2 March 2013 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series presented by Fri., 3/1: Butch Ross, Mandeville & Richards Butch Ross somehow made the retrograde transition from singer-songwriter with guitar to one of the newest most exciting Appalachian dulcimer virtuosi in the country. He performs appropriate traditional songs and tunes. But he also plays his own and other contemporary songs that ought to be totally inappropriate to the dulcimer (Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Richard Thompson), but somehow manage to fit the instrument perfectly in his hands. And he presents it all with an irresistible intelligence, charm, and gentle humor. Openers Mark Mandeville & Raianne Richards are a folk duo from Massachusetts. Although most of their material is original, their songs resonate with the tradition of Americana and old country music. Their performance is solid and spirited, backing up their strong harmonies with guitar, banjo, ukulele, bass, and occasionally clarinet. Fri., 3/8: Pat Donohue, Jef & Michele Yay! Pat Donohue is back after six years. Pat s regular job is that of the guitarist for the Guys Shoe Band (the house band for A Prairie Home Companion). But he really shines when let out on his own. An outstanding guitarist in all genres, he specializes in fingerstyle blues and ragtime. He is also a great songwriter with a wonderful sense of humor. He has written some of the best parodies this side of Weird Al Yankovich or Allan Sherman. Openers Jef Fiorini & Michele Merrihew are a pair of Folk Project members who have become a big hit at our monthly music parties. And they deserve a wider audience. They are lovers of the acoustic Americana music of the past 50 years, from Bonnie Raitt to the Dixie Chicks. They put together spirited arrangements with great harmonies and tasty guitar work from Jef. Fri., 3/15: Open Stage (not the usual 2nd Friday) This is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. We ve often seen previews of our regular scheduled acts for the first time at Open Stage. Fri., 3/22: Silk City, Just Left Town Silk City is the high powered combination of three of the most accomplished musicians in the East. Danny Weiss blazing guitar and soaring tenor voice have led bluegrass-oriented bands from Bottle Hill to Skyline. Barry Mitterhoff is currently also playing his mandolin when on tour with Hot Tuna. And Larry Cohen s bass playing is sought after by musicians and recording studios around the country. Opening act Just Left Town plays a lively mix of roots music, weaving together classic country, bopping blues, bluegrass, and jazz standards. The band features tight harmonies and tasty instrumental arrangements from Folk Project member Frank Sole (bass, guitar and fiddle), Don Friedman (guitar and banjo), and Jenny Glenn (guitar and mandolin). Fri., 3/29: Split Bill Carolann Solebello and Martin Swinger Stepping out on her own after three years as part of Red Molly, Carolann Solebello brings her exquisite voice and songwriting and song collecting skills to the Minstrel stage. Since launching her solo career, she has grown as a writer, and as a presence on stage. Martin Swinger connects with his audience. And particularly in live concert. He is an astounding musician with a comfortable presence, a powerful voice and creative guitar skills. His vocal skills especially shine in innovative scat and other improvisational singing. He also plays swing, gypsy jazz and tunes from the contra dance repertoire. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $8.00 on your way in and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. There is quite a large area for sleeping bags, and many spaces (Patty has some mattresses) inside the Silos and local motels and B&B s for the less adventurous. Plenty of free parking and country air with bright stars at night. What sets this weekend apart, for me, is 1) the musicianship and camaraderie of the people who come to play; and 2) the fact that we generally only request $10/day donation along with a gourmet food contribution for the delicious meals. BROTHER SUN is absolutely the hottest act on the folk concert scene. This trio is Joe Jencks, Greg Greenway and Pat Wictor, and each individual is a worthy headliner for our weekend of musical wonder. CLIFF EBERHARDT is a national treasure, a songwriter, singer, guitarist headliner and a moving force on the national folk scene for decades. Fun facts: He s renowned for his work with Richie Havens and Melanie, and as the voice in Chevy s Heartbeat of American campaign. JACOB JOHNSON is a young rising star, with his own ecstatic brand of Neoacoustic Folk/ Funk. He earned a standing ovation at the Minstrel, and he ll do it again come festival. Mike & Ruthie are Ruthie Ungar and Mike Merenda. This loving couple was two-thirds of the infamous Mammals contra band, and their arsenal of instruments and talent is beyond devastatingly impressive. Their vocals are equally overpowering in traditional and contemporary styles too numerous to list. And Jay s MC praise was short in one respect: There s more very big performer news to come! Bob Isaacs with be calling Advanced Contras and Grid Squares for two hours in the afternoon from 4pm until 6pm. The regular Evening Dance will run from 8pm to 11pm with a Beginners Workshop at 7:30pm. The hall will be open during the dinner break for those that want to bring their own food. 7 Folk Project Board Meeting February 2013 Board Meeting: The Summary The February Meeting of the Folk Project Board was called to order on Feb. 5 at 8:07pm at the home of Grover Kemble in Morris Plains. Present were: Lindsey Meyer, Lois DeRitter, Joanne Cronin, Barrett Wilson, Jim Gartner, Grover Kemble (trustees), Gloria Friedman, Mike Agranoff, Rachel Streich, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Bill Henderson, Pam Robinson, Sandie Reilly, Lori Falco, Allan Kugel, Mark Schaffer, Jean Scully, Pat Brangs, Joe Graziano. Absent were: Eddie Roffman, Leigh Walker, Scooter Ferguson, Nancy Kelner, and Mike DelVecchio. Minutes to the January 8, 2013 meeting were circulated via to the Board as Secretary Rachel had some technical difficulties uploading them to the Wiki. Mike A. suggested adding synopses of committee meeting reports to the minutes. Acceptance of minutes was tabled till next month as several Board members could not read them in Word format. Treasurer Bill assured us that the Folk Project was in fine shape, financially. There was no New Business. In Old Business, Board meeting dates and locations were amended as follows: the 6/4/13 meeting will be at Mark & Robin s, not Lindsey s; the 7/2/13 meeting will be at the Roffmans, not Mark & Robin s; the 8/6/13 meeting will be at Joe Graziano s, not Lindsey s; the 10/1/13 meeting will be at Allan & Cecilia s, and the 11/5/13 meeting will be at Pam & Bob s. Regarding creation of updated job descriptions for Board positions, Elizabeth suggested having them done by the June meeting. In the Committee reports, we heard from Festival chair Mark Schaffer that they are still booking performers for Spring 2013, including Eric and Annie, FP members who wowed us 2 festivals ago. There may be a return of the Skit for the Fall Festival! Special Concerts: There will be a house concert at the Schafferosa on Sunday 4/21/13 with Raina Rose. Scooter has a couple of other ideas in the works as well. Swingin Tern: There were 2 more profitable dances, on 1/19 and 2/2. The dances have been getting many newcomers 15 at the last dance, including a number of college students. On 4/6/13, they will be doing a double dance with Perpetual e-motion: an advanced dance for experienced dancers only, from 4 6 pm, followed by their normal dance for everyone from 8-11 pm with a higher admission ($15 vs $10 normal price). Community Services: Joe is again organizing Wayne Day, for Sunday 6/9/13. He has 2 or 3 Folk Project performers already booked, and will be setting up a FP booth to publicize us and hand out literature. He s looking for volunteers to staff the booth. Membership: Renewal reminders went out to all whose membership expired in the past 18 months. Renewals are coming in but its too early to report on them. HSNOI: Taped 2 shows, one with Dan Pelletier, and one with a klezmer band called Litvakus, whom Sandie thought were wonderful and not-to-be-missed. Internal Affairs: Jean reports that she currently has no host/venue for the 2nd Saturday Evening of Music in March. Please contact her if you can host!! The meeting was adjourned at 9:52 pm. He is in great health, still lives home and cares for himself. He s an amazing guy! Also, my daughter Cristina and her fiancé move into their new home in Wayne on Sunday, the 17th. Eddie Roffman just returned from a Jewish Mission to Cuba, visiting, learning and sharing with the Jewish community. Eddie says, We went to Havana and a few smaller towns in the interior. There was good music everywhere: in the streets, hotels, bars and the synagogues too. Things are different in Cuba. There s no advertisements for products or services, only for the government and their revolution. Billboards with pictures of Che Guevera and political slogans are everywhere. The people are warm and friendly. Barrett Wilson enjoying playing his current Hammered Dulcimer, and is looking forward to the deliv of his new Hammered Dulcimer sometime in early March. So much music - so little time... Liz Pagan has been trying for the past year-plus to donate a kidney, and after many twists and turns, it may actually happen soon. She says it s no big deal, it involves less risk than daily driving to work in New Jersey, and she hopes her experience will spur other healthy people to consider being a living donor.
