5 Operation Introduction Using the Amplifier The Model Gb/s Limiting Amplifier is designed specifically for use as a low-noise limiting amplifier following low-level output, such as a highspeed photodetector, photoreceiver, or the output of a 40G mux. This amplifier is specified over a 50-kHz-to- 35-GHz small-signal bandwidth and maintains an open eye diagram at speeds up to 43 Gb/s, making it suitable for both time- and frequency-domain applications. The Model 1424 Broadband Amplifier is housed in a compact unit with 2.4-mm input and output connectors. In the standard configuration, a male connector is used on the output of the amplifier to facilitate direct connection to other microwave components or to test instrumentation such as biterror detectors and oscilloscopes. Alternatively, the sex of the connectors may be swapped at the time of the order. 40-Gb/s Limiting Amplifier Operation 5

6 Making the Power Connection DC-power is supplied to the amplifier via a 3-pin connector; this is the same connector presently used on the New Focus Model 0901 Power Supply. Two cables are provided for the power connection: If the Model 1424 is to be used with the Model 0901, use only the cable with circular 3-pin connectors on both ends. If the Model 1424 is to be used with a power supply other than the Model 0901, use the Circular 3-pin-to-banana cable and observe the following precautions: Input voltage is 15 V at 10 ma on the positive (red) banana plug. Input voltage is 15 V at 150 ma on the negative (black) banana plug. The two supplies should share a common ground. This ground should be connected to the green banana plug. 7 Adjusting the Threshold Note: The Model 1424 is a limiting amplifier that will provide a high-level output near 0 V when the input is above the threshold, Vth, and a low level output near 500 mv when the input is below the threshold. The threshold is automatically set to be at the average value of the input waveform. So, for example, if the input signal has a logic high of 50 mv and a logic low of 20 mv, the threshold Vth will be adjusted automatically to equal 15 mv. Depending on the application, however, a different Vth may be desirable. After first taking the appropriate precautions for electrostatic discharge, Vth may be adjusted by inserting a small screwdriver into the opening near the power connector. Carefully engage the screw head of the potentiometer and rotate the screwdriver to increase or decrease the logic threshold. The potentiometer is adjusted at the factory so this adjustment should not be necessary for most applications. Figure 2 shows a block diagram of the threshold adjust circuitry.
