19 A fe ords about (and by) the comoser Stan Grill as raised in the ronx, studied at the ronx House School of Music, and later graduated from the Manhattan School of Music ith undergrad and graduate degrees in music theory. He studied iano ith Robert Hels and Leon Kushner and comosition ith Ursula Mamlok and Joseh Prostakoff. Maor orks include music for string orchestra and voice, string orchestra and clarinet, a nonet for inds and strings, and several song cycles for mixed voices and chamber ensemble. Performances have been roduced by the comoser, as ell as resented by the Comosers Guild of Ne Jersey, the St. Paul s Church Festival of the Arts, the Leonia Chamber Players, the Ne York Comosers Circle, the Northern Ne Jersey Camerata, the ronx Arts Ensemble and the Duo + Ensemble. During the seasons, he as comoser in residence of One World Symhony, a Ne York City based orchestra. One World Symhony has remiered several maor orks, including Invisible allet for orchestra, To Sad Songs setting oems by W.. Yeats for sorano string orchestra, and a cycle of songs for to cellos and to mezzo soranos setting oems by the Ne Jersey oet William Carlos Williams. In 2006, One World commissioned three orks a setting of the Ohelia songs from Shakeseare s Hamlet for sorano, har and string orchestra, an orchestral ork, "Pluto," for a rogram featuring Holst s The Planets, and a setting of oetry for a concert honoring those ho lost their lives on 9/11. Recent orks include "The Four Elements" for viola and string orchestra commissioned by violist rett Deubner and "Mystical Songs" for sorano, viola and string orchestra commissioned by the Universidad Tecnica Particular de Loa. In 2009, an entire rogram of music by Stan Grill as erformed in Tokyo by the Duo + Ensemble. He currently orks in Philadelia, and lives haily in Ne Jersey ith his ife, cats and iano. As I see it, as much as e strive to find reason and urose in our having been born into this amazing, mysterious and ae-insiring universe, that attemt is largely futile. It is hoever, the best art of our nature that obliges us to make the attemt, though the most e can hoe for is to gain some small degree of understanding of the orld around us, and, more imortantly, of ourselves. To achieve this, e each aroach the roblem in our on ay, uniquely shaed by our cultural background, innate talents and abilities, education and so on. For some, science may be the indo through hich they best erceive and interret the orld, for others, religion. For those to hom the orld seems to exress itself most clearly and beautifully through sound, music is the voice that seaks to us and through hich e, in turn, best exress ourselves. No, I can rite notes that ill make retty music because I ve been trained to do so but the best of my music has arrived, rather inexlicably, as art of a ersonal effort to understand the orld and myself. It is, in a ay, an act of translation. The orld says something, I try to understand it, and then translate it into musical language. The articular musical language hich I seak, is, of course, a roduct of my conservatory training and ersonal musical tastes, but hoefully, the outcome, imerfect a translation as it may be, ill convey to others something of its original intent. Stan's music is melodic, modal, contrauntal, characterized by extended, intereaving lines. His musical influences san the centuries, and include Machaut, Josquin, Palestrina, Monteverdi, Lassus, ritten, Ives, ughn Williams and Shostakovich. To main themes ermeate many of the ieces - music intended to influence the minds and hearts of those ho hear it in such a ay as to encourage thoughts about the ossibility of orld eace - and music comosed in an attemt to translate something about the nature of the hysical orld.
