1 A summer of magic. A lifetime of music. Summer music program for ages 14 20
2 Experience excellence! The Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) is recognized internationally as the premier summer training program for aspiring young musicians and the only program of its kind associated with one of the world s great symphony orchestras. Under the guidance of distinguished professionals, and in the presence of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), young people devote themselves to an artistic experience without parallel. High artistic standards, a rich culture of learning, and diverse programs make BUTI a unique opportunity for young artists the starting point on a path to a future in classical music. From the moment students step onto the grounds, they are immersed in music. No one who spends a summer at Tanglewood leaves untouched by the experience. Young Artists Orchestra performance of Mahler s Symphony no. 6 in Ozawa Hall By the Numbers max # of college credits for attendance 8 # of BUTI alums in the BSO 14 avg. # of students enrolled 350 # of BUTI student recitals and concerts given every summer 40 # of BSO/TMC concerts students can attend 63
3 Created in 1966 at the invitation of then-boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) conductor Erich Leinsdorf, BUTI developed as a counterpart to the BSO s Tanglewood Music Center (TMC). Leinsdorf envisioned a program to challenge young musicians to perform at the highest level and allow them unprecedented access to the Tanglewood Music Festival. BUTI students share rehearsal and performance spaces with BSO members, and also attend a selection of TMC master classes and activities many led by BSO members. BUTI students enjoy free, unlimited access to all performances of the BSO and TMC throughout the summer. This interaction with the BSO and TMC distinguishes BUTI from other summer music programs and offers aspiring young artists a superior, inspiring, and transforming musical experience. Young Artists Programs Whether contemplating a career as a professional musician or developing skills for the sheer pleasure of making music, BUTI Young Artists Programs offer gifted young musicians the experience of a lifetime. Students are exposed to professional standards of training typical of college conservatory programs. The Young Artists Programs are designed to focus on the components relevant to their respective areas of study: large ensemble; chamber music rehearsals and performances; master classes; and private lessons. Several programs include such courses as music theory, music history, diction, and movement. Young Artists Programs Orchestra 6 weeks Voice 6 weeks Wind Ensemble 4 weeks Piano 3 or 6 weeks Composition 6 weeks Harp 6 weeks Under the guidance of conductors, distinguished artist-teachers, and BSO members, students receive superior music training. In an inspiring and supportive environment, students are encouraged to grow musically and thrive socially to be the complete Citizen Artist. Additionally, students often have access to guest artists appearing with the BSO. Recent guest artists include: Leonard Bernstein, conductor and composer Brenda The eagerness and joy with which the orchestra absorbed every musical moment gave me great gratification and hope for American youth. Emanuel Ax Joshua Bell Christine Brewer Stephanie Blythe David Del Tredici Kirill Gerstein Hilary Hahn John Harbison Lynn Harrell Midori Nico Muhly Daniel Müller-Schott Christian Tetzlaff Pinchas Zukerman Joshua Bell Emanuel Ax It is impossible for me to become disillusioned with singing because I carry in my heart a knowledge of music s tremendous importance, power, and joy; this is the great gift of BUTI. Patterson, mezzo-soprano (BUTI 94 95)
4 Two-Week Workshops To be the best, you must study with the best! The workshops offer an exceptional opportunity for young musicians to work with the finest artists and pedagogues in the country. The limited enrollment and nurturing environment allow students to focus on the technique and performance practice of each instrument: audition preparation, orchestral excerpts, solo repertoire, and étude/technical studies. Two-Week Workshops are directed by distinguished BU School of Music artist-teachers: Flute Linda Toote Oboe John Ferrillo and Robert Sheena Clarinet Ethan Sloane Bassoon Suzanne Nelsen Saxophone Kenneth Radnofsky Horn Eric Ruske Trumpet Terry Everson Trombone Don Lucas Tuba/Euphonium Mike Roylance Percussion Timothy Genis Double Bass Todd Seeber String Quartet Peter Zazofsky BUTI Student Life A summer at BUTI provides students the chance to develop academically, socially, and artistically. The Student Life staff is enthusiastically committed to fully supporting BUTI students in their personal and professional pursuits. Students meet new friends and enjoy activities on and off campus. The BUTI community is enriched by each student s individual style, thirst for knowledge, and love of music. BUTI is proud to be part of the richness of the historical, cultural, and artistic diversity of the Berkshires and encourages each student to experience as much of this remarkable environment as possible. Student Life activities include: Yoga for Musicians Hiking the Berkshires Attending the Jacob s Pillow Dance Festival Visits to area art museums Seeing Shakespeare & Co. performances Games and competitions with students and staff Trips to local shopping malls and outlets Social opportunities on and off campus For full faculty biographies, visit tanglewood/employees/faculty. This is the highest-quality summer opportunity for pre-college musicians. The proximity of the festival offers great opportunities to experience a variety of musical events. This program is culturally indispensable! John Harbison, American composer BUTI is a unique experience that made me realize what playing at a high level was all about... and served as the launching point of my professional career. Owen Young, cellist, BSO (BUTI 79 80) I think music is a universal language that can unite people from different cultures. I chose BUTI not only to improve my playing but to have a multicultural experience. Giulia Contaldo, piano student, Florence, Italy (BUTI 11)
