2 Preace ( ) was a violinist, violist, and comoser rom Vienna. For many years he layed second violin and viola with the amed Hellmesberger Quartet, the leading quartet in Vienna during the middle o the nineteenth century. Durst s comositions include solo and concertante works or the violin, string quartets, and orchestral music. The edition or this short iece is based on a manuscrit housed in the Richard Stoelzer ( ) Collection in the Adelhi University Archives and Secial Collections, (Garden City, New York). Originally rom Germany, Stoelzer sent the maority o his career laying viola and viola d amore in the United States. The manuscrit, which includes a score and arts or our violas, is in Stoelzer s hand. Given the unusual instrumentation, the idiomatic treatment o the viola ensemble, and the relative obscurity o Durst as a comoser, it is robable that this is an original work rather than an arrangement by Stoelzer, though the circumstances o its comosition are unknown Revised Edition Note David M. ynog, editor February 2010 The 2009 edition and 2015 rerinting reroduced m. 13 as it aears in the manuscrit.
