Box 4442 Modesto, CA (209) SUNDAY, AUGUST 17, p.m. TO 5:00 p.m. at The CLARION INN ON SISK RD In MODESTO This month s guest is An ensemble like no other, HOT CITY has established an aesthetic of New Orleans style hot jazz and classic swing which they augment with a vast array of exotic musical elements, from Latin and Caribbean rhythms to Pacific Island themes and Middle Eastern melodies, forming an intoxicating aural palette that has been referred to as SWINGXOTICA. Returning to his California home after two years of recording and touring throughout the United States and Europe (Jim Cullum Jazz Band, Wayne The Train Hancock ), bassist and vocalist Zack Sapunor did so with the notion of creating new ensemble that was steeped in the classic hot jazz sound. HOT CITY truly is that band. 2 2 Musically Speaking President s Message For some of us, Back to School is a thing of the past, but we are all Lifetime Learners. How about learning to play an instrument! This month s issue of Modesto View has a great article on public school music. Whether you are a musician, a dancer, or a listener, get in the swing of things at the Modesto Traditional Jazz Society meeting on the third Sunday every month at the Clarion in Modesto!! Hopefully the temperature will stay below triple digits! Last month we had a great guest band, Fulton Street Jazz Band, a cool venue and a large dance floor, but unfortunately the dance floor was not very crowded. And now it s time for you all to find your way back to the Clarion for the Jazz Society s August meeting. I am hoping that our attendance picks up this month. We miss seeing many of our friends the past two months! July Raffle Two Happy Winners The winner of the Special Raffle in July Two Tickets to Beach Blanket Babylon in San Francisco was Jon Corbin. Beach Blanket Babylon is the world's longest running musical revue. Packed with hilarious spoofs of pop culture, political characters, spectacular costumes, outrageously gigantic hats and one show-stopping number after another. The tickets were donated by CK and Roberta Gottschalk. We hope Jon and his wife have a great time at the show. The winner of July s most popular regular raffle prize a solar yard ornament was Don Rees. A special thanks goes to Becky Sharp for all her help with the July raffle. Every month our big money maker is our raffle. As always, tickets for raffle prizes will be 6 for $5. This money mainly pays for our guest bands, this newsletter, and youth activities. Guest Band for July The guest band for July meeting will be the Hot City. Most of the members of this group have played here in Modesto before, but this is the first time for the band. Hot City claims a vast array of elements and promise many different sounds. Whatever they do, is done with a passion and zest for their respective instruments. Their performance should be great fun for dancers and listeners alike. Things to Remember Everyone can keep posted with our club activities, as always, on facebook and at our website, modestodixieland.com. If you haven t already been there, be sure to check us out and like us! If you have any positive contributions or suggestions about either, please let us know. Remember the Club meeting will be Sunday, August 17 th, with the first jam set beginning at 12:00 Noon. We had some outstanding jammers last month. We always welcome new jammers. Please enjoy the good friendships and entertainment, but also enjoy the food and drink service that the Clarion offers, as that is our only way of showing them our appreciation for the use of their facility. Please remember to thank your waitress for all her hard work. Bring a new friend to the meeting and encourage them to join our Jazz Society! Put on your dancin shoes and come on down. No matter which way one s individual tastes may lie, anyone who witnesses a HOT CITY performance will experience the undeniable pleasure of hearing musicians who have dedicated their lives to mining this rich musical tradition with not only competence and expression, but with pure joy and enthusiasm. Sorry I haven t been at the Clarion since I was made Music Director again, but since my transplant, I have been trying to do things and go places that I hadn t been able to do for over a year. It feels good to be able to travel and attend music and personal events again. I hope some of you are able to attend the Creole Jazz Kings CD Release Party on Wednesday August 20 th, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Clarion Inn. The CD s will be available for a one time only special price that night. I hope to see all of you on the 17 th at the monthly session of the Modesto Traditional Jazz Society. A Note From The Editor When I am asked by people where to see and hear groups play in the Modesto area, one of the first places I tell them about is the Clarion. We have our club meetings there on the third Sunday of the month and also, seemingly unknown to a lot of people including most of the membership of the MTJS, is that the Creole Jazz Kings play every Wednesday at the Clarion in the bar from 6-9pm.
