2 ROGRAM NOTES Much o the history o musical instruments involves human ingenuity to manipulate available materials that are oten inexpensive and considered to be useless or even garbage by some. or example, steel drums ere originally ashioned rom discarded oil drums. This piece uses buckets and cans originally used to play in the urban go-go style, characterized by a ast triple eel common in hip hop music. Go-go drummers are oten street perormers in large cities such as Boston, Washington, D. C. and Ne York City. Alone and in ensembles, they perorm in varied styles and instrumentation, and oten inuse movement and dance as part o perormances. Though this piece begins and ends in a driving rock style, the middle Latin section uses a basic tumbao (pronounced tum-bo ) conga rhythm (on buckets) as ell as a typical bass pattern, diluted or younger players, used in the cha-cha and other Aro-Cuban styles. Wind members play a 3- son ( sohn ) clave ( klah-vay ). There are several claves in Aro- Cuban music, but the orard clave or 3- son clave and the reverse clave or -3 clave are very common and ill serve as an eective introduction or students. NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR ercussion parts in this piece ere ritten or ive-gallon (pickle or paint) bucket, large (30-gallon or so) garbage can, trash can lids and suspended scrap metal. Hoever, parts can also be played on traditional percussion instruments, or a combination o unkyard and traditional instruments o your choosing. Ultimately, choice ill be made on the number o players and the sound you and your students ant. or example, to trash can lids ill provide a nice visual, but crash cymbals ill give the optimal sound, so to players can be used on that part. You ill probably ant to employ as many players as possible to the 5-gallon bucket parts, as this is the snare part that provides back beat the rim o the bucket and typical drumset rhythmic ills. Other members o the band or guest perormers such as administrators and teachers can also be used. The legend belo charts the notation in the score using both unkyard and traditional options. Buckets and cans can be played upside don and resting on the loor (the easiest option), or suspended on cement blocks, ood blocks or instrument stands. Go-go drummers use hatever materials are available, oten simply using rope to attach the 5-gallon buckets to orange road cones, and players oten transport the entire set-up in shopping carts. I you have the staging space and ant to incorporate movement, you can also strap instruments to players by drilling holes in buckets and inserting eye hooks that are astened by nuts on the inside o the bucket or can. Large cans can be suspended rom players by rope, and players can strap on smaller buckets and cans ith bungee cords around the aist. ive-gallon buckets can be played ith medium sticks, but realize that playing on the rims ill ear don sticks aster than regular use; thus, bargain sticks might be considered. Hard elt bass drum mallets are good or the plastic garbage cans, but to ill need to be used or stick clicks, and also i you ant to incorporate visuals such as playing caveman style. You can also duct-tape cloth to ooden doels, hich ill also yield a hearty thud. The band also plays pencils on music stands. Have students avoid striking pencils perpendicular to edges, or pencils ill become damaged quickly. lastic pens proect better and are not damaged, though students may ant to use them to rite in their parts, so I pass them out and collect them or this piece only.
