BBC BROADCASTING DILEMMA The broadcasting world is beginning to change International Telecommunication Union Review of Spectrum MHz in Region 1 World Radio Conference 2019 resolves to carry out sharing and compatibility studies, as appropriate, in the frequency band MHz in Region 1 between the broadcasting and mobile services, taking into account relevant ITU-R studies, Recommendations and Reports
INNOVATE TO SURVIVE The BBC is changing too iplayer is the primary brand More than just catch-up More directly delivered content Everything on demand This is what the audience expects
APPS WITH EVERYTHING! Apps mean business No App no audience! New Apps simplify access Allows experimental technologies VR AR Object Based Audio UHD High Dynamic Range
APPS WITH EVERYTHING! Everyone LOVES Apps New Apps simplify access Only if you can use them Only if you can find them Only if they mean something Or they are just part of the wallpaper!

BBC UHD BLUE PLANET II Social Media analytics Capita There was lots of social media activity with over 80% of twitter feedback being positive or neutral. The main themes were: Comments on how good Blue Planet 2 in UHD was Complaints about a specific device not being supported Complaints about having to wait for the Samsung Firmware update
BBC UHD BLUE PLANET II National Press comments Blue Planet in UHD made national news in a significant number of publications.
BBC UHD BLUE PLANET II HotUKdeals & YouTube Feedback Hotukdeals users voted the Blue Planet II UHD post incredibly hot reaching over 5000 degrees! Comments were overwhelmingly positive: I would genuinely buy a 4k TV just for this Worth the licence fee alone It looks absolutely gorgeous one notch above the [4K] SDR presentation Buffering is kept to a minimum Quickest and most seamless user experience I ve seen from a streaming service
UHD CONTENT BBC UHD Programmes will be HDR Almost all professional camera sensors are HDR! 4K BT.709 is no longer acceptable as UHD Many cameras exceed 14 stops dynamic range Low black level noise is important Not all camera electronics can handle HDR Few codecs handle HDR Camera set-ups are vital
LOCATION IS TOUGH Viewing in the field (EBU TECH 3320) HDR Portable Displays HDR HLG PQ SLog3 1500cd/m 2 display Onboard recording 3840 x bit Cost - under $1200 US!
LOCATION IS TOUGH Backup and Store Consumer prices for broadcast requirements! DO NOT process HDR images without good monitoring! File transfers no different to UHD File Sizes 5% to 10% larger than equivalent UHD Hardware the usual! Cloud or local Local now under $200 4TB Cloud with 5G
SESSION 3 - HDR CAMERA USE EBU R118 Noise
BLACK IS THE NEW BLACK HDR is about low-lights not high-lights Very low noise cameras Allow natural look shoots Bring out colour detail in low-light areas HDR means Highlights aren t clipped Shadow detail isn t crushed Fire and candles look natural HDR does not reduce the lighting bill!

AUDIO FOR UHD Next Generation Audio is bigger and better Dolby Atmos One of the most well know home and cinema systems DTS:X Dolby Atmos for the home brings the ultimate cinema sound experience to your home theatre to create powerful, moving audio that flows around you The other most well know home and cinema systems DTS:X places sound where it would occur naturally in space, creating the most lifelike, multi-dimensional audio experience ever MPEG-H A standard that s very interesting to broadcasters MPEG-H offers consumers more accurate sound and the ability to adjust the sound to their preferences to hear it as it at its best on their own devices
AUDIO FOR UHD Next Generation Audio is in the home now But this will never happen
AUDIO FOR UHD Next Generation Audio is in the home now Can these solve the problem
WE ALWAYS FORGET AUDIO IS CHANGING TOO What is our audience doing and expecting? Qualcomm Five Audio Trends The Way We Listen Over 80 percent of consumers use their smartphones to store and stream music, taking advantage of the ease and variety offered by streaming services such as Spotify, TuneIn, and others. Embracing Wireless People want quality audio everywhere, they also want devices they can use all day, every day, and take anywhere whether it s a pair of truly wireless earbuds they use when working out, or a portable speaker that they can take to the beach. Demand For Quality What started as an audiophile requirement has gained momentum in mainstream consumer electronics. Consumers are now demanding wireless audio that doesn t compromise on audio quality. Expecting Smart Speakers and Virtual Assistants Consumers now want to be educated, entertained, or informed, simply by asking a question or giving a command. As cloud-connection grows, smart assistant capability is expected to be included in many more (if not all) devices. Using Hearable Devices Hearables reflects the convergence of features from traditional audio devices and wearable technology in ultrasmall form factors. Users want high quality audio combined with advanced features, including the addition of sensors for biometrics, algorithms for voice recognition, and support for cloud-connected ecosystems.
MASTERING Localisation is new for Television Traditional work flows make versioning expensive Master files for each version Mixed Media Files HD Offline Take up space EDL Data Duplicate content many times HD Proxy Processing Make changes time consuming Are a logistical nightmare SAN Nearline Mixed Media Conform Format & Colour Space Conversion Pre Grade Noise Reduction UHD/HDR Grade Grading Data Noise Reduction Finishing On-line Mastering & Delivery Special FX Preparation & Transcode Processing Final Video FX & Burnt In Graphics/Text Special FX

HDR FOR BROADCAST AND ON-LINE Final Thoughts Broadcasters will benefit from a graceful, non-disruptive introduction of HDR. The majority of the audience will watch programmes on non HDR televisions for many years. It is vital that the HDR systems allow easy automated conversion of an HDR programmes to Standard Dynamic Range (SDR). Mapping of SDR to HDR will be key to mixing old and new content in HDR programming and distribution. Creative practices in production should not have adverse effects such as visual fatigue or discomfort when viewed for a significant period of time
