6 Test beam in May - Results Results - Conclusions Two assumptions are confirmed: Time resolution (TR) of 6x6 mm2 is considerably better than of 3x3 mm2 Hamamatsu SiPMs no further tests with smaller SiPMs TR can be improved by increasing the SiPM-area using the sum function of MUSIC Comparison of HPK S CS 6x6 mm2 and HPK S CS 3x3 mm2, voltage vs TR Comparison between covered area for one or two HPK S CS (6x6 mm2), voltage vs TR 6

7 Test beam in May - Results Ambiguous results Dependence of distance between beam and SiPM array: 2-SiPM-array: TR improves with smaller distance (the beam was shifted to the left, the right end of the bar was not polished) 8-SiPM-array: TR constant, this unexpected result might occur due to a problem with the trigger PMTs Beam distance to SiPM array (2 HPK S CS) versus TR ( ps) at 57 V Beam distance to SiPM array (8 HPK S PE) versus TR, constant < 100 ps. 7

8 Test beam in June Setup Testbeam Scintillator bars EJ-204: one 50x6x1 cm3 without lightguide and two 150x6x1 cm3 with and without lightguide SiPM arrays: 8 HPK S PE (6x6 mm2) all in parallel and with four groups of two in parallel Scintillator bar EJ x11x2.5 cm3 without lightguide SiPM arrays: 4 HPK S CS and 8 HPK S PE all in parallel Main goals for measurements: Resolution as a function of # SiPMs Comparison series vs. parallel connection Resolution as a function of bar position Comparison bar dimensions, short bar vs long bar wavelength peaks HPK S13360: EJ-204: EJ-200: 450 nm 408 nm 425 nm 8

12 Timing Detector - Cost Estimate For the detector dimensions 5 m x 10 m with a bar of 101 cm x 6 cm x 1 cm 10 m 5 col x 182 row = 910 bars 910 bars x 2 = 1820 channel (ch) 1820 ch x 8 SiPMs = SiPMs Plastic EJ-200, offer by Scionix 910 bars: 150 EUR/bar Total: 910 x 150 EUR = 148 kchf SiPMs based on 6x6 mm2 S NE 1600 pcs: 24 CHF/SiPM Total: 1600 x 24 = 384 kchf 10% cheaper if one buys an array of 8 Electronics FE: 80 EUR/MUSIC: Total: 80 x 1820 ch = 157 kchf + DAQ part / SAMPIC Calibration system (light pulser + fibers) to be estimated Power supplies not included 5m 12

13 Summary The current test setups include single SiPMs and SiPM arrays from Hamamatsu, 6 x 6 mm2 and 3 x 3 mm2 The results from the May testbeam show: - 6 x 6 mm2 SiPMs reach much better time resolution than 3 x 3 mm2 SiPMs - The time resolution can be improved by raising the number of SiPMs - A time resolution below 100 ps could be achieved even under suboptimal circumstances During the June testbeam three different scintillator configurations will be tested and more refined measurements concerning number of SiPMs and impact position are planned A prototype with a 3 x 3 scintillator array is planned for end of 2018 Further options for readout are considered A rough estimate of the main contributions to the overall cost without calibration system and power supplies amounts to approximately 700,000 CHF from which the SiPMs make up 55 % 13

16 Test beam in May - Results Problems during May test beam: Trigger malfunctioning: one of the trigger counters was not a scintillator better than 45 ps (measured with CF 8 %) should be achievable Voltages for the 8-SiPM-array not calibrated Due to new start of accelerator: low event rate during the first days widely varying event numbers between measurements changing particle types (μ, p) changing beam energy
