2 SAFETY SUMMARY System Weight and Handling Restrictions - Depending upon the specific system and configuration, each RPTS100 chassis weighs approximately 30 pounds. The RPTS100 is housed in a ruggedized enclosure designed for carrying, handling and operation by one person. Electrical The RPTS100 is designed to operate on 12 VDC battery power as well as 115/230 VAC 50/60 Hz, and complies with all U.S. and International safety codes and regulations required for safe operation and use of commercial equipment. Use standard and accepted safety practices with respect to operating commercial electrical equipment at all times to avoid the risk of personal injury or death. EMI/EMC The RPTS100 complies with all FCC and CE regulations regarding electromagnetic interference and compatibility. There are no personnel hazards or safety issues with respect to EMI/EMC when operating the system. Exposure to Radio Frequency (RF) Signals The RPTS100 is designed to transmit RF signals from 200 MHz to 5250 MHz at levels of +10 dbm to -70 dbm. These signal levels are well below the minimum safe exposure levels prescribed by both U.S. and International standards. There is a high power (+37 dbm) output option available and, when this option is installed all safety practices and procedures in place at the user location applicable to protection from RF signal exposure at these levels must be followed.

6 1 - INTRODUCTION 1.1 Scope This User s Guide provides the necessary information for the operation of SEMCO s RPTS1000 Portable Telemetry Signal Simulator, which is used to test telemetryy receivers and telemetry ground stations by dynamically simulating telemetry signals normally emanatingg from aircraft, missiles and weapon systems during flight test operations. 1.2 Purpose and Description This User s Guide provides detailed information to allow for operation of the RPTS100 Telemetry Signal Simulator (Figure 1-1). Portable Figure 1-1 RPTS1000 Portable Telemetry Signal Simulator Section 2, Getting Started briefly describes and lists the standard and optional hardware features of the RPTS100 and then describes how to install and apply powerr to the RPTS100 hardware. Section 3, Hardware I/O and Software Controls describess system hardware I/O interface and provides instructions for setting up system operation and control. The standardized hardware I/O description facilitates RPTS100 operation in a typical Telemetry Ground Station environment. Section 4, Telemetry Signal Simulator Operation provides instructions for RPTS100 operations, ncluding set-up and status monitoring of all simulator operating features and parameters. 1

7 2 GETTING STARTED 2.1 Description The RPTS100 Telemetry Signal Simulator is a portable ruggedized device designed for pre-mission checkout of a telemetry ground station, as well as basic telemetry receiver functional testing. The simulator provides a user-selectable multi-mode modulator, calibrated single RF output, and an optional embedded Bit Synchronizer and Bit Error Rate Tester (BERT) with pseudo-random PCM code generator. The RPTS100 RF output frequency range is MHz, MHz, MHz, MHz and MHz. Available modulation formats include PCM/FM, NTSC Composite Video, PM, BPSK, QPSK, IRIG Tier I SOQPSK-TG and Tier II Multi-h CPM. The RPTS100 can also be externally modulated with a user-provided signal and test pattern, and also has binary file playback capability for external modulation using pre-recorded mission data. The RPTS100 design consists of a single channel RF Telemetry Test Signal, FPGA-based I/Q modulator an internal 10 MHz reference, and an optional embedded Bit Synchronizer/BERT that includes a pseudorandom code generator. These components are all housed in a small, hand-carried ruggedized batteryoperated enclosure designed for operation in support of TM ground stations. The Test Signal Simulator provides a phase-locked RF source and modulator with user-selectable, calibrated RF signal outputs from +10 dbm to -70 dbm in 0.1 db increments. A high power option is available that extends the RPTS100 output levels to +37 dbm. RPTS100 system set-up, control and status monitoring is provided by a front panel Touch Screen Configurations and Options The RPTS100 is produced in several user-specified configurations. Standard hardware features include: Single Band RF Tuning ( MHz); +10 to -70 dbm RF output; PCM/FM modulation; External modulation; recorded file playback and operation on both 12 VDC and 115/230 VAC power. Optional features include: an embedded Bit Synchronizer and BERT; MHz, MHz, MHz and MHz RF tuning; PM, BPSK, QPSK, Tier I SOQPSK-TG, Tier II Multi-h CPM and composite video modulation modes; and a +37 dbm High Power RF output. 2.2 Initial Hardware Set-up and Operation The user should read this User s Guide and become familiar and comfortable with the overall features, options and configuration of the specific RPTS100 system that will be used. Table 2-1 lists and describes the RPTS100 I/O. Figure 2-1 illustrates the RPTS100 I/O of all standard and optional configurations with respect to AC and DC battery power, inputs, outputs and Touch Screen controls Operation with AC or DC Power Source The RPTS100 can be operated either using its internal rechargeable 12 VDC batteries, or using an external 115/230 VAC, 50/60 Hz power source. A simple three position EXTERNAL AC IN OFF INTERNAL BATTERY System Power switch (Figure 2-1) is provided. 2

9 . 3 TELEMETRY SIGNAL SIMULATOR OPERATION 3.1 Overview This section describes all steps and features equired for RPTS100 operation. The front panel Touch Screen controls and displays described herein are applicable to all delivered RPTS100 systems. These Touch Screen controls and displays are described in subsequent paragraphs. 3.2 Touch Screen Control Panel Figure 3-1 depicts the front panel Touch Screen display. When the RPTS100 is turned on, the Touch Screen will take a moment to boot up and display the required operating controls. The resulting initial Touch Screen Display is as depictedd in Figure 3-1. Figure 3-1 also depicts the optional Bit Synchronizer and BERT controls. Figure 3-1 Simulator Touch Screenn Display As shown in Figure 3-1, the RPTS100 Touch Screen is divided into two main sub-panels: RF Control Panel - Frequency (MHz) - Outputs - 70 MHz Source - Level (dbm) - Synthesizer (Synth) Lock Indicator Modulation Control Panel - Mode - Data Sourcee - Deviation (Hz) - Data Rate (bps) - Auto Deviation Selection The optional Bit Sync/BERT controls are also shown in Figure 3-1 and summarized as follows: Bit Sync - Status - Rate - Setup BERT - Status - Seconds - Total Errors - Current BER - Average BER 4

10 Each of thesee functions is described in the following paragraphs RF Control Panel The RF Control panel (Figure 3-2) is used to select the output frequency and provide synthesizer status, RF output level control and selection of either an internal or external 70 MHz modulation source. Each of these functions is described in the following paragraphs. RF Control Panel Figure 3-2 RF Control Panel Frequency Selection Touching the Frequency (MHz) window produces the keyboard for frequency entry as shown in Figure 3-3. The RF Output Frequency is then typed in and entered by touching the Accept button. The RPTS100 will only accept valid frequencies of the particular frequency bands installed. The entire frequency (for example: ) must be typed in. If the frequency entered is not valid, a message will appear (Figure 3-4) indicating this status and prompting the operator to re-enter the correct frequency. 11 Synthesizer Indicator The Synth indicator is used to determine health and status monitoring of the Simulator RF frequency output. A Green LOCK Synth indication (Figure 3-5) means that the Simulator s RF synthesizer is operating properly and the Simulator can be tuned to valid frequency values. A Red UNLOCK Synth indication (Figure 3-6) indicates a RPTS100 hardware malfunction. Figure 3-5 Synthesizer Green LOCK Indication Figure 3-6 Synthesizer r Red UNLOCK Indication RF Output Level Touching the Level (dbm) window produces the keyboardd for RF output level entry (Figure 3-7). The desired RF Output level can then be typed in and entered by touching the Accept button. Use NEG for negative dbm output levels (i.e., -65 dbm), BkSpc for backk spacing and CLR to clear inputs and start over. Valid RF output level values are +10 dbm to -70 dbm in 0.1 db increments, and +37 dbm to -70 dbm with the Hi Power option installed. If the output level entered is not valid, a message will appear as indicated in Figure 3-8 prompting the operator to re-enter the correct RF output level. 12 RF Output Selection Touching the Outputs window results in a drop-down menu selection (OFF, CH1, CH2 or COMB) as shown in Figure 3-9. Unless the Simulator has been configured with dual RF outputs, selecting CH1, CH2 or COMB will enable the single channel RF output configuration. Selecting OFF turns the RF output off. Figure 3-9 RF Output Selection MHz Source Selection The Simulator uses either an internal 70 MHz for modulating the RF output, or accepts an external 70 MHz modulation source. Touching the 70 MHz Source window results in a drop-down menu (INTERNAL or EXTERNAL) as shown in Figure 3-10 for selection of the 70 MHz modulation source to be used. Figure MHz Source Selection 7

13 3.2.2 Modulation Control Panel The Modulation Control panel (Figure 3-11) is used to selectt modulation format, modulation data source, Data Rate and Deviation. Modulation Control Panel Figure 3-11 Modulation Control Panel Modulation Mode Selection Touching the Mode window enables a pull-down menu (Figure 3-12) for user selection of the desired modulation mode. In addition to CW (un-modulated RF Carrier output), available modulation modes include PCM/ /FM, PCM/PM, BPSK, QPSK, Tier I SOQPSK-TG, Tier II Multi-h CPM and optional NTSC Video (not shown). 14 Data Rate Selection Touching the Data Rate (bps) window enables a keypad display as shown in Figure The user types in the desired dataa rate and touches Accept. If the data rate entered is not valid, a message will appear as indicated in Figure 3-14 prompting the operator too re-enter the correct data rate value. Table 3-2 lists the valid data rate range for each available modulation mode. There is no requirement for deviation entry in any other modulation mode. Figure 3-16 depicts the message prompt provided if an invalid deviation value is entered. 15 Modulation Data Source Selection Touching on the Data Source windoww (Figure 3-17) providess a pull-down menu for selecting the desired modulation data source. Selecting (Internal) means that thee modulation source will be the Simulator s internal 70 MHz modulator (modulated RF outputt with no data stream). Selecting File Playback means the user plans to use a binary data stream playback file via the Simulator s USB port. Selecting External means that the user plans to use external I and Q data inputss as the modulation dataa source. Internal Internal Figure 3-17 Data Source Pull-Down Menu File Playback The File Playback format is binary, with no headers or any formatting. If the length of the Playback File is not a multiple of 32 bits (or 4 bytes) the data will be padded with zeros bits to make it a multiple of 32 bits. Figure 3-18 depicts the File Playback Control Panel when File Playback is selected. Figure 3-18 File Playback Control Panel 10

16 The procedure for using the File Playback mode is as follows: Step 1 Name and copy binary file to the root directory of a USB Flash Drive device. Ensure it has either an.out or. bin extension. Step 2 - Insert the USB Flash Drive into the Simulator s USB port. Step 3 - Touch the Data Source window and select File Playback. The File Playback control panel will appear as previously shown in Figure Step 4 Using the File Playback Control Panel, touch the Files button. The RPTS GUI File Manager window will pop up as shown in Figure Select the file to be loadedd and touch the Copy--> button. This will copy and store the file to the RPTS100 Local Drive. 17 Step 5 Touch the Select button and the GUI File Manger Window and select the file desired for playback. The selected file will appear in the File Playback Control Panel as shown in Figure The file name PN15_rep64.out is shown as an example PN15_rep64.out Figure 3-20 Selecting a File for Playback Step 6 Select the Modulation Mode and enter the desired Data Rate (bps) on the Modulation Control for the modulation mode and data rate that will use the selected playback file. Step 7 Referring to Figures 3-21 and 3-22, Select the Loop File check box if it is desired that the bit pattern keep repeating. Otherwise, the file will play only once. Press the Start button to begin the file playback. The Stop button can be pressed at any time to end the playback. 12

Press Close to exit the GUI File Manager Window Using an External Data Source When Data Source External is selected, the user provides an external TTL modulation input to the I Data In and Q Data In BNC connectors on the Simulator s front panel as defined in Tables 3-3 and 3-4. 19 3.2.3 Bit Synchronizer/BERT Option The Bit Synchronizer/BERT Option is shown in Figure 3-23, consisting of a BNC DATA IN connection. This option is used for telemetry receiver Bit Error Rate (BER) loop tests, and the receiver baseband video output is connected to the RPTS100 DATAA IN. Connect Receiver Baseband Video Out to RPTS DATA IN Figure 3-23 Bit Synchronizer/BERTT Option Bit Synchronizer and BERT Control Panelss Figure 3-24 depicts the Bit Synchronizer Control and BERT Controll Panels, which are enabled by selecting Setup. The Bit Sync Status displays a bit synchronizer OFF, UNLOCK or LOCK status indication. The Rcv Rate displays the bits per second in 1 x 10 -N (E-00N) format. User selectable features include Decoder Code, Encoder Code, Encoder Data Polarity, Pattern (2^n) and Loop Bandwidth. Bit Synchronizer Decoder and Encoder Code selections aree NRZ-L/M/S and Bi-Phase L/M/S. Encoder Data Polarity can be either Positive or Negative. Pattern Selection is PN7F, PN11F, PN15F or PN23F. Loop Bandwidth can be selectable in percentagee (%). BERT Status displays a BERT OFF,, SYNC or LOSS statuss indication. Seconds displays the BERT test interval in seconds. Current BER displays the current BER.. Total Errors display the total number of bit errors during the test interval. Test Period provides a pull-down Test Period selection in seconds, or accumulated time (free-running). Selecting Start/Stop startss and stops the BER tests. Figure

20 Bit Synchronize er/bert Control Panels High Power RF Output Option As previously discussed and illustrated, the RPTS100 provides for a +37 dbm high power RF output option. With this option installed, the user has the ability to use the RPTS100 in a modified 0dBm to -70 dbm output range, or switch in a +37dBm to -33dBm range as shown in Figure When connected to the high power amplifier stage the control software should be set to a nominal -3dBm output level. The maximum output level is limited in this configuration to 0dBm so that the input to the high power amplifier cannot be over driven and damaged.
