As for Grade II, canddates wll be asked to descrbe the character of any of the peces performed (eg lvely, sorrowful, happy, dance-lke, jazzy etc.) Grades IV Tme sgnatures, note values, expresson markngs, and key sgnatures. In addton canddates wll be expected to dentfy the relatve major or mnor of the keys of each pece performed. Canddates wll also be asked to descrbe the style of any of the peces performed: (eg baroque, classcal, romantc, modern). Grade V Tme sgnatures, note values, expresson markngs, key sgnatures and relatve major or mnor of the keys of each pece performed. As for Grade IV, canddates wll be asked to descrbe the style of any of the peces performed. In addton, canddates wll also be asked to dentfy the tonc and domnant of any of the keys n whch the peces are wrtten (atonal peces do not apply).

6 13 Aural Requrements & Theoretcal Questons COMBINED AURAL/THEORETICAL TESTS For Grades VI to VIII canddates presentng a certfcate or result sheet verfyng that they have passed the wrtten Theory & Harmony paper for the same grade as, or hgher than, ther practcal examnaton wll be exempt from the combned Aural/Theoretcal Tests and wll be awarded the full ffteen marks for ths secton. Senor Certfcate canddates nstead wll be awarded the full ten marks n ths secton but wll be requred to partake n the Vva Voce secton of the examnaton whch s worth a maxmum of fve marks. Grade VI Aural/Vsual Observaton: A short pece wll be played twce by the examner, a copy of whch wll be gven to the canddate. The canddate to answer questons as follows: (c) (after frst playng) Name the tonc key of the pece. Keys: C, G, D, F major. A, E, D mnor. Name the relatve major/mnor of the tonc. Descrbe the tme sgnature. Any sgnature usng Ä ± or ±. beats. Gve techncal names for specfed notes (tonc, supertonc, etc) (after frst or second playng) Pont out places of melodc nterest From a lst of suggested textures, choose the most approprate to the pece (eg chordal, two-part, etc). (after second playng) Pont out the poston of obvous cadence ponts. Clap or tap from memory the rhythm of the upper lne of a short two-part phrase usng treble and bass clefs. The pulse wll be gven before the frst playng. The test wll be played three tmes. Sng from memory a short melodc phrase. The pulse, tonc chord and startng note wll be gven before the frst playng. Major second and thrd, Perfect fourth and ffth by () sngng both notes and () descrbng the nterval. Grade VII Aural/Vsual Observaton: A short pece wll be played by the examner, a copy of whch wll be gven to the canddate. The canddate to answer questons as follows: (c) (after frst playng) Name the tonc key of the pece. Keys: Majors and mnors to two sharps and two flats. Name the relatve major/mnor. Name the domnant key. (after frst or second playng) Pont out melodc repetton and sequence. Pont out sectons whch are muscally contrastng. (after second playng) Pont out the poston of a perfect or mperfect cadence. Pont out where the musc modulates to the domnant or relatve of the tonc. Clap or tap from memory the rhythm of the lower lne of a short two-part phrase usng treble and bass clefs. The pulse wll be gven before the frst playng. The test wll be played three tmes. Sng from memory the upper lne of a short two-part phrase (usng treble and bass clefs). The tonc chord and startng note wll be sounded before each playng and the pulse wll be gven. The test wll be played three tmes. Sng at sght a four-bar melody n 3/4 or 4/4 tme. Note values: Ä to

Grade VIII Aural/Vsual Observaton: A short pece wll be played by the examner, a copy of whch wll be gven to the canddate. Name the relatve of the tonc, the domnant and the sub-domnant keys. (after frst or second playng) Identfy whether the pece falls nto two or three natural dvsons. Comment on smlartes or dfferences between these dvsons. (after second playng) Name the type of cadence at a specfed bar (e perfect, mperfect, plagal and nterrupted). Identfy modulaton as beng to the domnant or relatve of the tonc n specfed bars. Sng from memory the lower lne of a short two-part phrase usng treble clef only.
