1 MODULE SPECIFICATION UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES KEY FACTS Module name Module code School Department or equivalent INDONESIAN MUSIC STUDIES MU2107 School of Arts and Social Sciences Department of Music, Culture and Creative Industries UK credits 15 ECTS 7.5 Level HE5 Delivery location (partnership programmes only) MODULE SUMMARY Module outline and aims This elective module is intended to provide a practical and theoretical understanding of a wide variety of Balinese and Javanese gamelan music and its repertoires. The module aims to introduce the diversity of musical styles and genres that exist in Indonesia and to show the links between music and religion, and music and theatrical forms. The series will investigate concepts of ''classical'', ''folk'' and ''popular'' in Indonesian, and will explore the manner in which colonialism and commerce has affected the music traditions. NB : those of you who wish to take this module are required to participate in the Javanese gamelan (Part 1/2) or Balinese gamelan ({Part 2) performance classes (Ensemble Performance), held in the Autumn and Spring terms. To develop a broad understanding of, and an aural familiarity with a variety of Indonesian musical genres To establish the musical principles of mode, melody, metre, rhythm and structure To show the links between music and religion and music and theatrical forms

3 WHAT WILL I BE EXPECTED TO ACHIEVE? On successful completion of this module, you will be expected to be able to: Knowledge and understanding: Demonstrate an aural familiarity with a variety of traditional musical forms from Java and Bali Understand the principal musical components of the traditions studied Appreciate the relationships between music, religion, and other performing and fine arts Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the history, chronology and the geography of musical developments in the traditions studied. Skills: Apply analytical listening skills to determine and articulate the form, structure and historical location of a variety of the idioms studied. Analyse and, where appropriate, transcribe melodic and rhythmic characteristics of the musical idioms studied. Compose for a chosen Javanese gamelan using an Indonesian cipher notation. Demonstrate the acquisition and application of appropriate research skills. Values and attitudes: Respect and acknowledge the ideas and work of others Show respect for the musical practices of, and musical and social values held by the cultures studied. HOW WILL I LEARN? Assessment Criteria and Grade-Related Criteria for module assessments will be made available to students prior to an assessment taking place. More information will be available from the module leader. Feedback on assessment Following an assessment, students will be given their marks and feedback in line with the Assessment Regulations and Policy. More information on the timing and type of feedback that will be provided for each
5 assessment will be available from the module leader. Assessment Regulations The Pass mark for the module is 40%. Any minimum qualifying marks for specific assessments are listed in the table above.
