1 NEWSLETTER April 2009 New Season, New Name Srping is in the air. And now that we ve officially changed the name of our weekly music series from the Minstrel Coffeehouse to the Minstrel to avoid confusion between our listening room and the myriads of latte-sipping rooms we re following suit with the name of our organization. From now on, the Folk Project will be known as The F. This is being done for several reasons. First, it will avoid confusion for people who are trying to find us. No longer will music-seekers be confused by the many other types of folk old folks, folk remedies, or generic folk of any country or culture. At the same time, they won t be led astray by the infinite variety of Projects to be found: the Human Genome Project, the Manhattan Project, and projectile vomitting, to name only a few. Second, people using web search engines will come up with many more hits. Instead of typing 11 letters, they need only type one, F, and they should be instantly directed to our organiation. The F Board of Directors expects that this will help bolster attendance and increase our nationwide visibility. See you at the Minstrel! Stresstival 09 is back! Stresstival 09 promises to even surpass last year s inaugural event. This year s celebration of all things nerve-wracking and annoyingly tedious will be at a new location, Our Lady of Perpetual Ennui s recreation hall at 999 Normal St., Tenseneck, NJ. Featured workshops include: Yeah, I m out of tune, SO WHAT?, Making lists you ll never get to, and Screeching babies, cats in heat, and monkeys with their heads on fire: a jam session. Our list of performers cannot be announced at this time because they refure to take our calls and we re so frigging tired of leaving messages on their voice mail and why don t they sign the goshdurned contract already, it beats me. So we re already in full stress mode for this year s fest, you see. Tickets are going fast, we wish, but we better sell a few before the event or we ll lose our shirt and then before you know it our committee will be dissolved and we ll be back to baking cookies for the Minstrel. Not that that s a bad thing. So join us on April 1. Tickets are priced very low, well not too low that would make you think it s not worth it, so let s call it reasonable. Call Yank Machaine at for details. April Evening o Music Sat., 4/11, 8pm Liz & Dave s Cruisic! We ve got a very special evening o music this month. Join Your Humble Newsleditor and herdave Kleiner on a fabulous Caribbean cruise. The Celebrity Solstice departs Sun., April 5 from Fort Lauderdale at 4pm. There ll be food, music and good cheer culminating in the Saturday Night Evening o Music and Pool Party in the Solarium. As an extra added bonus, we ll join Dave s Dad Rabbi Sid as he presides over the pesach feast. Call your travel agent, or book directly through Don t forget your sunscreen!

2 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series 4/10: Open Stage presented by 4/3: The Wiyos and The Fabulous Furry Harmonica Brothers Rooted in American musical traditions of the early 20th Century, THE WIYOS take a new generation of listeners back to a time before genre distinctions separated blues and country, ragtime and gospel, swing and hillbilly music. With great musical skill and an enormous dose of stage charisma, Michael Farkas, (vocals, harmonica, washboard, and kazoo), Parrish Ellis (guitar & vocals), and JoeBass DeJarnette (dog-house bass, vocals) bring this old music back to life, and present some originals that sound as if they came from the era. It is with great joy we present our opening act. Longtime Folk Project member Ralph Litwin, in recovery from Parkinson s Disease is once again able to take the stage, along with his buddy Al Podbur in the guise of the FABULOUS FURRY HARMONICA BROTHERS. With banjo, guitar, bouzouki, and, of course harmonica, they cover a wide range of musical styles including ragtime, blues, jugband, Dixieland, western swing, old-timey, country, rock n' roll oldies, calypso, 12-string playing in the style of Leadbelly, fiddle tunes, and more. The Minstrel provides this service to our local musical community and passing traveling professionals to be heard by the public and maybe to be booked for a future show. Those who wish to perform at the OPEN STAGE should visit Those who wish to see and hear a wide variety of performers should attend. 4/17: CLOSED for the Folk Project Spring Festival In our brand new spiffy Bloomingdale, NJ location, the Folk Project resumes its history of intimate folk festivals featuring concerts, workshops, dancing, and lots of home-made music. The lineup features Small Potatoes, Harvey Reid, The Dave Rowe Trio and includes many more. Attendance by preregistration only. Visit or call for further information. 4/24: The Creaking Tree String Quartet and Betsy Rose and the Chicago Fire Those of you who liked The Jeremy Kittel Band in February, or the fabulous Nickel Creek, would probably enjoy the Torontobased CREAKING TREE STRING QUARTET. Their music might be described as chamber bluegrass. Starting with the traditional fiddle-guitar-mandolin-bass combination, they leap stylistic boundaries and fuse intricate styles. The result is a smartly intellectual and yet deeply moving sound that's a true Canadian original: jazz forms sliding over a rootsy bluegrass base, with flashes of chamber music, reverence and avant-garde experimentation all permeated with absolutely brilliant musicianship. Opener BETSY ROSE a.k.a. Elizabeth Lachowicz is the Folk Project's resident Blues maven. Her clear voice and saucy style are rooted in the sights and sounds of Chicago's toughest neighborhoods and rowdiest music bars. Betsy's brand of the blues is filled with life lessons, raw emotions, heartfelt sorrows and playful innuendos. Her backup band is THE CHICAGO FIRE, and it's packed with some of the Project's finest musicians. UPCOMING: 5/1: Songwriter AMY SPEACE; 5/8: JOEL MABUS Multi-instrumental virtuoso & songwriter; 5/22: FRANK & HANK Jazz guitar duo; 6/5: Powerful singer-songwriter JOHN FLYNN; 6/19: THE FOLK BROTHERS David Massengill & Jack Hardy; 7/3: Guitarist, wordsmith, funny man, and the Minstrel s Program Chairman, MIKE AGRANOFFJ; 7/24: The Minstrel s BIRTHDAY SHOW; 7/31: Blues guitarist extraordinaire TOBY WALKER The Minstrel is an acoustic music concert series run by the Folk Project, a non-profit folk music and arts organization. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $7.00 on your way in, and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children under 12 are free. It s Almost Time for Spring Festival! Folk Project Spring 2009 Festival April 17 19, 2009 Star Lake Camp, Bloomingdale, NJ Our first full festival at Star Lake Camp is just around the corner, taking place later this month and I m happy to say that registrations have been coming in at a fast and furious pace. The deadline for Early Bird registration, which offers a $10 discount on admission, is March 27, and the deadline for all registration is April 10. A week later, it s on to Star Lake Camp, where we will be entertained by Small Potatoes, Harvey Reid and the Dave Rowe Trio, as well as Folk Project performers Tom Rhoads and Amy Ksir, Kathy Moser, and Scooter Ferguson. Where we will dance under the direction of caller Dan Black to the tunes of Rumpus and our House Band. The Commons housing is already full up, but we do offer several attractive alternatives. The Cabins are conveniently located a short walk from all of the activities. The rooms contain single cots no upper bunks. You can save a little money over the cost of the Commons and the shared bathrooms can accommodate several people at once, so you probably won t have to wait. If you enjoy your creature comforts, you can stay in the hotel-like Lodge for only a slight increase over the Commons prices. You get a room with twin beds and a private bath and plenty of peace and quiet. The Lodge is a bit over a mile from the concert hall, just a 5- minute drive. We will reserve choice parking spaces for you so that you can come and go easily. Or you might consider commuting from home. Star Lake is only a half hour from Morristown. You can save money and stay in your own bed. If you re not registered yet, there s no time like the present. There s a flyer included in this newsletter for your convenience or you can register online at But make sure to get your registration in as soon as possible. The deadline is looming and you will not want to miss this festival. See you at Star Lake! Mark will make a thorough investigation and report in the future. Ad hoc Committee on Compensation Policy: Andy read the report of the Committee and moved to pass it as official Board policy. A very long discussion followed. It was finally tabled until next meeting to allow for off-line discussion to resolve the remaining points of disagreement. He distributed a partially finished draft based on a template from the Pro Bono folks. Minstrel: Mike reports that they had a very good month in February. Jeremy Kittel and David Mallett and the demonstration of contra dancing were all successful, either financially or artistically, or both. He s started to post Minstrel fliers in local establishments. Future highlights are Michael Smith on the 20th, Tracy Grammer on Sept 25, and Mike himself on July 3. Staffing: Sandie needs volunteers. Jim King gave kudos to Hartmann for a well-run show and door last Friday. HSNOI: Ralph says they taped two good shows in Feb. He was especially knocked out by Bob Conroy & Norm Pederson. Jacob Johnson was good too! Mike reports that Ralph is well enough recently to accept a booking at the Minstrel. He and Al Podbur will be opening for the Wiyos. S n T: Connie reports that they are actively looking for a new venue. Special Concerts: The Special Concerts Committee has decided to give a $ donation to the New Jersey Jazz Society s Educational Scholarship (NJJS). The Society was helpful in getting word of this event out to their members, and also came out and set up a Jazz info table. Festival: Lori reports that Festival registration is going well. The Commons are sold out and we have 86 total registrations, with 66.5 paid adults. Margaret pointed out that there are still Festival scholarships available. Good of the Order is elsewhere in the newsletter. Talk to Eddie if you ve had or know about someone who s had a significant event in their lives recently. Adjournment: 10:35m. The next meeting will be on April 7 at Eddie and Robin Roffman s house in Randolph. GOOD OF THE ORDER/COMMUNITY NEWS This is a place to share news about memorable events and challenges you have faced in the past month with your Folk Project Community. Please send details for inclusion in this column to Eddie Roffman, eroffman@optonline.net. Larry Flanagan is a grand daddy! He say s I am now both very happy and officially old. His newly born twin granddaughters Ella and Brooke are beautiful and wonderful. Congratulations! Hartmann, one of our most enthusiastic and hard-working volunteers, has been developing a website called DenvilleLiving.com. Check it out. There are lots of interesting community oriented links. Margaret Crowl is continuing her guitar lessons with Kathy Moser. Margaret says Kathy is a great teacher, and she lets her work in the lefty backward style that Margaret prefers. Mike Agranoff has not been having a good month. He had a root canal and a colonoscopy. We hear that he might be writing a new blues song, complaining about getting it in both ends! Andy Koenig went to a protest rally for the first time in about 40 years. He was protesting government waste. Andy is now listed on Facebook friend s pages of three nationally known columnists. Joe Petraitis is a grandfather too! Joe and Donna announce with joy that Cole Joseph (nickname CJ, weighing 7lb, 3 oz) was born to their son Marc and wife Jennifer on February 10th. Betsy Rose (Elizabeth Lachowicz) and the Chicago Fire are excited that they ll be playing an opening slot at the Minstrel on April 24. Thomas Lachowicz is excited to be coming home for spring break in March. Eddie and Robin Roffman are safely home from their Mediterranean Cruise. They both say, It was great, and we saw so much. In April, they have tickets for the Wagner Ring Cycle at the Metropolitan Opera. Eddie is hoping to start a new part-time cantorial job at a synagogue in Central NJ. When he went for his audition and interview last month, he was excited to discover Folk Project members Tim and Abby Rutka in the congregation.
