1 Instructions for DataMark PDF Temperature Logger DataMark provides a convenient way to obtain high accuracy temperature data in transit. The unit is a self contained temperature logger that plugs directly into the USB port of a PC computer. Starting DataMark is supplied in protective clear plastic sleeves that are sealed to protect the unit from moisture. To start, press three times on the START button by applying thumb pressure through the plastic sleeve. Each press of the button is confirmed by the each of the three LEDs coming on from bottom to top, as shown at right. You will have 10 seconds to perform this "1 2 3" operation to start the unit. If you change your mind, just wait and the start function resets after 10 seconds elapse. Each light stays lit when the startup sequence is keyed in. At the end of this sequence, the lights flash in "1 2 3" order as a final confirmation. Press #1 Bottom yellow LED Press #2 Middle Green LED added Stopping, Alert Indicators and Marking the Record When the STOP button is pressed, all the LEDs light up. Stopping recording requires the three sequential button presses. Each of the LEDs go out in reverse sequence: Top Red, Middle Green, and Bottom Yellow, in order. Press #3 Top Red LED added A single press of the STOP button will mark the record, but will not terminate the recording process. The LED indicators have very specific patterns that signal alert conditions. These patterns warn the user of potential alert conditions (over or under critical temperatures) for less than the specified duration, or excursions of temperature that exceed the criteria for the temperature threshold and the specified duration. A single press of the START button while the unit is running will activate the alert indicators to show the current status. These are "preset" in standard tags, but can be reset by your dealer or by the user. Instructions for user resetting of the alert parameters is shown in a later section in this user guide. On the following page, a chart describes all or the LED light patterns and how they signal particular conditions. 1

2 Reading the Alert LEDs Normal Green LED Flashing This pattern indicates that the logger is operating normally and that there have been no temperature excursions at all above or below the preset temperature values. Normal + High Alert Green and Red LEDs Flashing This pattern there has been at least one upper limit temperature excursion above the preset temperature limit value, but the indicated duration of this excursion has not exceeded the preset "time over temperature" value. High Alert Red LED Flashing This pattern indicates there has been at least one temperature excursion above the preset high temperature value and there has been a total "time over temperature" duration that exceeded the preset time value for the high temperature limit. Normal + Low Alert Green and Yellow LEDs Flashing This pattern that there has been at least one lower limit temperature excursion below the preset temperature limit value, but the indicated duration of this excursion has not exceeded the preset "time under temperature" value. Low Alert Yellow LED Flashing This pattern indicates there have been at least one temperature excursion below the preset low temperature value and has a total "time under temperature" duration that exceeded the preset time value for the low temperature limit. High and Low Alert Red and Yellow LEDs Flashing This pattern indicates that there have been at least one temperature excursion below the present low temperature value and at least one temperature excursion above the present high temperature value. In both cases, the "time over/undertemperature" durations have exceeded the preset time limits for both high and low settings. 2

3 Reading the Data on the Computer Installing the "Mini App" for DataMark DataMark requires installation of a very small software function. To obtain the software, click on the link supplied to your by the DataMark seller. Go to the download site recommended to you and hit enter. The message returned will vary with the type of browser you are using. All browsers will prompt you to Run or Save. ALWAYS SELECT SAVE. Save the file in a convenient folder. The program will create its own secure database in whatever folder you put the exe file. When you wish to run the program, just click on it and it will start up. Note that this program is not installed into the Windows environment. It just is loaded every time the exe file is clicked. This is entirely normal. For example, in Windows 7 you will get this message: Just click Run and the program will come up instantly. If you do not want to see this repeatedly, unclick the "Always ask" checkbox. There are different forms of this warning on different operating systems, but the process is the same. When the program opens, an icon for the secure database will appear. You will not be able to open the database...just ignore it and proceed with the program. Contact your dealer more details. 3

4 USB Configuration When you first plug in a DataMark unit, in most computers the installation for the driver will be automatic. In Windows 7, you will most likely not have a successful installation the first time. There is an easy fix for this...leave the unit plugged into the USB port and reboot your computer. Windows 7 will recognize the device and will then install the drivers. If you are have any difficulty, ask your dealer. User Configuration of DataMark Users can configure a DataMark to their own requirements. Although each DataMark as supplied in a sealed clear plastic sleeve, the un started DataMark can be removed and inserted into a USB port for setting of parameters. When this is done, the screen will show somewhat differently from the screen that is produced when reading a DataMark at the end of a temperature recording. It looks like this: Click here to customize the parameters for your application. Basic information from the inserted, unstarted DataMark is shown in the "Device Information" panel, including Serial Number, Alert parameters, logging interval and Start Delay. Note that the NOT STARTED message is displayed, as well. Selecting "Device Settings, as shown above, results in a dialog box that presents the user with data boxes to fill for the whole range of parameters: 4

5 All of the parameters that are shown with a "white box" above can be changed. The program will not allow impossible combinations. Sampling period (log interval) is internally calculated. If you change the Log duration parameter, the program will automatically select the interval that distributes the 5,000 available readings over that span of time. Device notes is a section that permits the user to enter data that is relevant to the shipment. This information is stored internally in the DataMark, and will be displayed later when and if the DataMark is downloaded. You will be prompted to remove the DataMark and then put it back into the USB port to record the changes. This takes a few seconds, and then the changes are recorded internally. 5
