It starts with a mindset: and the liberal arts are a powerful combination. World-class musicians should also be world-class thinkers. Classically trained musicians can be cutting-edge musicians. Passion and profession can coexist. ians should be smart, agile, innovative, collaborative and entrepreneurial inside and outside the world of music. The 21st century needs 21st-century musicians.
21st-Century ianship Conservatory Education for a Changing, Challenging World Creative Impulse We integrate improvisation, composition and deep listening throughout our conservatory curriculum to help you to be the most creative, flexible, collaborative and adaptable musician you can be. Core ianship Our studio teachers, musicologists, and theory and composition professors will help you develop outstanding technique, flawless tone and beautiful musicality while providing a firm grounding in music theory, composition and history. This exceptional musical training is the central link to all our essential values in the conservatory. Multi-ality Expand your musical vocabulary with a full array of Western classical music opportunities as well as world music ensembles: Balinese gamelan, Ghanaian Ewe drumming and dancing, Cuban drumming and singing, Brazilian Samba drumming and Australian Aborginal Didjeridu. When you dive into an ensemble tradition with no written music, you will find new opportunities to create in the spaces between musical traditions. Liberal Arts Education To reach your full musical potential, you must also expand intellectually and the liberal arts tradition at Lawrence nurtures the creative, multidisciplinary, flexible mindset you ll need to succeed here and in your life after Lawrence. Social Engagement We will challenge you to ask (and answer) questions like: What if bands, choirs, and orchestras were places not only for joyous highlevel music making, but also for communities to develop leadership, collaboration, improvisation and entrepreneurship? What can live music do for people in warming shelters, hospitals, or prisons? Entrepreneurial Mindset To own your musical life and stand out from the crowd you will need to be innovative, passionate, original, collaborative and fearless and we ll help you hone this mindset through that incorporates improvisational exercises and creative play, along with the creation of high-level business proposals. Performance Reimagined If we want audiences to re-engage with classical music or any live music we have to redefine the rules and be willing to step outside the confines of tradition. The Lawrence Conservatory s innovative culture is to rethink every aspect of performance from venue to presentation to create the most compelling live performances that we can.
3 MUSIC DEGREE OPTIONS AREAS OF MUSIC STUDY BACHELOR OF MUSIC (B.Mus.) Primary focus on music within a liberal arts context. Major in performance, music education, composition or theory. CURRICULUM DISTRIBUTION College MUSIC MAJORS Performance Education (Choral, General, Instrumental) Theory Composition (B.A. major) DOUBLE DEGREE (B.A./B.Mus.) Immerse yourself in music and at least one other field, at a very high level in both, through this five-year program. AREAS OF EMPHASIS Must be added to a music major Jazz & Improvisational Collaborative Piano CURRICULUM DISTRIBUTION College MUSIC MINORS Pedagogy BACHELOR OF ARTS IN MUSIC (B.A.) Allows a broader liberal arts focus. Extensively explore non-musical interests while receiving advanced musical training. CONSERVATORY STUDIOS Bassoon Harpsichord Trombone CURRICULUM DISTRIBUTION Cello Horn Trumpet College Clarinet Contrabass Oboe Organ Tuba Viola Euphonium Piano Violin Flute Percussion Voice Note: Students outside the Conservatory may still participate in ensembles, receive private instruction with professors and participate in classes specifically designed for non-music majors. Guitar Saxophone
Ensembles Symphony Orchestra Wind Ensemble Symphonic Band Viking Chorale Cantala Concert Choir Baroque Ensemble Jazz Ensemble Jazz Band Jazz Combos Improvisation Group Percussion Ensemble Sambistas Kinkaviwo Tambo Toké Gamelan Opera al Theatre Harmonia Appletones Conchordance ViBE (Viking Bassoon Ensemble) Clarinet Choir Cello Ensemble Brass Choir Horn Ensemble LOVE (Lawrence s Own Viola Ensemble) And many more... Non-music majors are an integral part of all the ensembles at Lawrence and can also benefit from the world-class training we offer. Almost every ensemble is open to any student by audition, and a few ensembles require no music training at all to join, like the Balinese gamelan. Non-Con students can also audition for Ensemble Awards, which waive private lesson fees in exchange for ensemble participation.
Annie Mercado 18 Vocal Performance Everyone has a different idea of what their musical life after Lawrence will be. The Lawrence faculty are so invested in the different dreams and goals we all have. The smaller community makes the perfect space for professors to really find out as much as they can about their students and students about their professors this helps so much in whatever practice you may need. What I love most about my voice professor is that he pushes me to perform honestly and generously for my audience and for myself. Jonathan Ibach 20 Education and Horn Performance I chose my major because of my love for playing the horn and my passion for wanting to teach music to the next generation. The Lawrence education is preparing me to face any challenge and come up with creative and bold solutions. With a strong base in understanding the foundations of tonal music, I feel that I will be well-equipped to embrace, work on and enjoy all music. The professors are great because of their willingness to listen to you and because of the ways in which they push the student to reach their goals and beyond. Adam Korber 17 Education and Cello Performance With my music education degree, I have learned how to teach effectively and how to teach more than music. With my performance degree, I have learned what it takes to be competitive in the market as a musician. I have also learned skills that go beyond the concert hall and practice room such as website building, management and how to develop my passions into practical ideas! Overall, Lawrence does a great job of giving you an excellent foundation on your instrument. That foundation, paired with a class that Dean Pertl offers, has prepared me for using music to make a living with my instrument. Kate Kilgus 18 Clarinet Performance and Mathematics I knew that I liked playing my instrument but was also excited to learn more about other aspects of music like theory and musicology. That being said, I had a lot of interests and never saw myself just doing music, so Lawrence and the dual degree program were perfect for me. I look up to many of my professors not only because of their musical and academic talents but also in the way they approach teaching and learning. Professors in the Con hold their students to a high standard but are still approachable and foster a healthy, noncompetitive atmosphere that I think is ideal for developing as a student and musician.
