VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE 3 DEC 2008 District President Mike Deputy Thanks For Harmony It s holiday time and we all have much to be thankful for. I m especially thankful for wonderful barbershop harmony friends I ve come to know and respect from across the Rocky Mountain District. Our Society mission to enrich lives through harmony is really brought to life in the holiday season. Choruses, quartets, VLQ s, most every configuration of barbershoppers will be performing to appreciative audiences during the next few weeks. I salute your hard work learning and rehearsing. I encourage you to sing and perform with passion and with peace in your heart as you make beautiful harmonious music with your fellow barbershoppers. In the spirit of the holiday season, I hope you take a moment to make a positive statement to a chapter mate or barbershopper friend. Look for opportunities to compliment others. Everyone loves to receive a sincere compliment and it will make you feel satisfaction as you recognize good things being done by others. In that vein I compliment you, as a RMD barbershopper, on being among the Society s finest. Our district continues a long tradition of musical excellence and service to others. You can take pride that our youth programs and harmony education are excellent. We have wonderful chapters all across the mountain west that are striving to offer great fellowship and fun to their members all the while promoting great a capella harmony. On behalf of all RMD members I send congratulations on your successes and my most sincere wish for happy and safe holidays for all. RMD Leadership Opportunities The RMD is seeking qualified and eager leaders for the following opportunities: District Historian Conventions Director Nominees can be sent to Woody Woods woody@grwffyn.com Mike Rod Woody Merle George Lee John Len Tony Shawn Dan Phil

VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE 4 DEC 2008 Executive VP Woody Woods Members of the Rocky Mountain District, greetings from your ExVP and incoming President! We have a slate of officers and a full year with exciting things happening. First, the officers: President Woody Woods Immediate Past President Mike Deputy Executive Vice President Lee Taylor Secretary Dick Stark Treasurer David Myers Music and Performance Dan Clark (returning) Contest and Judging John Coffin (returning) Events Duane Bosveld Youth In Harmony Phil Ricks (returning) Chorus Director Development John Elving Chapter Support & Leadership Lee Taylor (returning) Bulletin Editor Steve Jackson (returning) Webmaster James Harper (returning) As you can see we have a good mix of new and returning officers. What s happening this year? Spring in Las Vegas as a joint convention with the Far Western District. This is a first for the Society. We ll be having the chairman of the contest and judging system here to oversee the running of the contest as well as the man who programs the computers for the scoring analyses and official scoring summaries working to ensure that the contest runs smoothly and everything is accurate. Please plan on being there because not only will you hear our best quartets, but you ll hear the Far Western District s best quartets also. In addition there will be a high school quartet contest. More Great Barbershop Arrangements are Just a Click Away! The Society has released 64 arrangements from the Heritage of Harmony Songbook, a great collection of Public Domain music compiled and arranged by the Society in the late 1980s. Go to the Get Music/Free Download section of the Society website and scroll down to the Heritage of Harmony section. These songs are available for free download for all members of the Barbershop Harmony Society. (All other rights reserved.) Enjoy classics like Beautiful Dreamer, Alexander s Ragtime Band, Moonlight Bay, and many more. Many of the songs have short stories about the songs and composers along with background about the song. For you collectors out there, the full songbook is still available for purchase at the Harmony Marketplace. As always, questions about the contest suitability of any song/arrangement should be directed to the judging community and measured against current contest rules. Ask before you sing. Speaking of quartets, there will be a quartet chain letter that will start on New Year s Day with a quartet in Albuquerque, Denver, and Salt Lake City. Each quartet will sing a song, log in to the district website, post the fact that they sang and then each member will get three different men to sing either a song or a tag and do the same thing. This will continue until every man in the district has sung in a quartet or until July 31 st when the scoring will end. The man in each voice part that sings in the most quartets will win two registrations to the fall convention. So if you re interested in some New Year s Day singing stand by for the announcement of the quartets that will start in each area. Mike Deputy, our Immediate Past President has agreed to head up a Rocky Mountain Harmony Brigade that will kick off in the Spring of If you like to sing in quartets, this is certainly the place for you. As we get things firmed up, we ll keep sending information to you. A final man to remember is Tony Pranaitis who does yeoman s work on the RMD Weekly. Because of his efforts, which he has agreed to continue, there is up to date information passed throughout the district on upcoming events and items of interest from the society. I m looking forward to a wonderful year of singing in 2009 and would like to make it the Year of the Quartet in the Rocky Mountain District RMD Board & RMD Administration District President Woody Woods, Denver/Colo. Dan Clark, Music & Performance VP Yep, we never get enough of that thrill we feel when the audience is going to come out of their seats at the end of that last chord. How can we make it happen more often? One answer is to take advantage of your Society's marvelous invention, the Standing Ovation Program, fondly called SOP. Most of you are familiar with SOP, but in Rocky Mountain District we haven't utilized this great tool as effectively as we might. SOP was designed by that master of the standing ovation, Lloyd Steinkamp, and the good news is three-fold: IT'S EASY! IT WORKS! YOU CAN DO IT TOO! When we have SOP Reviewers scattered all over this huge district, a quick phone call to the District SOP guy (me for the time being) will hook you up with a certified SOP Reviewer to come to your next show. He (or she) will be at your show venue with eyes and ears wide open to evaluate every aspect of your performance-----from the lighting in the parking lot to the friendliness of the ticket takers to the sound of your final tag----you'll get an honest, friendly, private report of how your show came off. And it costs you only the price of a couple of tickets to the show, and maybe a little travel reimbursement. To make it work, we need lots of certified Reviewers, in all corners of RMD. And to get those reviewers certified is easy too. Come to Rocky Mountain Harmony College in February and enroll in our SOP class. Brad Ayers, one of our District's certified reviewers will be teaching the elements of how to conduct an effective SOP, and you'll love it! This is a class for REGULAR BARBERSHOPPERS, not necessarily for officers, directors, judges---although they are all welcome----we need people who know what makes a good show, who are able to talk with their buddies and point out problems, boost the good things, in short---help you get that Standing Ovation every time. Come join Brad and your friends at Rocky Mountain Harmony College in February.

VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE 6 DEC 2008 RMD Music & Performance VP Dr. Dan Clark ROCKY MOUNTAIN HARMONY COLLEGE FEB 6-8, Barbershop harmony galore in the incredible YMCA of the Rockies, Estes Park! Final negotiations for room and tuition charges are complete, and are outlined on the registration forms available in the special Fall Convention VE and to EVERYBODY on the District website, at RMDsing.org. You'll have classes on Vocal Production, Barbershop Theory, Arranging, Directing, Presentation, and more. By popular demand, you'll have an opportunity to sit in with a panel of three International Judges, see and hear what they look for on the contest stage. Your quartet can have coaching from some of the Society's best. You can sing with a hundred (or so) of your barbershop buddies in the annual RMHC EVERYMAN CHORUS, directed by one of our distinguished director faculty members. As a member of this terrific chorus, you will sing on the Saturday night show. Get your chorus to apply for a chorus coaching session (only three slots available). The chorus with the greatest percentage of membership attending will have the $100 coaching fee waived. The famous RMHC AFTERGLOW will again be a bonanza, and a chance for your quartet to sing in front of friends (no solid objects will be thrown by members of the afterglow audience.) Blue shiny sponges will be issued to the first 20 baritones attending. Have yours autographed by Jonny Moroni Editor. And, get this: A BARBERSHOP BARGAIN BASEMENT DEAL. The early bird registration last year was extremely popular, and we have talked the YMCA into giving us the same dates we had last year. Full tuition (covers any and all classes) for those registering after January 1 is $80.00; HOWEVER, you early birds have two chances to save some bucks: Registrations by Jan 1 are $ DON'T MISS THIS HARMONIOUS WEEKEND Syd Libsack syd@stormfrontquartet.com Rich Knight, lead of the Gas House Gang, will be part of the terrific coaching staff at the RMHC Everything You Wanted To Know About RMHC Faculty and coaching staff are in place for February 6-7, only two and a half months away. We are again blessed with some superstars in our Society coming on board, and now we just need YOU. We'll have an outstanding quartet coaching staff, starring Rich Knight, the great lead singer of the Gashouse Gang. He will be joined by Tim, Eric, Jonny, and Chris, the amazingly talented men of Vocal Spectrum. All five of these gentlemen are, of course, gold medal quartet champions, known by barbershoppers worldwide. In addition, we will have some of our faculty doing quartet coaching in their spare time: three International judges-john Coffin, Rod Sgrignoli, & Chris Richards. Our chorus clinician will be Jim DeBusman, longtime music staff man from our International Headquarters. Jim will be doing chorus coaching, teaching a beginning directors class, and directing the popular EVERYMAN CHORUS in two songs on the Saturday night show. EVERYMAN is open to every registrant in the school, and this year you'll be singing "Hello Mary Lou" and the Rob Hopkins arrangement of "I'll Be Seeing You," stock # Class offerings will include Barbershop Music Theory, taught by Matt Swann of Denver. Matt is a music educator, and a gold medal college quartet champion from a few years back. Matt will again be teaching Barbershop Arranging, one of our popular offerings at last year's school. He may also coach a quartet or two if his schedule permits. Through The Eyes Of The Judges, the very popular three hour seminar will be taught by our three International Judges, Rod Sgrignoli (Music), John Coffin (Presentation), and Chris Richards (Singing). BECOME A STANDING OVATION PROGRAM REVIEWER A new class this year will feature Brad Ayers, Denver Mile High, a certified Standing Ovation Reviewer. Brad will be teaching the rudiments of carrying out an SOP review. He is seeking to certify as many of our District Barbershoppers as possible so that any chorus can be able to get a Standing Ovation review for any show with a simple phone call or . Becoming certified will not only elevate your own performances, but enable you to assist other barbershoppers to do likewise. Chris Richards, Denver, will offer two hours of instruction in Vocal Production, aimed at helping improve your quartet or chorus sound. John Coffin will teach a two hour segment on Presentation how to bring your audience to its feet. We'll have lots of singing, a great Saturday Night Show, starring Vocal Spectrum, and our usual Rocky Mountain Afterglow. Register NOW! The early-bird discount ($65) is good until Jan 1. Come sing with your friends! All registration info is on the RMD website

VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE 7 DEC 2008 Vocal Spectrum is our headliner quartet Saturday evening as well as being on the faculty. Quartet members will be doing some of the quartet coach- ing, too. If next year follows tradition there should be plenty of opportunity to sing a tag with Tim, Eric, Chris or Jonny. Do you think they really can sing that high, especially at this altitude? Mike Deputy Singing For Life Blood Drive 2009 By Tony Pranaitis, Denver MountainAires Singing For Life project manager The Barbershop Harmony Society is moving forward with Singing For Life after a very successful initial campaign. Let's recap three major accomplishments: 176 chapters registered Over 3000 units of blood were collected The Society received some very valuable media coverage and community awareness Everything you need to begin planning for 2009 can be found at The launching of the registration process will begin in September. January 31st is the deadline for registering. The event can be any day in May. If you read my article about the Denver MountainAires experience with Singing For Life, you saw that planning for an event this big in May needs to begin in August. If your community does not require planning that far in advance, you can relax FOR A WHILE, but registration will begin in September. PLEASE REGISTER! It closes at the end of January. If you wait until after Feb. 1st, there just isn t time to do it right, and registration will not be possible. Work together with your local blood collection agency (they know how to promote these things!) and work together with any other chapters in your vicinity. Collaborate on media exposure. Make a big splash. If you have any questions, contact me at or me at TonyChiro@juno.com and I ll help you navigate the process. By Dan Clark, Music and Performance VP How would you like to have an experienced Barbershopper come to your chapter show, enjoy what your chorus and quartets have put together, and then sit down with your director, or your music team or maybe your entire chorus, and discuss with you how your program went? Maybe even give you a suggestion or two about what might have been even better; possibly even propose a change here or there which might produce more STANDING OVATIONS. That's what SOP is about. We can help each other by being good observers at our neighbor chapter shows every time we perform, and it costs only a couple of complementary tickets and maybe a little travel money. Here in Rocky Mountain District, we're trying to recruit lots of Joe Barbershoppers to become SOP reviewers, so your chorus can have access to a valuable tool to make your shows more appealing. Becoming an SOP reviewer is easy, takes a modest amount of time and effort, and it's fun! YOU can do it too. Come to Rocky Mountain Harmony College Feb. 6-8, 2009 and register for the SOP class. Brad Ayers, Denver Mile High, became a certified SOP trainer at the International Convention in Nashville, and he will be leading the SOP discussion at RMHC. We need lots of you to come to school with Brad, learn the mysteries of reviewing a Barbershop Show, then start sharing your talents with your friends and neighbors. As someone (I think it was Ev Nau) once said, "It's fun, it's easy, and you can do it too."

VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE 8 DEC 2008 RMD Youth Chorus to Pasadena 52eighty to compete at Midwinter Youth Contest By Tony Pranaitis The Rocky Mountain District will be represented in the Second Annual Youth Chorus Festival at Midwinter. A new youth chorus from the Denver area called 52eighty (for those who wonder about the name...denver elevation above sea level is 5280 feet) will represent the Rocky Mountain District in Pasadena next January. Approximately 30 young men under the age of 30 (average age 25 or less) ranging from high school students who attended Summer Harmony Camp in Estes Park to members of barbershop chapters to young men skilled at a cappella singing but not experienced barbershoppers have joined together to ring chords and are excited to take their sound to Pasadena. This is a substantial Harmony Foundation project, each member attending Youth Chorus is receiving lodging and one meal thanks to the Foundation. There are obviously other costs (transportation, remaining meals, music, uniforms...to name a few) above what Harmony Foundation is providing. The approximate balance per person is $300. Sponsors are needed. One Denver barbershopper, Don Groomer, has stepped up to the plate and pledged $ , and Don challenges every barbershopper to kick in at least $ Considering that Don's gift was 50 times what he's asking you to do, I respect his position to make that challenge. Note elsewhere that the Society has established a new Youth membership category, with no dues for the first year of membership and 50% dues for each year until the member turns 25. Our District has matched this policy (and your chapter is urged to do likewise). Most under the age of 25 are either students or on the bottom rung of the ladder in the workforce. Removing and minimizing economic obstacles will allow young men to appreciate being one of us and enjoying what we enjoy, with the obvious hope that they will continue for most or all of the rest of their lives. Helping these young men go to Pasadena, sing the songs they worked so hard perfecting, and then hearing the top five International quartets from 2008, the Seniors Quartet Championship, and the other Youth Choruses, will provide them a barbershop experience of a lifetime. If you can sponsor one (or more) Youth at $ each, that would be FANTASTIC. If you can't do that, do what's comfortable...but AT LEAST do $ If there is another Youth Chorus from within the RMD going to Pasadena (I don't know of any), you should sponsor the chorus that is closest to you. If 52eighty is the only Youth Chorus from the RMD, then they are your District representatives...everyone in the District is challenged to participate. This should not conflict at all with the admonition to become an Ambassador of Song. Obviously, Harmony Foundation needs your support to underwrite projects like this, plus the Harmony Explosion Camps and the International Collegiate Quartet Contest and Director's College scholarships and so much more. This is all the more reason for you to become an Ambassador of Song (or any contribution to Harmony Foundation). Funding the Youth Chorus Festival is CONSISTENT with the Harmony Foundation mission. In fact, you could do BOTH simply by opting for "Donor Choice" (where up to 30% of your gift can be directed to a Chapter or a District). If you become an Ambassador of Song at $5.00 per month, 30% of that gift would be $18.00 (annually), which could go to your chapter and you could request that your Chapter use those funds to assist Youth Chorus Festival needs within your District. Because the need is immediate (Midwinter is January 27) please open your heart and make your gift as soon as possible. Check or money order should be made payable to: 52eighty and sent to: Mike Davidson Park Meadows Drive Apt. 228 Lonetree, CO mike@nexusqt.com If you can't make it to Pasadena to personally enjoy the performance of 52eighty, you can catch the video of their performance on the 52eighty website soundoftherockies.com/52eighty/ immediately following the Midwinter Convention. Thanks for your support. IT S GREAT TO BE A RMD BARBERSHOPPER!

VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE 9 DEC 2008 Assistant Director Matt Swan We have our website up to make donations via Pay Pal. Look for the section that says "Donate" We will be performing on the Sound of the Rockies Christmas show on Dec. 13th at Denver University (two shows). Details for the show at We will be hosting a show on January 24th at Grandview High school as our final fundraiser. It will start at 7:00 pm and we will have local quartets (BHS and SAI) performing. 52Eighty will be showing off our contest package and other great repertoire. We have raised roughly $2000 so far and our goal is around $15,000 for operating costs and to get 30 members to Pasadena. Any and all help our district brothers can give is appreciated and the sooner the better, it's almost time to buy airline tickets and uniforms. Director Chris Vaughn Our youth chorus is doing our best to fund the entire trip for all the guys who are participating. We anticipate on having about 30 guys make the trip to Pasadena in a few months. This chorus consists of some existing barbershoppers, some kids from the RMD youth festival which was held earlier this year along with some college and high school kids that have never been associated with barbershop in the past. We re trying to get these kids hooked for the future of the Society. They all seem to be very excited about it and 52Eighty is sounding really good. We are going to the local chapters and asking for support. We already have Sound of the Rockies, the Denver MountainAires, Longmont and the Loveland chapters on board. They have decided to support the cause by donating money to help these kids have the experience of a life time. Our goal is $15,000 and we are sitting at $2,000 right now. It will cost about $350 per kid to make the trip. The Society and the Harmony Foundation does support this by providing rooms and a meal for everyone once we get there. The things we need to pay for on our end are transportation to Pasadena (the biggest expense), music, copyright fees and outfits. We do have a sponsor that has agreed to match anything that the chorus raises. This is a really good situation for us. If donating to the Denver youth chorus could be part of your agenda, any support would be much appreciated. Chris 52eighty (303)

VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE 10 DEC 2008 Chapter Officer Training Rocky Mountain style By Lee Taylor, CSLT VP This is a photo taken of the group at our second rehearsal held on October 11th. The chorus will soon be accepting donations online through a Paypal account at Baritone Section Leader and PR guy, Mike Davidson says they have their new public website up and you'll be able to pledge your support to the chorus via the net. Be on the look out for announcements from your chapter" In three successive weekends in November, we conducted installments of the Rocky mountain Leadership Academy. Held in Denver, Eden Utah and Albuquerque, these oneday seminars involved 47 men, representing 16 chapters. These men shared their experiences and learned leadership essentials from some the finest trainers in RMD and beyond. The areas of Governance, Chapter Development, Marketing and Music were ably taught by a stellar faculty, including Dennis Cook, Paul Didier, Tony Pranaitis, Rod Sgrignoli, Mike Deputy, John Coffin, Gary Forsberg, Woody Woods and Bill Biffle. In the Chapter Planning sessions, Chapter Counselors worked with chapter leaders to flesh our their annual plans. CC's sharing their talents this year included Tony Pranaitis, Paul Barlow, Ed Simons, Carl Schultz and Brett Foster. A special thanks to COTS Coordinator Bill Lahti, who made the Denver seminar run smoothly, and to hosts Rod Sgrignoli, Mike Deputy and Kirk Benson who offered their professional and personal space as venues. RMD Weekly Update Editor: Tony Pranaitis VP Member Services & Financial Development/Harmony Foundation Vice President HIGH SCHOOL QUARTET CONTEST AT LAS VEGAS PRELIMS At this coming Spring Convention in Las Vegas, FWD has invited us to participate in their High School Quartet Contest. All competing quartets and their music educators register for the High School Contest only, and automatically receive complimentary registration for the convention. The quartet and their music educator are responsible for their meals, travel expenses, and hotel rooms. In many cases, local chapters sponsor quartets to help offset these costs. The FWD Association of District Quartet Champions provides judges, who not only score the quartets but provide post-contest coaching sessions which inspire the young singers immensely. The focus of these A&R sessions is not so much talking about what goes on in the contest, or talking about what it means to be good singers. It is much more effective and higher impact for the young men to be on their feet experiencing a personal coaching session from some of the best quartets in the Society. The HS afterglow has really developed into a wonderful late night party, and is one of the highlights of the weekend for the boys that attend. Lots of soda and pizza and snacks, and it goes on for hours. No adults (and no alcohol) are allowed in, just the kids and top five adult quartets who come in and sing a song, then they teach the kids a tag. They sing that tag several times, then allow the guys to quartet the tag with the teaching quartet. The adult quartets also share how they got started singing, which is also inspiring to the kids. Any RMD chapters that know of high school quartets interested in participating should contact RMD President-elect Woody Woods at execvp@rmdsing.org.

BQPA Mission Statement The Barbershop Quartet Preservation Association is an ever-growing group of singers dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of the traditional style of barbershop quartet music described in our style definition. Barbershop harmony developed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is one of only two uniquely American musical art forms. We believe that barbershop harmony is an important component of the American cultural fabric. BQPA is committed to perpetuating the traditional style of barbershop quartet singing by performing the music as it was during its zenith of popularity. We do this for our own amusement and to educate and proselytize the American public. We encourage barbershop quartet activities based on the enjoyment of singing four-part harmony in an atmosphere of fun and good fellowship. We wish to serve and educate our communities through the medium of barbershop quartet singing.

VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE 12 DEC 2008 Outstanding In Front Not Just for Aspiring Directors Anymore By John Elving, incoming CDD VP Director of the Future has a new name and a new image, Outstanding in Front The Chorus Director Development program, Director of the Future, has taken on a new name, some minor changes and is not just for Directors anymore. If your chapter is in need of finding a director, assistant director, section leaders, or perhaps you are looking to build a more functional music team, hosting an Outstanding In Front Class could help. Outstanding In Front is a one-day introductory class designed to cater to the various needs of your music program by providing an opportunity for individuals to gain an understanding of what it takes to be a leader in front of your chorus. Whether you are a novice director and need to hone some basic skills, or someone who has never been in front of a chorus and think directing just might be something you could do, but haven't a clue how to begin, this class is for you. Outstanding In Front also focuses on the leadership skills of section leaders and music team members who are interested in supporting the success of the music program during your weekly chapter meeting. The goals of the Outstanding In Front program are: To provide an opportunity for individuals to gain an understanding of what it means to be a leader in front of an ensemble To increase the directing, teaching and musical skill of our non-directors in a positive environment To inspire men to entertain the thought that they could become a musical leader To provide capable individuals able to assist their front-line director To decrease director burnout To have a broader base of talent upon which to draw when there is a director vacancy Some of the topics covered are: Conducting patterns, and their proper use Elements of the warm-up Being a vocal coach Leadership qualities Proper posture Directing opportunities It is our hope that during the coming years we will be able to offer the Outstanding In Front program at various District schools, but the great advantage to the program is that this personalized attention is offered at the chapter level for your direct benefit. The Rocky Mountain District is committed to providing you with certified trainers, experienced in working with your various musical leaders, and those who are interested in becoming musical leaders, to enhance your weekly rehearsal experience. For more information or to schedule an Outstanding In Front program for your chapter, please contact John Elving, 2009 Chorus Director Development VP at: leaderman@earthlink.net or at Calling All Chapters! We hope you will take advantage of the single biggest public Relations and membership recruitment opportunity ever presented to chapters of the Barbershop Harmony Society. American Harmony, the documentary, had a very exciting and successful screening at the Barbershop Harmony Society s 2008 International Convention in Nashville. Now the producers, Aengus James (who is also the writer/director) and Colin Miller, want to take it beyond the barbershop devotees. The film, which is a tribute to the human musical spirit, is more than three years in the making and was edited by Kate Amend, the editor of two Oscar-winning documentaries. American Harmony was just nominated for a 2008 IDA/ Alan Ett Music Documentary Award, presented by the International Documentary Association. The goal is to get the film into theaters across North America so that everyone will have the opportunity to see it on the big screen. A major player who has experience in distributing independent films is very interested in American Harmony. This company has a great deal of experience marketing niche films by leveraging the built in fan base for a project at the grass roots level. The method by which this person will commit resources to promote the film depends upon the Society's level of support. For more information on how your chapter can promote American Harmony to attract new members, build awareness and raise funds for your chapter, visit americanharmony

VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE 13 DEC 2008 Ignition, 2008 International 16th place quartet, has decided to hang it up. We have had a great four years singing for our chapter, district, fans, and friends but all good things must come to an end. We have had a great run and we are sad to see it end. Each day that we have been singing together has been a fun and exciting challenge. From our District win in 2005 to our Top 20 international finish in 2008, from our local chapter shows to our performances across the country we have enjoyed singing and performing together. We will cherish these memories for years to come. Although Ignition! has ended, none of us are planning on giving up this wonderful hobby. In fact, there are already some things in the works. Our lead, Curtis Terry, has already won another district gold with a new group called McPhly. Our baritone, Matt Swann, is co-directing and singing with the RMD youth chorus 52eighty who are getting ready for the Midwinter competition in Pasadena. Our bass, Denny Malone, is still arranging, and polishing his quartet gold from 1983, and our tenor, Dan Testa, is working on some opportunities to continue singing and competing with a quartet in the future. All and all we are happy with what we accomplished but sad to see the curtain come down. A special thank you goes out to Roger Olson and James Taylor, Ignition s originating tenor and baritone, for your talents and for helping us get the group off the ground. We would also like to thank the Sound of the Rockies chorus, the Rocky Mountain District, our fans, and friends for all you have done for us. We would especially like to thank our wives and families; Mary, Eli, Donna, Meagan, Molly, Kristi, and Amaiya for all your love and support. We couldn t have done it without you. Revolution has also decided to call it quits. Three quartets in the RMD gone in one swell foop! In Harmony Ignition! Quartet Dan Testa Tenor Curtis Terry Lead Matt Swann Baritone Dennis Malone Bass Fellow family, friends, and fans: Since the summer of 2003, NeXus has been blessed to meet new friends around the world, sing in the best venues, and spend time with our great barbershop family. Our travels have taken us from our own living room, to the hills of Arizona, all across the Midwest, and as far as the mountains of Anchorage, Alaska. As many of you know, our bass singer, Mark Zenk, accepted a position with his company and made a move to lead a sales team in Shanghai China. As well, our lead singer, Ryan Wilson, has been singing baritone with another quartet. In Colorado Springs this past September, Ryan s new quartet, McPhly, won the 2008 Rocky Mountain District quartet championship. It comes with great sadness to inform you that NeXus has decided to retire. The past five years have been an unbelievable ride, and those years will be remembered as some of the best of our lives. Since the very first chord rang, we have loved every moment and will greatly miss the chance to sing for you again. There are many individuals who have made NeXus possible. We would like to thank Nate Zenk, our original tenor, and youngest member ever to win a Rocky Mountain District championship. His talents are unrivaled and he helped shape what NeXus was. Many thanks also go to Sally Davidson, who could not help but sit on the steps commenting on how we could become better. She graciously gave of her time and talents, and her efforts fashioned our sound and look. Finally, we would be remiss without saying thank you to Diane Zenk, the greatest Costco enchilada cook of them all. She was always willing to feed the boys, and never minded when we stayed out too long in the hot tub. A special thanks to our incredible coaches Kim Hulbert, Cindy Hansen, Chad and Brandon Guyton, Darin Drown and Jim Clark. We thank each and every one of you for supporting NeXus. We are sure that you will see us in other groups down the road, but we sincerely feel blessed to have shared our talents with you over these past five years. 14 VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE FALL DEC 2008 RMD Member Services VP Your Chapter s Youth Membership Dues Policy Written by Dr. Tony Pranaitis What IS Youth Membership? The Society has dissolved the Student Membership (available to students ) and replaced it with a Youth Membership category (under age 26, student or not). What is the purpose of Youth Membership? To remove the financial obstacle of membership for young men in school or just starting out in their careers. How much are Society dues for Youth? The first year of membership (Y-1), dues are $0 but there is a $10 processing fee. In the second year of membership and subsequent years (Y-2) before age 26, dues are 50% of regular dues. How much are Rocky Mountain District dues for Youth? The RMD, as authorized unanimously by the House of Delegates, has voted to mirror the Society plan, with $0 dues for Y-1 and 50% of regular dues for Y-2. How much are CHAPTER dues for Youth? That is entirely up to the individual chapter. In the RMD, chapters are urged to mirror the Society and District plans, but chapters may do as they please. Make sure your chapter has addressed this question, and notified Nashville of your Youth dues policy. How much does the Society presume chapter Youth dues will be? The default that the Society presumes when processing chapter dues is $0 for Y-1, and then for Y-2 (until the member reaches age 26) the dues are whatever your chapter Student dues previously were. How does a chapter change its Youth dues? By approving a motion to the chapter board, and reporting that motion to the Society Membership staff in Nashville Again, it is recommended that each chapter at least CONSIDER a mirror of the Society and District plan for Y-1 and Y2. Member under the age of 26 ( Youth Membership ) (Y-1) Under age 26, first year of membership in BHS (Y-2) Second and all subsequent years of Youth Membership The year he reaches 26 years of age Society dues $0 dues $10 processing fee 50% of regular Society dues 100% of regular Society dues Rocky Mountain District dues $0 dues 50% of regular district dues 100% of regular district dues YOUR CHAPTER DUES YOUR CHAPTER MUST DE- CIDE (*) YOUR CHAPTER MUST DECIDE (**) 100% of regular chapter dues (*) The BHS collects your chapter dues, and the default for Y-1 is $0 chapter dues (**) The BHS collects your chapter dues, and the default for Y-2 (year two and all subsequent years under age 26) is your existing chapter student dues rate. In order for your chapter to change these default settings for dues collection under the age of 26, your chapter must notify Nashville of your Youth dues structure. Allow 45 days for changes to be implemented. Tips for ALL members Visit ebiz at and click on "MEMBER LOG IN." You can view your personal information on your chapter roster. Update the information as needed. With a current and correct address, you will receive notice of membership renewal. Renew online and the renewal is INSTANTANEOUS. 17 VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE 17 DEC 2008 Now Is the Time For All Good Editors Now Is the Time For All Good Editors By John Elving, RMD BETY Coordinator The time has come for recognizing your chapter bulletin editors. Last year there were only two entries out of the entire RMD. Either our bulletin editors have all retired, or they have become shy and retiring! It s time all of our RMD editors let the rest of the Society know that we are a district that is full of editors who are striving to inform their chapters with the very best information to keep members well informed. You may say, My publication isn t of high enough quality to be a winner. As a fellow BE, I will say that you are all winners in taking on the mantle of bulletin editor for your chapter. Look at this as a way to make vast improvements in your editing skills. I can attest to the effectiveness of the positive feedback received from the judges and how it has made me a better editor. This year, for the first time, we have two separate contests that should have a significant impact on the quality of your work. It is through judging in these contests that your product can be improved and, after all, that is the name of the game. It is my goal to keep the Rocky Mountain District at the top of the international level scoring summary in each of the two contests. One contest is for the hardcopy bulletins we have all worked on for so many years and faithfully published. It doesn t make any difference if you publish a monthly bulletin, as I do, or a weekly bulletin (I also do this). You may publish a bimonthly or bi-weekly bulletin. All the same judging parameters apply to them all. As I said, improvement is the name of the game. The second contest is for electronic bulletins. This was called the online version, and was limited to one International contest. This year it has been expanded to be part of the district BETY. Here is where many of you can shine. No longer is it just an HTML or PDF version of your hardcopy bulletin, although those are certainly a part of going electronic. It also includes blogs, news columns on your website, s sent out to the membership, almost any form of electronic news dissemination other than text messaging. Not sure you qualify? Try it, you ll find out we want to help improve whatever style of communication you and your chapter decide works best for them. Here are the general guidelines you need to know to enter: All entrants must be a member of PROBE for both 2008, the year being judged, and 2009, the year of judging. This is a very inexpensive membership, only $10 per year, and is a legitimate chapter expense. Only ONE (two-year) membership is required for each person entering. In order to qualify for the IBC, editors must have published at least six issues of a monthly or bi-monthly bulletin during the contest year (2008), or six months of bulletins on a weekly or biweekly schedule. Submission of HARDCOPY bulletins Fill out and send a copy of the entry form (found on the PROBE website, or by contacting John Elving or Steve Jackson.) Monthly or bi-monthly: Six copies each of two consecutive months. Bi-weekly: Six copies each of four consecutive issues, collated by month. Weekly: Six copies each of eight consecutive issues, collated by month. Two copies of each issue must be offthe-press copies, while the others may be photocopies. Submission of ELECTRONIC bulletins The editor will a copy of the entry form (available via the PROBE website, John Elving or Steve Jackson) with the two URL's of his two consecutive monthly or bi-monthly issues or four consecutive biweekly issues or eight consecutive weekly issues. If the ELECTRONIC issues are on a Members Only page, Logins and Passwords must be supplied. No hard-copy print-outs or copies on CDs will be accepted for ELECTRONIC judging. Judging will be done by certified PROBE judges. Each judge will not only score you, but will also include a critique sheet to help you become a better bulletin editor, whether hardcopy or electronic. If you would rather not have your scores published you can request that you receive comments only. You scores would not be judged against any other editor, but you would be able to gain much knowledge from the judges comments. When all is completed, please send your bulletins to me. Include an envelope for return mail. Remember, Judges score sheets and comment sheets will be included along with your original bulletins. The bulletins will be sent back to each editor after the RMD Spring Convention, where the BETY will be announced. Deadline for submission of bulletins, whether HARDCOPY or ELEC- TRONIC is January 17, All submissions need to be sent to: John Elving 6806 Peaceful Pines Rd Black Hawk, SD leaderman@earthlink.net Rocky Mountain District Harmonize Wyoming COME TO CHEYENNE For the 2009 Fall Convention Sept

VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE 18 DEC 2008 Leadership Academy Why only four tracks? Realizing the fact of life that most chapters are not sending all of the vice presidents on their massive boards to COTS, and that while EVERYONE in a chapter ought to have a job to do, a small number of LEADERS is most efficient, we worked to distill the number of leaders down to the lowest common denominator of all chapter functions. Ironically, just as it takes four parts to sing barbershop harmony, four leaders can work very harmoniously to oversee all essential functions in ANY kind of chapter. This does not mean that they DO everything, but have leadership responsibility to see that everything GETS DONE. Governance, Internal operations, External operations, and Music are the four categories that broadly cover everything that a chapter does. Governance is the legal and philosophical head that keeps the eyes focused on where the chapter is going and on the corporate and economic requirements to get there. Obviously this is the domain of the President. Oversight includes the secretary and treasurer. Internal operations refers to Chapter Development members and meetings, or people and programs the hands that create our experience as chapter members and keep us connected with one another. External operations covers publicity, philanthropy, and performances stuff that goes on outside of our meeting hall. Publicity is communication to the public and can also include communication within the chapter. Philanthropy is outreach to youth and schools and support of Harmony Foundation and projects like Singing For Life. Performances covers the business side of events management, both concerts and contests. All of these functions could be said to be the feet of our organization, taking our product and passion from our meeting hall to the world. Written by Dr. Tony Pranaitis This is written from a personal perspective, by one of your district leaders who was appointed to chair a subcommittee to study COTS because of my concern for the issue. While I knew that COTS was rapidly bankrupting our District (and many others), COTS existed for the very noble purpose of producing healthy chapters through competent leadership (but was not succeeding due to dwindling attendance). Prior to this time, I served as District President, during a period when the District President s Council proposed a radical reduction in the size of the Society Board and District Boards of Directors. The proposal, citing greater efficiency in other organizations utilizing this structure, was adopted and immediately these Boards began to experience the freedom of lighter on the feet governance and more focused attention to functional service by the Operations Team (due to removed governance duties). The same could work for chapters. Music is the heart of barbershopping, and the reason we are drawn together. To be effective we must have all four, and all four must operate in harmony and balance. It was also noted in our subcommittee that four leaders could easily fit into a single car, and if one car was driving to Leadership Academy (as it was later named) then three passengers could fit into the car with the driver at no substantial increase in cost. Time and money were determined to be the obstructive factors to attendance, so multiple regional one-day intensive training sessions were instituted to reduce absences. And while many chapter members are willing workers, not all are committed leaders. Reducing the commitment for leadership to four eases the volunteer burden, and makes for more efficient and agile functional operation. We know of one RMD chapter (Boulder) which has adopted this model for its board. The RMD has experienced exactly what was foreseen and predicted by the adoption of this model. The district is governed by a five-man board (President, Executive Vice President, Immediate Past President, Secretary, and Treasurer). All issues of governance and policy are voted by these five (the President doesn t vote unless it is required to break a tie). All functional Vice Presidents are now FREE to focus on their specific area of responsibility, present issues requiring decisions to the five-man board (much easier and swifter than presenting to a twelve-man board), and while every VP is encouraged to submit comments or positions, none are required to study or vote on issues foreign to their areas of expertise. Such a model could be equally beneficial for your chapter board. While the new four-track model of Leadership Academy has ceased the hemorrhage of funds from the District treasury COTS was causing (something we can all be grateful for), the development of team leadership in chapters is still wanting. Even though it only takes ONE DAY out of each chapter leader s busy schedule, and even though it only costs the chapter $35 per leader, and even though only four key leaders are being sought, attendance has been sub-par and mostly represented by the chapters in the strongest condition (who realize the value and practice team leadership planning). A commitment to having a healthy and thriving chapter begins with a commitment of four leaders to attend Leadership Academy. YouTube Video Contest The Society is holding a contest open to all male or female barbershop singer or fans of barbershop music on the planet that runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 31, Participants must answer one or more questions (on video) about how barbershop has impacted their life and then upload their answers to Winners will be selected in two categories: Most entertaining video and Most uplifting and inspirational video; the name of each winner will be announced at the 2009 Midwinter convention in Pasadena. Each winner will receive a brand new Flip Ultra Video Camera, valued at $ For more information, visit

VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE 19 DEC 2008 October 8, 2008 Dear Chapter President: Singing for Life, our Society-wide blood drive, was a solid success in 2008, with 176 chapters participating, representing close to 16,000 performers across North America, according to Bob Ebers, the founder of this program and former Marketing & PR Committee chairman. We will once again be partnering with the American Red Cross (ARC) and America s Blood Centers (ABC) in the U.S. and ABC members Canadian Blood Services (CBS), and Héma-Québec in Canada in an attempt to hold the largest blood and donor recruitment drive in North American history. One donation has the potential to save the lives of up to three people. This year, more than 3,000 units of blood were collected with our American and Canadian blood partners, with the potential of helping improve or save the lives up to 9,000 patients across North America. Héma-Québec reported that 95 donors gave blood at the DDO Community Centre in Montreal, and 23 percent were giving blood for the first time (their average is about 10 percent). At the other end of Montreal (Broussard) they collected another 87 units of blood for a total of 182 donors being serenaded by five choruses (160 singers). At the Surrey Blood Donation Clinic in Surrey, British Columbia, 130 singers from 14 a cappella groups performed for five hours what a treat for donors! Michigan Community Blood Centers collected 120 units of blood from donors with help from the Great Lakes Chorus, who sponsored a blood drive and car show (how s that for creativity?!). Chapters in Traverse City and the St. Joseph areas were also key contributors. United Blood Services of Las Vegas collected 84 units. And these are just some of the success stories. The media coverage was equal to, or in some cases better than, the coverage markets get during the Singing Valentines campaign. In addition, many chapters experienced their first cross-promotional opportunity with other performing arts organizations, and some reported new member prospects as a result. The Society Board has created four specific organizational AIMS for : 1. Chapters grow and retain members 2. Chapters are active in community service 3. Members feel a sense of identity and belonging with the Barbershop Harmony Society 4. Members enjoy and are actively participating in Barbershop Harmony Society activities These aims are now very focused on members and chapters. You ll notice the Singing for Life program supports all four of these aims quite well. The Singing for Life program Helps chapters create an opportunity to SING for others Helps chapters build awareness in their communities Helps chapters establish strategic alliances within their communities Helps chapters unite with other chapters across North America to help save lives Helps chapters create a new vehicle to ATTRACT NEW MEMBERS! Both choruses and quartets should have opportunities to perform in connection with the blood drive. This is a community event, and we ask that your chapter take advantage of this opportunity to build alliances with other musical groups in your community. We encourage your chapter to invite others to participate in this program with you. Your invitations could be sent to a variety of community or church music ensembles, school bands, choirs and orchestras. They can work with you to share their gift of music for this important cause. Based on a survey of participating chapters in 2008, we ve modified the program to help chapters enjoy greater success. The 2009 Singing for Life project encompasses the entire month of May, so that chapters have more flexibility in planning their events. The program will be enhanced with more direct communication from Marketing & Public Relations committee members. A new FAQ is available at outlining the positive changes to make Singing for Life even more successful in Updated radio spot PSAs, posters, flyers and newspaper ads will be available to help your chapter promote this important initiative within your community. Please talk about this project with your chapter leadership now and let Singing for Life bring joy to your community and new potential growth to your chapter. Getting your chapter registered is very quick and easy. As soon as you are ready to join in this effort, please go to and click on the REGISTER YOUR CHAPTER NOW! link as registration is now open. You will be asked for a username, which is BARBERSHOP, and then a password, which is HARMONY. This helps ensure that all information collected is private. Usernames and passwords should be UPPERCASE. Registration will be closed as of January 31, We are asking our chapters to join with a local blood service agency to hold a blood drive in their local community. The hope is that chapters will host a blood drive, and share the message of the need for blood donations while also singing barbershop music for audiences. After you read this information and share it with your chapter board, please read my letter aloud to all chapter members. I believe that all members will view this as a challenge for us to make a difference in our community, and in the United States and Canada. Thank you for all you do as a chapter president and for your chapter members for Singing for Life! Yours truly, J. Noah Funderburg Society President

VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE 20 DEC Singing for Life 2009 International Blood Drive & Donor Recruitment Program FAQ Q: When will this event be held? A: Pick a time that is best for your chapter sometime in the month of May 2009 Q: Why May? A: This month is known of having low blood donor turnout due to travel and holiday plans. This is also a time when blood is needed most because of the increased number of travel-related accidents. Q: What happened with our first project? A: There were 176 chapters that registered and through their efforts, collected over 3000 units of blood. Many lives were saved and new relationships with other performing arts organizations were fostered. In some markets, media coverage for Singing for Life exceeded what has been experienced for chapter Singing Valentines activities. Q: Who will be promoting this event? A: This event is chapter driven! Your chapter should promote locally through chapter members, the local or regional blood collection agency, the local media outlets, and the venue hosting the event. Q: How will this event be promoted? A: Your event partners will be asking your community to come to the blood center, local mall, civic center or other predetermined venue where the drive will take place. Q: What makes this giving experience different? A: This event will stand out from any other blood drive. It will be exciting and entertaining. Donors will be entertained throughout the day with SINGING! This is our gift to say thank you for their gift of life. Q: Will this help us build awareness for barbershop in your community? A: Yes. This is an opportunity to showcase your chapter and what your chapter does in your community. If you attract and recruit a few more members in the process then that s fantastic! Your chapter should take this opportunity to build relationships by networking with other community groups including choirs, bands, schools and churches. The possibilities are unlimited. Q: What kind of external promotion tools will be provided? A: Posters, boilerplate press releases, and PSA radio spots have been produced and are available on the Society s website right now. These tools can be delivered to blood collection agency and to the local media. This is your event! Promote it like any other chapter event. Q: How should we inform the media? A: As with any chapter program you should be developing and maintaining relationships with important media contacts in your area year round. This would be a good time to begin developing or rekindling the relationship you have with your local blood center and leverage the media contacts that may have available. Work with your local blood center to develop a promotional plan. Q: What kind of internal promotional support will be provided by the Society? A: The Society will promote this program internally through Livewire, and The Harmonizer. Stories from members from last years SFL events will be published. The Society will also notify the national wire services and networks sometime during the first quarter of Q: What are some other benefits of this project? Goodwill That s the feeling of knowing you have helped saved a life. Thousands of people you may never know will benefit by the efforts of your members. Every unit of blood has the potential to help save up to four patients: a newborn baby, a burn victim, a car accident survivor, a cancer patient, etc. Pride Barbershoppers across North America can feel proud of their efforts. Media Exposure Because of the nature and size of this event, you will help achieve media exposure that our Society could never afford to pay otherwise. Your chapter and the Barbershop Harmony Society name will be front and center in your community. New Members Your ability to attract new members can be improved through increased public awareness. Q: What does this blood drive have to do with the Society? A: The gift of music is supporting of the gift of life. One of the four Society AIMs is to be more involved in community service. Participating in the Singing for Life Program supports this AIM. Society members are encouraged to give blood, however blood donation is not required. Q: How can I help get things started in my chapter? A: Encourage your Chapter President to appoint a Project Chairman in your chapter very soon. Convince your chapter leadership that this project is an incredible opportunity to foster goodwill and community spirit. The deadline to register your chapter is January 31. Q: Does the agency contact the chapter or does the chapter contact the agency? A: It depends on your region. After you register, instructions will be provided in a confirmation . In most cases, the agency will contact you within two business days. This info will also be discussed in detail when you re contacted by a Society PR & M Committee member within 24 hours of registering. Q: What else is expected of my chapter? Register It is imperative that your chapter registers first before doing anything else at Instructions on how to register your chapter will be provided to your Chapter President and or Secretary. Volunteer - There will be plenty of volunteer opportunities, such as helping with the organization of the blood drive, the logistics, the recruitment, etc. Your chapter should invite other performing arts organizations like community churches, local schools and any other choral group that wish to celebrate with you. Reporting Your chapters will report results. This would include units of blood collected, performances, number of groups participating, location of the event, and media c o v e r a g e achieved. Your chapter should work closely with the blood center s representatives to obtain final numbers.

It is the mission of the RMD to lead and support the efforts of local chapters in contributing to the vision of our Society. The Society s Vision Statement reads The Society is to be an ever-growing fraternity of barbershop-style singers, leading the cause of encouraging vocal music in our schools and communities. The RMD s means of working towards this vision is to provide leadership and structure in the following areas: Increasing membership through member services at the local and district level. Educating and encouraging our members in both quartet and chorus performances in the barbershop style. Training, supporting, and coaching leaders in our local chapters. Supporting and developing youth outreach on a local and district level. Developing chorus directors at the chapter level through local and district workshops. Providing district publications and historical records as well as supporting and educating chapters in communications and public relations. Providing ongoing district events such as conventions, contests, festivals, etc. Providing contests for quartets, choruses, and other ensembles to determine district champions and International contest qualifiers. Supporting and educating chapters on developing district financial resources and in the use of good financial practices. Administering district charitable and community service initiatives and supporting and educating chapters in their charitable efforts. Creating, administering, and coordinating district organizational structures and processes to accomplish the District s goals.

VOCAL EXPRESSIONS PAGE 29 DEC 2008 En-Hansen Hansen-ments Visual opportunities to support good vocal production in warm ups By Cindy Hansen-Ellis One of the long time items of discussion in the barbershop world has been, If we are a singing organization then why do we have to do choreography? We ve all heard that question, right? Well, depending on who is in the room when the question is asked will determine the direction and opinions that will be expressed. I have been lucky enough to work with some of the most talented director/musicians in the society. These individuals while committed to preserving the true sense of the barbershop style also continue to entertain the audience. They have learned that when you teach chorus members to move correctly it can enhance the sound. Moves enhance the singing? That can t be true can it? Well, yes it can I would like to share with you some of the techniques I have used to move the singing level up while working the visuals with a chorus. These are some simple basic things that every chorus can do. Just to prove it works try these simple visual techniques for yourself next week at rehearsal. Stance: Regular Chorus Position (RCP) You ve seen those choruses that look bigger than life. Looks like they are ready to jump off the risers into your lap. They have clean spacing and every angle of each body looks like it has been positioned individually. It s simple each chorus member can look like they have a medal hanging on their chest. The chorus members should stand with their outside foot pointed directly at the director. The toes of that outside foot should hang over the edge of the riser (helps spacing for the back row gentleman). The body should have the chest (sternum) also pointed directly at the director. Then the inside foot should be positioned about shoulder width apart about in the middle of the riser. With the toe pointed at about a 45 degree angle from the outside or front foot. Then the body energy and body weight should be in the chest and not in the feet. I use the term lifted -this helps keep the pitch up, while making the chorus look tall, proud, and electric. This is just another way to say, stand tall but with more power and commitment. Hands should hang free and loose at the side of the body. Shoulders should give the statement of being proud to stand on the risers with this group of individuals. Layering: a technique to practice different parts of a visual plan during Vocal Warm Ups. Once a director has the sound (vowel matching, chord balance, tuning, etc.) they want, start to add parts of the four step visual plan. Add a Dynamic Level determine what level of sound we should be making. You can use the standard level from 1-10 or be more creative and use words like, soft, velvet or crush. I believe dynamics drive all of the visual plan and levels. That is why I start with a dynamic level. Add an emotion to sell with their face. Some great emotions I love to use are: genuine, spectacular, restful, famous, honored, alluring, electrifying and bold. That way, we make them think about how to sell different than they have in the past. Emotions like happy, sad, lost, etc. are fine to use, but try to make the chorus think different. Add a body energy word. This is used to get each and every individual physically involved in the song. Emotions and body energy need to be intertwined into each other. They are different but you need to do one with the other for the most success. Some of the words I use are gentle, majestic, military, strong and vibrant. The emotions, body energy, and dynamics can be in any combination. You will be most successful in your warm ups if you pick sections of your current repertoire and apply those emotions and dynamic to the layering process. Example: Let s sing an Ohh warm up, with a dynamic of a three, emotion of tenderness, and body energy of warm as if we were singing the beginning of my wild Irish rose, the sweetest flower that grows. Lifted from the high notes Longmont, Gil Norris, editor Now add some simple movements. A sway or small chorus spread that matched the warm up. This continues to make the chorus learn that we would never ask them to stand totally still and rigid in a performance unless we are looking for an effect. You can also allow freelance time, so each individual can get use to moving on their own before you do a planned move. The layering technique is a way to ease in simple moves that you would like to teach or add to current songs as well. Once you have the move learned then you can place them in the song or phrase and maintain the musical level. You can use this warm up time to teach new moves, then add it to a song later. The payoff When you do vocal warm ups and choose not to ask the chorus to do these four steps of visual layering, you are getting the chorus to sing in a way that is different than you will ask them to perform. As a director, I think most of you would like to work with or fix the sound that is made while the chorus is active visually in the song. To be the most successful with a visual plan and maintain musical excellence, you need to give your chorus opportunities as often as you can for them to learn to be expressive, combine their abilities, and start performing above the standard. It is simple to add these steps to the current warm-ups where they don t have to think as much about words and notes. Most chorus individuals can do warm ups with little effort. Once again, during the first run through of the warm-up, get the vocal level where you expect the chorus to be, then begin the layering technique. For the layering process to be the most successful, the chorus needs to believe that what you are asking them to do is valid and that you are committed to its success. This is more likely to happen if your comments are specific, positive and direct. Link the process to the improvement of the chorus and establish a common goal that you both want to reach. Adding any new process to your chorus celebrates the kind of excellence exemplified by directors like yourselves. These technique contains skills and opportunities that can change the way a chorus member sees himself as a performer, the way the chorus improves its work ethics, and a way to be more successful in enjoying our music as well as entertaining our audiences. I guarantee you will not see or hear the same old stuff.

All entrants must be members of PROBE (a reasonable chapter expense see application on the PROBE website) for both the year being judged and the year in which they are judged, i.e. both 2008 and Metropolis Retires Comedy Quartet Hangs Up the Slapstick In the spirit of our truly International annual convention, it is with hope for the future and affection for our good fortune in the past that Metropolis announces our swan song performance. Our final bow will take place on the World Harmony Jamboree during the International Convention in Anaheim July of We ve been so blessed by the International community that we felt this would be the most appropriate place for us to say good-bye. Over the past 12 years, Metropolis has endeavored to bring as much fun as possible to our appearances and to the reputation of our hobby in general. Our goal, from the beginning, was to have the best time possible, singing at the highest level possible and entertaining audiences everywhere we could, as often as we could. We d also like to send special thanks to our substitute tenor Royce Ferguson, as well as our very first tenor, Ken Potter and our dear friends Rob Menaker, Jeff Baker and Brett Littlefield, who have always been ready to assist us in whatever manner we ve needed. Rob and Pat Menaker, in particular, for opening their home to us so often without hesitation, so we d have another place to rehearse every other week. Metropolis wouldn t be what it is without our former baritone, Mike McGee and we d be remiss if we didn t recognize our MetrophyWives, Doreen, Naomi, Tamar & Mandy, MetroTeen Becky and MetroTots Jennifer, Sydney, Lindsay and Isabelle - we couldn t have done it without their support (and permission)! We hope to see all of our friends at the World Harmony Jamboree to see us off - our love to you all! Brian Philbin, Bob Hartley, James Sabina and Kelly Shepard
