2 MUSIC OF DESTINY Stephen Alltop, Music Director and Conductor Dear Friends, As the Champaign-Urbana Welcome to the season of the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra, Music of Destiny. From Vivaldi to Verdi, Mozart to Mahler, this will be a year of unparalleled musical drama and exultation. Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 58th season, Maestro Stephen Alltop and CUSO present Music of Destiny, performing masterworks from Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Mahler, Vivaldi, Verdi and others, along with exciting new works from CUSO Music Alive Composer-In-Residence Stacy Garrop. Our season begins with the dramatic and moving Requiem of Giuseppe Verdi. How pleased we are to once again collaborate with Dr. Andrew Megill and the University of Illinois Oratorio Society, who will join their voices with four outstanding soloists in this remarkable and awe-inspiring work. Our December holiday concert, Music of the Season, will feature the superb Central Illinois Children s Chorus, soprano Josefien Stoppelenburg, and mezzo-soprano Kate Tombaugh in a wide variety of musical styles and surround-sound delights! In February, we invite you to beat the winter blues with Baroque Brilliance. Zachary Carrettin, violinist and Music Director of the Boulder Bach Festival, will be the soloist in Vivaldi s Four Seasons, one of the most imaginative and depictive masterpieces of the Baroque era. Handel s Concerto Grosso from Alexander s Feast and Bach s First Orchestral Suite will showcase the skills of numerous orchestral principals. The March concert will celebrate new music by CUSO Music Alive Composer in-residence Stacy Garrop, as CUSO performs her colorful and engaging Mythology Symphony, a work in which figures of Greek mythology come alive. We will again welcome virtuoso Stefan Milenkovich in Mendelssohn s incomparable Violin Concerto in e minor. The epic Symphony No. 5 of Beethoven will bring this exciting evening to a rousing conclusion! In the CUSO season finale, our exploration of the symphonies of Gustav Mahler continues with the Symphony No. 1, known as the Titan. This large and heroic work will allow all parts of the orchestra to shine. CUSO will perform Stacy Garrop s Becoming Medusa. a fascinating movement from the Mythology Symphony. We are also pleased to introduce the phenomenally talented pianist, Sun Chang, in Mozart s Piano Concerto No. 14 in E-flat. 3 VERDI S REQUIEM University of Illinois Oratorio Society, Andrew Megill, Conductor CUSO and the Oratorio Society come together to perform one of the most moving and memorable works of the choral repertoire, Giuseppe Verdi s Requiem. From the sublime beauty of soaring solo voices to the awe-inspiring power of the full orchestra and chorus, Verdi masterfully uses all of the vocal and instrumental forces at his command. 4 cuso music alive composer-in-residence stacy garrop Stacy Garrop is the Music Alive Composerin-Residence with the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra. The residency of Stacy Garrop is made possible through Music Alive, a residency program of the League of American Orchestras and New Music USA that demonstrates the power and value of living composers working at the center of American orchestras. The sharing of stories is a defining element of our humanity. My music shares stories by taking audiences on sonic journeys some are simple and beautiful, while others are complicated and dark. -- STACY GARROP Stacy Garrop and Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra are one of five composer and orchestra pairs selected to participate in Music Alive, which include: baroque brilliance Zachary Carrettin, violin CUSO presents stellar works by three giants of the era. Handel s Concerto Grosso from Alexander s Feast and Bach s Orchestral Suite No. 1 feature dazzling solos by outstanding CUSO principals. Violinist Zachary Carrettin, a Baroque specialist and Music Director of the Boulder Bach Festival, returns to Champaign to perform as featured artist for Vivaldi s Four Seasons. Major funding for Music Alive comes from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additional support from The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, The Amphion Foundation, The ASCAP Foundation Bart Howard Fund, the Francis Goelet Charitable Lead Trusts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. CUSO is pleased to perform several new works of Stacy Garrop this season. Stacy s music is centered on dramatic and lyrical storytelling. She has composed works for orchestra, wind ensemble, choir, chamber ensembles, and oratorio. She has also devoted much of her career to music education and taught composition at Roosevelt University in Chicago from 2000 until Stacy earned degrees in music composition at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (BM), University of Chicago (MA), and Indiana UniversityBloomington (DM). Our Music Alive Composer-in-Residence Stacy Garrop will introduce three compelling portraits from her Mythology Symphony. CUSO s exploration of Gustav Mahler s music continues with the autobiographical Symphony No. 1. This spectacular work, scored for a huge orchestra, draws upon a vast array of musical influences in Mahler s life, from children s songs to military marches. Mendelssohn s Violin Concerto is perhaps the most perfect ever composed. CUSO will be joined by Stefan Milenkovich, one of the greatest violinists of his generation. The evening concludes with Beethoven s Fifth Symphony, which is always thrilling to hear in live performance. GARROP: Mythology Symphony III. The Lovely Sirens IV. The Fates of Man V. Pandora Undone Contrasting Mahler s titanic opus will be Garrop s Becoming Medusa, a fascinating movement that traces the progression of this frightening mythological figure from gorgeous to Gorgon.
