6 External Sensing External sensors can be employed for very exact positioning tasks where the repeatability or linearity of the built-in position sensors is not adequate. Channel A: Sensor In order to make measurements and collect position information, an external sensor is guided along a rule (magnetic band) and Channel B: Linear Motor samples distance information in a completely contact-free manner. Because of its sturdiness even in the most difficult environments and its insensitivity to practically all forms of soiling and wear, the magnetic method for measuring distances is superior to conventional methods in many applications. The band is glued onto the machine using a simple adhesive mounting and is mechanically protected by a stainless steel covering band.
