Student Learning Outcomes: 1. The student will independently research, analyze, and prepare songs from musical theatre repertoire. 2. The student will present songs consistent with fourth-year National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) standards. 3. The student will critique, examine, and defend their creative choices. V. Prerequisite(s): TH 301; audition; or consent of instructor III. Purposes or Objectives of the Course: To develop advanced technical skills necessary to sing musical theatre repertoire in singing To advance the student in the competency levels required for the BFA in Musical Theatre degree program To develop advanced rehearsal skills to learn and develop music independently To develop advanced interpretive skills commensurate to the competency levels required for the BFA in Musical Theatre degree program To develop correct posture, breathing techniques, diction, and knowledge of various genres IV. Expectations of Students and Policies: A. Attendance Students are expected to attend all classes and to complete all assignments for courses in which they are enrolled. Because the course is by appointment, students may reschedule one lesson per term as long as approved in advance by the instructor; unscheduled absences will not be rescheduled. 4 VIII. Basis for Student Evaluation/Grading: Students will prepare/memorize a minimum of eight (8) songs per semester per credit hour. Literature will include and musical theatre repertoire appropriate to the students voice type and the BFA in Musical Theatre degree program. The teacher may assign songs that they feel are appropriate for student growth. Students will be prepared at each lesson with required materials. Preparation should include (but not exclusively): correct notes, rhythms and pitches; lyric analysis; and memorization. Students will perform at multiple masterclasses during the year. Juries will be held at prescheduled times during the end of term. Students will also present song analyses for each song, which should include (but not exclusively): a limited summary of the show; a short summary of the character and how the song fits into the show; other topics may include: research into performance style; history of the period from which the show comes; personal reflections about the student s relationship to the song/why the student choose the selection. Private Voice Lesson grades are based on a combination of: Weekly lesson preparation: 12 Lessons at 5% Points Each: 4 Points for Weekly Improvement (equivalent to an expected three hours of practice) 1 Point for Professionalism/Attitude = 60% Masterclass Performances = 15% Jury Performance = 25% Final Grade will be based on 100% scale (100-90%=A; 80-89%=B, etc.). All of the above evaluations are based on professionalism, participation, promptness, thoroughness, technical/mechanical skills, attitude, and quality. Judging art is difficult and subjective. Nevertheless, it is the primary means by which to evaluate final grades. Therefore, students in this class must be willing to accept the subjective portion of the assessment from the instructor. Masterclass performances will be evaluated and critiqued by your peers and submitted at juries. IX. Miscellaneous Touch Disclosure This course involves the instructor teaching proper ways to use the body for singing/breathing, and to become aware of all body tensions, if any, that might prevent free and easy singing. The instructor may need to touch the student appropriately to point out such tensions in order to help the student free themselves from the physical blocks that will keep them from their singing goal. If there is an issue with physical contact, please talk to the instructor.
