New Policy at the Minstrel The Folk Project has finally received approval of our long awaited liquor license. Starting with our April 1 performance, attendees can choose from a fine selection of wines, beers, and cocktails, at very reasonable prices. Look ahead to more amenities at our performances: massages, liposuction, tarot readings, and a miniature house which, when you enter, will turn you into a tiny monkey wearing a pink tutu. Is it Rick s birthday already? If so, it s time to return to 12 Upper Warren Way, Warren for our monthly musical extravaganza. Rumor has it Rick and Cathy are moving to the left coast soon, so let s send them off with a bang! Bring munchies/bev, voices, instruments and songs. 2 The Minstrel April 2011 Acoustic Concert Series presented by 4/1: April Fools Night at the Minstrel Like our Valentines Day Extravaganza and our Birthday Show, this April Fools Night will be an opportunity for our member musicians to shine. There ll be funny songs, skits, pranks, and games, and who knows what else. When you put the brilliant but twisted mind of producer Andy Koenig to work on a night like this, there s no predicting what will emerge. But here are some advanced leaks: There will be a Maim That Tune segment of songs performed in ways that were never intended. And those who have attended the Folk Project Festival will be delighted to hear that there will be a Themes In A Hat segment. (Don t ask. Just come and find out.) Lots of audience participation. Fri., 4/8: Open Stage Open Stage is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. Fri., 4/15: the Kennedys and Mark Conklin For more than 15 years, The Kennedys have been rocking the folk world with their unique brand of high-energy performance. It s more than the powerful close-harmony singing. It s more than the hot guitar work. It s more than the driving rhythms and power chords. It s the obvious chemistry between Pete and Maura Kennedy that is so charming and so contagious that the listener can t help but grin and join in their fun. Opener Mark Conklin knows how to write a good song. And how to put it across. His lyrics are sharp, ironic, and to the point. And with backup vocalist Jenn Curtis and keyboardist Arne Wendt, he can rock out with the best of them. A perfect match for the Kennedys. Fri., 4/22: Butch Ross and Luke Liddy with Tom Delaney When Butch Ross opened for Bill Staines last fall, he received a rare accolade: a standing ovation for an opening act. Now with a headline slot of his own, we ll get to see more of his work. He transforms the lowly mountain dulcimer into a virtuoso s instrument, drawing from it unexpected power and expressiveness. He mixes old country and Appalachian songs with his own wordy, literate, poetic ballads about people, places, and situations you might read about in a good book of short stories. He has a strong clear voice and a stage presence of boyish charm. From openers Luke Liddy with Tom Delaney, expect to hear Luke s thoughtfully crafted songs featuring some from his new album, Back Door Rain. You ll also hear some original fingerstyle acoustic guitar numbers and some expert picking from Tom Delaney on mandolin and guitar. Fri., 4/29: Elixir and an Introduction to Contra Dancing Most contra dance bands use some variant of the traditional fiddle, bass, keyboard, guitar string-band instrumentation. But Elixir beefs that up with vocals and a horn section, opening a whole new palette of sound and texture. So in addition to the string band repertoire they also add swing tunes and songs. Great energy. Elixir will also be the band for the Folk Project s Swingin Tern contra dance the following night, April 30. You ve seen numerous references to contra dancing on our website. Tonight you get to see it and try it. Instead of presenting an opening act, we will hold a short session of contra dancing at the Minstrel. Elixir will play and teach. And we will recruit a number of experienced regulars from the Folk Project s regular Swingin Tern dance to demonstrate, and then serve as experienced partners to any who would like to try it. The dancing employs figures similar to square dancing, but with a very different feel to the dance. It s easy to learn; if you can walk to the music, you can contra dance. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $7.00 on your way in, and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children under 12 are free. Elizabeth Lachowicz thankfully reports that her sister Susie has been recovering nicely from the illness that had her in intensive care over the Christmas holidays. Susie is feeling better and preparing to return to work. Elizabeth thanks everyone in our FP community for their support and get well wishes. Rick and Cathy Thomas are joyfully awaiting their daughter Suzanna s upcoming visit. Suzanna will be spending a week with them, re-experiencing NJ s cold weather and traveling to upstate NY with Rick to visit her grandfather. Nancy Kelner had a great time last month, meeting several FP members while listening to Carolyn Messina perform at the Brewed Awakening Coffeehouse in Metuchen. Nancy said, There were several performers that night, but Carolyn was far and away the best of the four! Pat Brangs had a great time at the Café Zed last month. Pat enjoyed seeing her friends Jim West, Judy Bubar and Eddie Roffman perform at the open stage; she noted that it felt great being there with so many FP friends performing and in the audience. While at the airport on the way to a fly-in gig in Alabama last month, Mike Agranoff had to give his guitar to a TSA employee for baggage screening. The screener said, That s a Martin, right? When Mike asked how he knew, the screener said that he recognized the bracing pattern in the x-ray! Mike enjoyed his performance, and afterwards got to play music and swing-dance with Auburn U students at a local donut shop. About eight months ago, Carl Croce bought an old Harmony triple-o sized guitar for a great price on Ebay. He took it to have its neck reset and some other repairs and waited about 6 months until the work was finished. Carl said, It was worth the wait. It is now something else! FP members who might want to share a house rental on Long Beach Island for a week this summer (July 30-August 5) contact Eddie Roffman (president@folkproject.org). Each bedroom will cost about $ for a week. Pat Brangs and Eddie and Robin Roffman invite FP members to join us for the Thursday Evening Previews of the NJ Shakespeare Theatre in Madison. 5 Folk Project Board Meeting March Board Meeting: The Summary The March Meeting of the Folk Project was called to order at 8:04 on a very chilly March 1st, at the New Providence home of Pam Robinson and Bob Safranek. Present were Gloria Friedman, Jim Gartner, Carolyn Messina, Brad Pryor, Bobbie Rosengarten and Ed Roffman (Trustees), Mike Agranoff, Pat Brangs, Carl Croce, Scooter Ferguson, Nancy Kelner, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Chris Riemer, Pam Robinson, Bob Safranek, Rachel Streich and Rick Thomas (Other Board Members) and Jim King (Guest). Absent were Connie Crawford, Lois DeRitter, Allan Kugel, Sandie Reilly, Robin Schaffer, Jean Scully and Ruth Wolfish. The February minutes were approved with two minor corrections, and the Treasurer assured us that the Folk Project was still a going concern, cash wise. March is the month in which the President updates the Folk Project s record in GuideStar, the online database of non-profit organizations. GuideStar gets its primary feed from the 990 forms we file with the IRS, but we can add additional information about our programs, organization and objectives. Otherwise, among other things, we learned the following about the standing committees: Community Services chair Pat Brangs told us that Wayne Day will be much simpler this year, since they re going for a single stage and five acts, of which we ll supply four. Wayne Day starts at 11:00 AM, with the music running from 12:00 to 5:00. There was a big uptick in membership in response to Rick s electronic outreach, bringing some 60 odd people back to the fold. Those whose memberships expired more recently appear more likely to re-up than those whose memberships lapsed in 2008 or While wearing his Festival hat, Carl Croce is continuing to make progress in his discussions with Star Lake. He s planning a major promotion to the dance community, with the goal of bringing 100 new dancers to our Festival this fall. Still at the planning stage, though, and he ll keep us posted. Switching to his newsletter hat, Carl apologized for some process issues and hopes that delivery will be more timely in the future. Minstrel Book chair Mike Agranoff described February as an ordinary month, which means the Minstrel is back in the black. He s pretty much booked through the end of the year, having added the Frank Vignola Trio for next October. Pam Robinson let us know that Za Zu Zaz tickets are selling slowly and the press is out on Craig Ruch. She is also considering an promotion to the general membership on behalf of special events. Publicity chair Nancy Kelner is sorry to report that we apparently had no takers on the free admission deal we advertised in The Hometown Quarterly several months ago.
