We ae about 90% complete on the emodel of you Union Hall. We ve painted the building inside and out, eplaced all the flooing and made the font office and callboad moe egonomically fiendly fo the staff. We mached fom McAthu Pak to City Hall with thousands of wokes fom evey Union in Los Angeles. We also held ou annual Ralph Claie Golf Tounament and affle fo ou Membes who eally had a geat time on the couse. We held ou thid annual ca & motocycle show at the Los Angeles Tade-Technical College on June 24, LA Tade Tech suppots the labo movement by putting on many labo studies classes and educating thei students in labo issues. It was a tuly geat event! We had pictue cas fom majo movies as well as food, music, a bee gaden, pet adoptions and moe! We also had many Membe s cas & motocycles on display fo judging. I d like to thank Captain Jack Fishe fo ceating this event. I d like to give special thanks to ou Membe, Woody Wood and his wife Donna, fo thei help and Amy Goton, Coutney Bignoni and Enie Baaza fo making the event so successful. I d also like to thank JC 42, othe Teamste Locals, the Basic Cafts and eveyone who paticipated fo suppoting this geat event fo all ou Membes. We had a geat Union meeting in July. Mayo Eic Gacetti came to speak to the Membeship about expanding and inceasing ou tax incentives. His poposal is to incease the cedit to $500 million dollas up fom the cuent $330 million today. Local 399 has committed to spend up to $75, to lobby fo the expansion of the tax cedit beginning next yea along with the coalition of Entetainment Industy Unions which include the IATSE, DGA and SAG-AFTRA. Mayo Gacetti also pomised to do eveything he can to stop National Right to Wok legislation fom eve becoming the law. I also had a meeting with Congessman Adam Schiff along with ou JC Pesident Randy Cammack and IBT Vice-Pesident Rick Middleton. Congessman Schiff also pledged to do eveything he can to stop RTW legislation fom becoming law. He s also incedibly suppotive of expanding ou film industy tax cedit. Meetings like these with poweful elected officials ae impotant to all ou Membes and we continue to lobby to bette not only ou industy-but the labo movement as a whole. I d like to discuss a sensitive issue, politics. Obviously, we have Membes who suppot both the Republican and Democatic paties. Unfotunately, the discouse in ou geat county has gotten so toxic and divisive-with both sides becoming moe entenched in thei own points of view. What I believe needs to happen now moe than eve, is fo both sides to come togethe on the issues that bind us all togethe. This bings me to this geat oganization, the Teamstes. We e all pat of the labo movement and I believe that we must not allow paty diffeences fom getting in the way of what benefits us all as Teamstes. My only inteest in eveything I do hee is what benefits us all as a goup. I will suppot candidates fom eithe paty who ae inteested in helping us achieve what mattes most to ou families. Issues like pension potection, quality affodable health cae and stopping National Right to Wok legislation dead in its tacks. I d like you to know that when we post infomation about these and so many othe issues, ou focus is on what diectly impacts and benefits you, ou Membeship. I m cetain that we must stick togethe and put ou diffeences aside and wok togethe whee we can-to push the labo movement fowad fo bette wages, woking conditions and benefits. 2 TEAMSTER JOINT COUNCIL 7 RELEVANT INDUSTRY ARTICLES FROM TOP ENTERTAINMENT SOURCES 3 BIG BUDGET FEATURES JOIN CALIFORNIA S FILM & TV TAX CREDIT PROGRAM REPORTED BY THE CALIFORNIA FILM COMMISSION Half of the Pojects in the Latest Allocation Round Plan Filming Outside Los Angeles Poduction Zone Hollywood Califonia July 24th The latest ound of featue films added to Califonia s Film and Television Tax Cedit Pogam 2.0 demonstate the state s pogess in attacting big-budget pojects and ceating jobs statewide. T hee big-budget films - Captain Mavel, Island Plaza and Midway, -- have been selected as pat of the latest ound of tax cedits, which allocates nealy $68 million to eight independent and studio pojects. A total of 92 pojects applied fo tax cedits duing the fist film allocation peiod (held June 27 July 8) fo fiscal yea-thee of Califonia s expanded Pogam 2.0. Mavel Studios Co-Pesident Louis D Esposito stated, Ou headquates and postpoduction facilities ae in Califonia, so it s vey exciting to be able to film Captain Mavel hee in ou home state thanks to this Califonia tax cedit. As a esult, not only will we be able to steamline ou poduction pocess fo this and othe films we e woking on concuently, but we ll have moe time to spend with ou families. Captain Mavel and the othe big-budget studio pojects have poduction budgets in excess of $75 million, which would have made them ineligible fo the state s fist-geneation tax cedit pogam. With the thee we ve added today, a total of six big-budget films have been lued to Califonia thanks to Pogam 2.0, said Califonia Film Commis- sion Executive Diecto Amy Lemisch. Such films ae a pimay taget fo the tax cedit pogam because they can bing significant jobs and spending to egions acoss the state. Among the othe pojects selected fo the latest ound of tax cedits ae indies Happytime Mudes diected by Bian Henson and staing Melissa McCathy, and Cheney staing Amy Adams, Chistian Bale and Steve Caell. Based on data povided with each application, the eight film pojects announced today ae on tack to employ moe than 2,600 cast and cew, and geneate PAGE 2 nealy $385 million in qualified spending (defined as wages to below-the-line wokes and payments fo equipment/vendos). Fou of the eight pojects plan to shoot at least patially outside the Los Angeles 30Mile Zone (as fa away as nothen Califonia). Poduction companies ae ediscoveing the divese locations available acoss the state, added Lemisch. Fo example, Midway plans to film extensively in Alameda County, whee the poduces can take advantage of the Bay Aea s unique locations, poduction infastuctue and skilled cews. We ae deeply toubled by the tagedy that took place on June 14th in San Fancisco that claimed the lives of 4 Teamste Local 2785 Membes. At a moning meeting of Package Ca Dives, a fellow Dive bust in and fatally shot longtime Teamstes Local 2785 Membes Wayne Chan, Michael Lefiti and Benson Louie befoe shooting himself. We offe ou deepest condolences to all who ae huting fom this awful and senseless act. Below is a statement fom Teamstes Joint Council 7 in egads to the tagedy and a way that we can help ease the financial buden fo the families and loved ones left behind. We ae all left stunned by this senseless act and especially saddened by the fact that Wayne leaves behind his wife Tina, son Kyle and daughte Kiaa; Mike was husband to Danielle and fathe to daughte Mecedes and sons Jeemiah and Malachi; Benson s wife is Sandy and his daughtes Elizabeth and Melony. All ae in need of comfot and suppot afte thei husband and fathe wee so butally taken fom them. 3 On June 24th we hosted ou 3d Annual Classic Ca and Motocycle Show this yea at the Los Angeles Tade Technical College. The past two yeas the event had been hosted in the Valley at Reseda and Woodley Paks. The decision to change locations this yea was twofold: we wanted to povide a moe suitable facility fo ou show cas and motocycles to pak on, and we wanted to engage and invite moe Unions and Locals to paticipate along with the students and faculty of LATTC. We wee excited to expand the event this yea to include Movie Cas such as the Geoge Clooney Batmobile, Fast & the Fuious and Tansfomes Cas. We also had an impessive display of cas fom Pictue Ca Waehouse. As this event continues to gow we hope to continue to epesent both ou Entetainment Industy and the Labo Movement at lage. Thank You... Diana Reyes The Teamste Union means a lot to me and my family, it has been ou suppot system fo my Fathe though the development of his caee. Fom a young age I ealized that I was vey blessed being able to be pat of the Teamste family. It has given me geat oppotunities that I wouldn t have had without the Teamste Union. Paent: Membe Luis Reyes Pake Geoge The Teamstes Union has been vey suppotive fo my family since my fathe is a Membe and has povided a second family to me. My Fathe s best fiends ae all Membes of the Union, so they have all been in my life as ole models and suppotive people. Teamstes educe unemployment, which is not only good fo wokes, i.e. my Fathe, but also good fo Businesses and the economy as well. My dad s ability to wok thoughout the yea diectly impacts my ability to attend the school of my choice. Apil Ball The Union not only helps my Fathe find wok but ensues that he eans a living wage to suppot my family and enable me to each my college goals. As a Union Membe, my Fathe also sets a geat example. He is a highly pofessional and seious about wok, investing in skills development and taining and giving his all. That attitude and suppot has helped me to achieve in and out of school. Paent: Membe Geoge Ball Lucinda Hischfeld Befoe Teamstes Local 399 epesented Casting Diectos in Hollywood, my Dad had no health insuance, no job secuity, and no pension and etiement benefits in an industy un by lage poweful copoations diven by pofits and not the well-being of thei employees. The Teamstes Union poves that thee is stength in numbes and gives the individual Membes a collective voice that they would not have at the bagaining table by epesenting thei mutual inteests. The Union has given ou household a sense of stability and financial secuity by establishing pension funds fo my paents etiement and poviding health insuance fo me, my mothe and my disabled bothe. I am gateful fo the Teamstes leadeship and sevice. Paent: Membe Mac Hischfeld Gianna Potte The Teamstes Union is a family thing. My Gandfathe, Hal Lay, was the fist to be pat of Local 399. My Fathe Gay Potte was next, followed by my Mothe, Lisa Potte. I also have two uncles in the Union. The Union was pat of my Mom s life gowing up, as well as my siblings and mine. Without the Teamstes Union, I have no idea what ou lives would look like. Without it, my single Fathe wouldn t be able to suppot his little gil. The Teamste Union has povided a oof ove my head and food on the table fo me and my family fo seveal yeas. My Mothe is the main povide in my household, and as a 399 Dispatche she has made the most impact in my ability to do what I enjoy which is leaning and following my passion in socce. Though the Teamstes Union my Fathe has a stable and good paying job that has suppoted the family well ove the yeas, and because of that suppot I have had the oppotunity to tavel to Euope fo an educational expeience that will follow me though life. I was able to tavel to Washington D.C. and New Yok. Now, I have the oppotunity to go to the college of my choice and hopefully study aboad at some point duing my college caee. We have healthcae, a easonable standad of living, and the comfot of knowing we belong to a lage oganization of like-minded people. My Fathe enjoys safe woking conditions, pofessional development and good epesentation duing contact negotiations. His Membeship in Teamstes Local 399 has meant long-tem stability fo ou family. Vetean Dive, Local 399 Membe since 1991, Business Agent & Fome Pesident of Local 399 fo the tem, Wes Ponsfod has been a huge asset to ou Local 399 Membeship. He has dedicated his time and enegy to see this Local continue to gow and to ensue ou Membes ae well epesented. As of July 31st, Wes will be stepping down, of his own accod, fom his ole as Business Agent at Local 399 and will etun to diving until he decides to etie. I am not planning to etie yet, but I plan to go back to weaing shots to wok and diving with the est of you. Retiement can wait fo a few moe yeas. Wes Ponsfod commented. When asked about Wes s time as Business Agent he eplied, I do want to take a moment to offe my heatfelt appeciation to the Local 399 Membeship who has stood behind me and to Local 399 Secetay-Teasue Steve Dayan who always had my back and gave me the oppotunity to seve the Membeship as a Business Agent. I also owe a huge amount of thanks and gatitude to all of the othe Business Agents and employees of Local 399. Unde the leadeship of Steve, this Local has made many changes that have impoved the abilities of the Membeship to be head, moe taining to be made available and, most of all, the focus of putting ou Membes to wok. 5 T he Local 399 Executive Boad is made up of a Secetay-Teasue, Pesident, Vice Pesident, Recoding Secetay and 3 Tustees. The Tustees ae tasked with the fiduciay esponsibility of the budgets. They seve as eyes and eas to make sue the Membeship s money is being spent in an open and tanspaent way and in accodance with the Union s goals and ideals. Pio to becoming a Teamste I had been woking at Quixote as a Moto Home Dive on photo shoots fo seveal yeas. The town was petty slow at the time, so thee was no way to tansition to becoming a Union Dive. Then a fiend of mine got Nina - The Nina Simone Stoy, and I was able to wok that and get my 30 days. A lot of my involvement is due to Business Agents Josh Staheli and Lindsay Doughety. When Quixote became a Union shop, we had to have an election to have a Union Stewad. At the time, I had no idea what that meant, but I knew that it would help the guys out and a lot of the othe Dives appoached me and said I should be thei Stewad. So I talked with Josh and Lindsay and they eally pushed and lifted me up to take that on. Then I began to see the bigge pictue and what the Union was all about. I went on to become a Membe of the Teamstes National Black Caucus. The National Black Caucus means a lot to me. We do a lot of wok in inne city communities. We each out and we let young Afican Ameican men and women know about the Teamstes and that thee is anothe way fowad, that thee is a way out and a way to feed thei families by woking had and that is vey impotant to me. I came fom the west side of Chicago and it s one of the moe dangeous places in the city. I was able to somehow cicumvent that and become the man that I am today. When Secetay Teasue Steve Dayan and Vice Pesident Ed Duffy took me to Sacamento to Lobby fo the tax incentives, it showed me a diffeent wold. I began to see we had esponsibilities outside of evey day life on set. I felt we could do good wok, as Teamstes. That was the beginning of me eally wanting to get involved, and move fowad, and help out in any way that I could -- to help the Union and not just locally but nationally. Any small way I could do it, that s how I got involved. Being a Tustee, having access to see the inne wokings of the Union, was vey impotant to me. Being a Tustee is mainly about the budget, and making sue the monies that come into ou Local, the monies that ae spent at ou Local, ae spent popely and justly. That was vey impotant to me, because that s the Membes money. Fo me at this point it s all about making sue the Membes ae taken cae of. That was one of my most impotant easons in becoming a Tustee to be involved in a way that I would feel comfotable making sue ou Membeship was epesented. I ve become moe comfotable in this position. I was a little scaed, to be honest, ealy on. It was my fist time at a meeting like that, especially a financial meeting. But now I am moe comfotable and I know what to expect and how the numbes beak down -- what s being spent and not being spent. I m not a po by any means, but I m beginning to get a geate undestanding of how the intewoking s of the Union opeates. Tustees also vote on any othe boad issues that aise. The Executive Boad is an elected position and the Tustees ae voted on duing Geneal Membeship elections. Each Tustee usually uns fo office on a Slate with all the othe Membes of the Executive Boad. Today we would like to intoduce Calvin McDowell, Gay Zuckebod and Amando Santana as Tustees, and thank them fo thei additional sevice in this official capacity. Because I m a Shop Stewad, I have about 31 guys in my ban. People have begun to ecognize that I am actively involved and esponsible as thei Stewad, so I field a lot of questions with egad to ou contacts and anything else that comes up. It s a geat feeling, because the moe I lean, the moe confident I become in answeing those questions. To be someone that othe Membes can look to, as someone in the know, it makes me feel eally good to be able to help my membes and this Union. That s the numbe one thing fo me, to be of sevice to this Local and to its Membes. I m 51 and it means eveything to me to have a pension and to have good health cae. It has foced me to look at my pesonal finances and make sue they ae in ode -- So that when the time comes, and I m no longe diving, that I will be taken cae of. It was one of the best things fo the Union to come in and epesent us (at Quixote). It is night and day -- having an intenal oste, not being invoiced on jobs and actually eceiving pay checks that put hous into you health cae and pension -- has been night and day. It was the best thing that could have eve happened to a Dive at that company. The job secuity that we have, the ability to negotiate with management when thee is a poblem, thee is no compaison with what it was, vesus what it now means fo us, as Dives, woking fo that company. Ou biggest fight going fowad is to fight Right to Wok and to gow the Teamstes nationally and locally. Also to get back to a point whee thee ae moe Union membes in geneal. We have to fight to gow Union membeship in this county in any capacity. Because I believe the numbe one facto in this county is giving people the oppotunity to have a pension and ean good wages and ight now the only way to guaantee that is though Unions. Gay Zuckebod Casting Diecto - Second tem as Tustee. Gay is the fome pesident of the The Casting Society of Ameica (CSA). He seved thee (non-consecutive) tems as Pesident of the CSA and it was in this capacity that Gay became instumental in the union oganizing effots of the CSA membes. Gay, and a numbe of the othe Casting Diectos, sat down with Steve Dayan and stated talking about the ealities of becoming Teamstes and the ealities of becoming unionized. My fist contact with the Teamstes was Steve Dayan. I met Steve with fellow Casting Diecto Richad Hicks. We spoke the same language mostly because Steve came fom being a Location Manage, and he undestood the ceative difficulties Casting Diectos face. As a Location Manage, sometimes you can t ceate the pefect location so he undestood Casting Diectos go though a simila pocess with Actos. Steve eally took the time to lean about ou pofession. Steve spent a temendous amount of time with Casting Diectos and Casting Associates. Steve explained what we needed to do in ode to oganize. We e a tough goup, we ae autonomous and while many Casting Diectos ae fiends, we e also competitos. It was about a yea long pocess befoe we sought to sign cads with the Teamstes. Once we signed the cads, we stated the pocess of getting ecognition by AMPTP. All in all, it took about 4 yeas befoe we actually sat down at the table. It was an incedible jouney with an amazing Steeing Committee, Magey Simkin, Richad Hicks, David Rubin, Tammy Billik, Nancy Kloppe, Tacy Lillienfield, Laua Adle, Megan McConnell and Janet Gilmoe. I look back at it and think Wow, I have been in Casting fo 35 yeas, and if this had been in existence when I stated, fo myself and many of my colleagues, we would be set fo life with benefits and etiement. Casting Diectos epesent a small pat of the Teamstes, but we e a vey tight goup. Being Union membes is still elatively new to us so the well being of Locals 399 and 817, which epesents the Casting Diectos in NY, is incedibly impotant to us. Local 399 has been a game change fo Casting Diectos and Associates. Being pat of this local has impoved ou lives, in tems of getting healthcae, potections and advancing the pay ate of Casting Associates. I think Steve felt that my expeience oganizing and my time as Pesident of The Casting Society would be useful on the Executive Boad so I assume that s why he asked me to do it. Unions save us fom exploitation by employes, they give us solidaity, and they give us stength. It couldn t be moe impotant to be awae of that especially with the Right to Wok issue that s going on in Congess ight now. It s unimaginable that someone would want to vote against thei own inteests in having these potections. It means a temendous amount to me to be a Tustee. I take it vey seiously It s been an hono woking with my colleagues and helping them wheeve I can. When Steve took ove, we cut a huge amount of extaneous expenses. Just the eimbusement fo autos and gas was astonomical. We ve aleady saved ove $80,000 a yea just in that type of thing alone. This is the Membe s money. If you ask Steve, that s how it woks unde this administation, it s all about the Membes, we e vey cautious on how we use that money. Amando Santana Dive Appointed in Januay What attacted me to becoming a Teamste was the geat medical benefits and the pension, not to mention the good pay my Bothe was eceiving. He was also having all these amazing expeiences while doing his job. My Bothe Mike Santana was the fist of the Teamstes in my family and then my Dad and myself. My uncle Eddie and my nephew Donovan ae also Teamstes. My mothe is a Union Membe that woked fo United Ailines and even my gandpaents wee pat of a Union. I took evey Dive job I could get because I was eage to lean and needed the wok. I was affoded a geat oppotunity when my fiend, Captain Dave West, intoduced me to Coodinato Sam White and I become pat of the family at 20th Centuy Fox. Duing that time I became a Goup 1 and Leo Reed gave me the oppotunity to become a Shop Stewad. I am also a Membe of the Dive Steeing Committee, with a geat goup of fiends who all have the best inteest PAGE 8 PAGE 9 in mind fo all the 399 Dives. I feel honoed to be a Tustee. To be able to epesent othe Dives and to be eyes and eas fo the othe Dives -- to be able to talk to them about the Union s expenses and to be able to convey the concens of othe Dives to the Executive Boad all these things mean eveything to me. I m vey involved in ou Union in a lot of aeas. Calvin, Gay and I all have ou own niches but we all take this vey seiously and see this is an oppotunity to be of sevice to the Membes and whateve Membes intepet that to be. It is nice to be a Membe and to see whee ou money is going. I don t usually see this end of it. It s good to know that we ae doing so well and that we can help othe Unions and othe people in need as a esult of ou stength. I have neve been apat of anything like this befoe and I am still fascinated and intigued by it because it is an oppotunity to help othes in many ways. Being a Tustee was an oppotunity to be of sevice to the Union and help othes and to ty and give back fo all the things it has given me. Not eveyone can go to the meetings and some people want to know moe than othes, but I always ty and make myself available. I m also the Shop Stewad ove at Fox, so a lot of people know me and will come to me. Anyone should be able to come fowad and talk to us and ask questions o voice thei concens. I ve always been that way with anyone I ve woked with. By voicing ou concens and opinions it makes 399 Stong! Stength is impotant in these times because Unions ae unde attack. With a small pecentage of Unions left and Right to Wok out thee, it is extemely impotant to get involved on any level possible. The way I see it, Right to Wok is eally about taking away ou jobs and ou quality of life. It takes away eveything we have fought fo. If it wee to pass, all of us will be in a lot of touble and it s the most impotant thing on the table ight now. A lot of people ae busy out thee woking had. I see it evey day, and it s a gind, so a lot of people don t have time to listen, don t have time to know about it. I m tying to do my pat though wod of mouth. Being pat of 399 has helped me to povide a bette quality of life and given me secuity I neve had befoe.
