1 Syllabus for PED 442 and GPED 642 Secondary Music Methods and Evaluation 2.0 Credit Hours Fall 1999 The mission of the School of Education is to provide the opportunity for individuals who hold Christian principles to participate in advanced study in preparation for professional public and private responsibilities in the field of education throughout the world. I. COURSE DESCRIPTION A. Secondary Music Methods teaches strategies that apply specifically to music and methods and materials used to implement those strategies with middle and high school curriculum. Both performance and nonperformance classes will be discussed. B. Strong emphasis is placed on observing these classes and rehearsals in the public schools, with a minimum of eight clock hours required. C. Music majors are strongly urged to join the ORU chapter of Collegiate Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and to attend both local and state meetings. II. COURSE GOALS This course is designed to prepare Music Education majors as music specialists for secondary schools and fulfill licensure requirements of the State of Oklahoma. III. COURSE OBJECTIVES A. Terminal Objectives The Teacher Preparation Program meets the competency-based requirements established by the Oklahoma Commission on Teacher Preparation. This course meets General Competency # 8 and Subject Competencies Instrumental/and Vocal/ General # 1/1, 2/2, 3/10, 4/3, -/5, 8/11, 9/7, 10/8, 11/-, -/13, 19/20, and 20/ General Competency GC8. The teacher understands and uses a variety of assessment strategies to evaluate and modify the teaching/learning process ensuring the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learner. 2. Subject Competencies Instrumental/ and Vocal/General SC1/1. Understands the basic philosophy of music education and is able to SC2/2. justify music within the school curriculum. Understands how music and fine arts experiences enhance student life experience and can promote music and the other arts in the community as well as within the school (including group motivational strategies and group management methods.) SC3/10. Participates in ongoing professional development which includes involvement with professional associations and current experiences in performing endeavors. SC4/3. Has knowledge of effective methodologies and practices for encouraging self-analysis and musical independence. 1
2 SC-/5. Has a knowledge of quality literature (collection of written music), both choral and solo, as well as folk songs appropriate for children. SC8/11. Has the ability to recognize and evaluate sequential musical development for all students, including those with disabilities. SC9/7. Has knowledge of where to locate professional consultants and printed music resources, such as music stores, music publisher catalogues, and textbook companies. SC10/8. Has a working knowledge of how music integrates and/or coordinates with all other academic disciplines, including other fine arts areas. SC11/-. Has the skill to collaborate experiences with teachers of other SC-/13. academic disciplines, including other fine arts areas. Is able to prepare a series of lesson plans appropriate to each teaching level K-12. SC19/20. Understands basic laws of copyright pertaining to the correct use of copyrighted printed music and related responsibilities. SC20/21. Understands the competencies in Oklahoma s core curriculum in General Music and exhibits the skill to incorporate them into various instrumental and in various vocal music classes. 3. Other courses where these competencies are being met are as follows: B. Unit Objectives Ensembles, Collegiate Music Educators National Conference (CMENC) (#2/2); Applied Music, CMENC (#3/10); Choral Conducting II, Applied Voice, Choral Ensembles (#-/5; Vocal and Instrumental Ped & Rep., Minor Instru. (#9/7); Same Competency as General Competency #14 (#20/21). As a result of successfully completing this class, the teacher candidate will be able to do the following: 1. relate standards of excellence in the secondary general music classroom. (Gen. #8) 2. describe how to promote self-evaluation among the students (Gen. #8) 3. discuss how to promote positive student evaluation of the group. (Gen. #8) 4. evaluate standardized tests appropriate for music at the elementary level. (Gen. #8) 5. discuss proper interpretation of standardized test information and results, all relating to the secondary music classroom and/or instrumental, vocal ensembles. (Gen. #8) 6. construct reliable and valid tests to assess different student variables.(gen. #8) 7. discuss how to test students about music seen and heard. (Gen. #8) 8. assess music reading ability for individuals and groups. (Gen. #8) 9. describe how to test mastery of the music presently rehearsed. (Gen. #8) 10. develop a basic, personal philosophy of music education for public and private secondary schools. (Subj. Comp. 1/1) 11. develop concepts, procedures and resources for justifying music education in the school curriculum. (Subj. Comp. 1/1) 12. describe how to integrate the fine arts experience into student life. (Subj. Comp. 2/2) 13. discuss how to promote the arts within the school and the community. (Subj. (Subj. Comp. 10/8) 21. summarize how to draw relationships among various art forms through understanding characteristics they share. (Subj. Comp. 10/8) 22. discuss the value of collaborating with other academic disciplines, including the fine arts, within the secondary educational level. (Subj. Comp. #11/-) 23. summarize the value, structure, and purpose of lesson plans for teaching secondary vocal and general music classes. (Subj. Comp. -/13) 24. relate how copyright information, particularly relevant to music and musicians can be obtained from professional organizations. (Subj. Comp. 19/20) 25. list basic copyright facts. (Subj. Comp. 19/20) 26. identify and integrate into music curriculum the Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS) for the secondary level. (Subj. Comp. 20/21) C. 5 C. University Policies 1. Attendance at each class or laboratory is mandatory at Oral Roberts University. B. Double cuts will be assessed for absences immediately preceding or following holidays and/or breaks. C.
