ASPIRING MUSICIANS PROGRAM (AMP) Pre-Aspiring Musicians Program classes are designed for children ages 7-9 as preparation for the AMP Program. These classes include all types of active music making and learning, including singing, moving, listening, improvisation, and performing on percussion and tonebar instruments. In addition, young people begin to use solfege and learn to read and write music notation. The Aspiring Musicians Program classes for ages 9-17 provide one hour group lessons for flute, clarinet, trumpet/cornet, oboe, saxophone, French horn, trombone/baritone/tuba (low brass instruments), percussion, piano, strings (violin, viola, cello) and guitar. MULTI-GENERATIONAL CLASSES (children & adults) course description GOSPEL CHOIR The Community Music School-Detroit Gospel Choir is a diverse group of individuals who love Gospel music, from ages 13 through adults! We are focused on showering the communities of Detroit and beyond with the inspirational, soulful and uplifting sounds of Gospel music. We sing various genres and styles, ranging from contemporary Gospel and Christian music to Negro spirituals, hymns, and anthems. Our main goal is to be "a light within our city" providing excellent music with brightness and enthusiasm. Bring your voice and a smile. A small audition of any Gospel/Christian song is required for vocal section placement as well as a simple "testing of the ear," which includes clapping/singing a melody or rhythm back that is played, sang or clapped to you. Some choreography (clapping and rocking simultaneously) may be required. Let's sing the lyrics that uplift our spirits! MUSIC THERAPY Music therapists provide treatment for a variety of conditions ranging from stress to severe handicaps. Services are offered to individuals of all ages and abilities. Services are offered in individual or group settings, as appropriate for the client s needs and ability. Through music programming at CMS-D, individuals with special needs have found joy, new friendships, and have made progress in the acquisition of motor, verbal, communication, and social skills through music. Musical talent or training are not prerequisites for acceptance into the music therapy program. Experiences are geared to the specific functioning levels, interests, and clinical needs of the persons enrolled in the therapy. Treatment is provided by professional therapists who have training, experience, and certification in the field of music therapy. For more information about music therapy, please contact Jody Conradi Stark at starkjo2@msu.edu. 6
