1 Volume 43, Number 4 April 2018 JACOB ZIMMERMAN S PALS SHARE THE STAGE WITH A GARFIELD H.S. QUINTET ON APRIL 15TH! by George Swinford For the first time in some years we have two bands scheduled for our next concert. In his Notes From The Prez last month John Heinz explained why this is happening. In short, we are hoping to stimulate an appreciation, among young musicians, for the older forms of jazz. We d like them to join us and carry on the work of keeping those old sounds alive and vital. Our featured band, Jacob Zimmerman s Pals, is a select group of musicians, led by a man who is himself an instructor of young musicians at Garfield. Jacob and his Pals will play our first set on the 15th. A quintet of young musicians from the storied jazz program at Garfield High will take the stage for set number two. The plan for the final set is to present a varying mixture of players from both bands. Pictured left Panel to Right: Zach Burpee - trumpet Will Jammes - bass Evan DeTurk - alto-sax WHERE: Ballard Elks Lodge 6411 Seaview Ave. NW, Seattle WHEN: 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m April 15 Jacob Zimmerman, introduced in last month s Jazz Soundings, will lead his Pals, playing saxes and clarinet. 3 Page 3 INTRODUCING ALEX GUILBERT by Alex Guilbert This year will mark Alex Guilbert s first PSTJS appearance as a leader, when he brings his Stampede Seven to our May meeting. He s really no stranger to our stage, having appeared as a sideman eight times since Here, he becomes the subject of the second in our series of introductions to jazz band leaders. Alex Guilbert has been playing jazz music professionally in Seattle since the early nineties, while he was attending the University of Washington earning his music degree. His first exposure to the sweet sounds of traditional jazz came during his tenure with the fabled Big Bang Band. This was an oddball group of musicians who had a secret stash of stock arrangements from the twenties and thirties. Although this group played regularly, and Alex spent countless hours listening to Louis and Bix, it was only much later that he came to consider himself a real trad musician. In 2004 he had the good fortune to join holotradband, a septet led by Dave Holo and his hot cornet. They had a lengthy tenure of Tuesday nights at the New Orleans Creole Restaurant, in Pioneer Square. For a few of those years Alex also occupied the piano chair with the New Orleans Quintet, on Monday nights. It was during this time that Alex really became acquainted with traditional jazz and many of its purveyors in the Seattle area. When the New Orleans closed in 2015 Alex found himself playing less trad, and he felt worse off as a result. Last year he decided to do something about it. He wrote some arrangements and assembled some of the finest musicians he knows, forming his Stampede Seven. This ensemble is devoted to serving the trad and dance communities by providing hot Dixieland and the sounds of early swing. Alex s influences as a pianist are wide ranging. As a musical omnivore, he s internalized lessons from such pianists as James P. Johnson and Teddy Wilson, on through to Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett. He considers himself a perennial student. He still studies Bach and Brahms, as well as the jazz masters. In 2015 he began curating Piano Starts Here at the Royal Room. This series brings Seattle s finest pianists together for intimate concerts, each one focusing on a theme. These tribute concerts have focused on a wide range of artists: Earl Hines and Mary Lou Williams, Thelonius Monk and James P. Johnson, on to Geri Allen and Muhal Richard Abrams and beyond. This series not only lets Alex help to build community among pianists, it also provides an opportunity to learn something new with each performance. By day Alex makes his living as a composer and sound designer for video games. He lives in Wedgwood with his wife, son, and a very highstrung dog.

4 Page 4 NOTES FROM THE PREZ. Spring is in the air and we are celebrating with the first of what we hope will be an ongoing collaboration with local high school music programs to encourage potential jazz professionals of the future to learn about traditional jazz and keep America s music alive for the ages. You are encouraged to be here with them on this special occasion. And, another important note. The Lacey traditional jazz festival may be on the road to recovery, in a new venue. It is called, A Jazz & Dance Party, scheduled for June 29th through July 1st, The complete details are available at the this website, / j a z z - p a r t i e s / l a c e y - o l y m p i a - washington/. If you wish to attend, there are only 300 reservations available, and many are already filled, so time is of the essence. Faithfully, John Seattle High School Student Musicians by John Heinz From the late 1920 s to the present, Seattle has produced many great jazz and swing bands, including all of the traditional jazz bands listed in Jazz Soundings. That is a great legacy for our community that is continuing, in large part, due to the many high schools in our area that have exceptionally good music teaching programs. Beyond that, the greater Seattle area high schools also have a powerful national jazz band history. I am referring to the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival held in Lincoln Center every year. Seattle bands have been well represented there. Only fifteen bands from the 50 states are selected each year and we have had two or three (20%) selected each year to compete, placing high most of the time, and one year placing first and second. I encourage you to enter the first several words, from the italics above, into your Internet search box, go to the Wikipedia site, and scan down to the Competing Bands section where all of the states, and their schools, are listed. Two of our greater Seattle area schools have a long history there, and many others have competed there also. Garfield High School 1999 (H.M.), 2000 (H.M.), 2002 (2nd), 2003 (1st), 2004 (1st), 2005, 2006 (3rd), 2007, 2008 (2nd), 2009 (1st), 2010 (1st), 2013, 2014 (H.M.), 2015, 2016 Roosevelt High School 1999, 2000 (3rd), 2001 (2nd), 2002 (1st), 2004, 2005 (2nd), 2006, 2007 (1st), 2008 (1st), 2009 (2nd), 2010 (H.M.), 2011 (2nd), 2012 (2nd), 2013 (3rd), 2014, 2015, 2016 Jacob and Garfield cont. from page 1 These four were part of the group of Jacob s Pals which we heard in February New to us this year will be D Vonne Lewis on drums and Christian Pincock on trombone. D Vonne Lewis is a grandson of Dave Lewis, a local legend on Hammond organ. He is a graduate of Roosevelt High School. In three of his high school years he was named Outstanding Drum Soloist at the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival at Lincoln Center. He has been a local first call drummer ever since then. Trombonist Christian Pincock is a graduate of the New England Conservatory Of Music (as is Jacob Zimmerman). He also holds a Master s Degree in Jazz Studies. He plays concerts and leads educational workshops across the US. He has taught extensively and has played with an impressive number of well known artists. The quintet from Garfield which we ll hear in the second set consists of the following young musicians: Zach Burpee, trumpet, Evan DeTurk, alto sax, Leo Winieki, piano, Will Jamess, bass and Amrin Magenss on drums. All new to us, of course, but well recommended. Having been a high school and college bandsman myself, decades ago, I am awed by the technical skills and musical imagination of players from the elite high school jazz programs of today. I believe the PSTJS listeners and dancers will be similarly impressed. Please join us on April 15th to hear and applaud Jacob Zimmerman s Pals and the quintet of young players from Garfield. Let s welcome these Garfield youngsters and their friends and encourage them to return again.
