5 Install Advice The Basics Cat5e or Cat6 All new cable installs should be to at least Gigabit networking standards of 250Mhz, therefore it is important to ensure your Cat5e/6 meets this minimum standard. Some consideration maybe needed in providing a 10GB infrastructure depending on your application. In this instance Cat6a 500Mhz cable will be applicable taking care to specify 500Mhz compliant accessories. Cat5e is not always Cat5e For long cable runs, 4 pair, solid core cable is essential to ensure advertised transmission lengths are achieved. Using stranded core cable or low quality Cat5e will dramatically effect the performance of any HDMI over Cat5e/6 product. Quality of connector termination is also essential for good performance. Before using other contractors cables Connect a Full HD 1080p /4K source to a display over the Cat5e cable using a pair of extenders (HDBaseT/IP). Ensure you are achieving Full HD 1080p/4K over the Cat5e you intend to use, remembering that past use of analogue video is not a measure for success when dealing with full digital HD signals. Installing New Cables Ensure at least 12 separation between Cat5e/6 cables and mains electric. Although most technologies are very good at removing interference caused by EMI, separation on new cable installs is always good practice. Using patch panels and wall outlets will reduced 10% in advertized transmission distance, therefore use the 90m + 10m rule (allowing 10m for connections). Use 568B RJ45 Wiring Configuration Good Ventilation & Rack Design Keeping equipment cool is essential to increase durability and hassle free performance. Always install a good UPS To keep essential equipment running to prevent damage & needless support calls.

6 What should I use & Why? HDMI, HDBaseT, JP2K, H.264???

7 What factors influence my decision? The Big Questions? Customer requirement what are you trying to achieve? Not every customer needs 4K maybe other more important factors or restrictions in design. Scalability vs Cost analysis some technologies are more scalable when looking at cost per I/Os. Are you working with existing cable infrastructures that may exclude some function or video quality (sub Gigabit)? Size of install? Single conference room? Department? building to building? Easy platform for expansion? Are you sharing the network infrastructure with other IP devices or is it dedicated to AV only? Complexity of installation and location of content (centralized or de-centralized)? Type of content being distributed? Standard sources? recorded content? Need to manage Audio (Microphones)? Working around the limitations of Technology platforms there is no one fits all solution out there! Comfort level of integrator from AV background or IT background?

10 HDMI Cables HDMI technology was introduced in 2003 and has global recognition with over 3.7 billion consumer devices today with the HDMI logo. HDMI Cables HDMI has big advantages over other types of audio/video connectivity but also has some limitations with cable length which has been the source of much frustration I am sure for everyone. HDMI connectivity can still be used in some install scenarios especially where cable lengths are under 20ft, but would not recommend embedding HDMI cables into the fabric of any building. Very hard to field repair and can not be upgraded as the HDMI standard progresses beyond the cables capability. 13 The basics explained Why the need for compression? Even low resolution uncompressed video & frame rates would require bandwidth and storage space far in in excess of that available from a Gigabit network. Therefore to make use of the tremendous flexibility and scalability of IP, Video files must be made smaller. The combination of significant gains in storage, transmission and processor technologies combined with improved compression algorithms have now made it possible for widespread use of HD over IP solutions whilst protecting image quality. WyreStorm uses both JPEG2000 & H264 compression technologies to distribute HD Video and other signals over IT networks, with both having there own unique benefits. Although Lossy compression methods are used, sophisticated algorithms protect the content from sometimes negligible differences between the native content and compressed content, this is called visually lossless compression. Both JP2K & H264 use visually lossless compression techniques.

14 The basics explained IP Video Compression The concept behind any compression technology is to 1 st take away any obvious redundancy in the image i.e. seen as invisible to the human eye, thereby reducing the size of data. After this, the main differences in these complex compression techniques is that JP2K compresses each individual frame, whilst H264 compresses fewer frames filling the gaps based on calculated differences between the sampled frames. The net result and one of the big differences between JP2K and H264 is that H264 will make less demand on your network, infact H264 has 3-5 times more network efficiency than JP2K. H264 also allows you to combine multiple signals (Multiplexing) which could involve multiple video streams and many audio streams from stereo or mono audio devices including microphones. One of the main drives in the market isn t necessarily higher resolutions, but maintaining video quality at lower bandwidths, hence H265 as an emerging standard. By default this naturally gives more overhead to increase resolution as well. Media storage & capacity is also a big consideration.

22 Multi-Layer Distribution JPEG2000/H Gigabit Layer 2 Switches with MultiCast Support IGMP Snooping enabled (no VLAN set-up) With JP2Ks higher bandwidth demands, some consideration in design is needed. TX1 Linking switches with a single Cat6 will limit each switch to 7 sources due to peak video demands of 150Mb/s. Linking using multiple Cat6 or 10G Fibre will overcome most of these issues. Switching bandwidth capabilities are also a consideration with many low cost products having insufficient overhead to manage JP2K.

24 HDBaseT Similar to IP, HDBaseT is a technology available for HDMI connectivity which uses Cat5e/6 cable, but it is important to remember that the HDBaseT device is not IP addressable. Overview One of the main advantages is that HDBaseT sends uncompressed signals with no form of compression up to 10.2Gbps including 4K 4:2:0 at 60hz (HDMI 1.4), but lacks the flexibility, scalability & functions of IP based systems. Similar to IP, it can transmit signals up to 100m (330ft) along with Ethernet, IR, Serial control signals & low voltage power up to 100watts, which is often used to power receiving accessories rather than displays themselves. Unlike IP solutions, HDBaseT is a more plug and play AV centric product capable of high quality HD distribution without the need for additional network switches and components. Many products including professional projectors now have a HDBaseT receiving module builtin allowing you to connect directly to other HDBaseT transmitting devices.

44 Conclusions The conclusion is that there is no one perfect solution and if it did exist, it s cost would probably exclude it from the majority of considerations. Like all system designs there are compromises. WyreStorm HDMI has a place in small footprint design where the highest video quality is required. HDBaseT works well for centralized medium sized installs where again the best video quality is needed. For more flexible I/Os design with scalable cost considerations with some de-centralization JPEG2000 is advisable. For Video Wall processing the decision is based on single image (JP2K) vs multi-image processing (H.264) For the largest system designs with more complex routing, multiplexing and audio processing then H.264 is the way to go. In reality, a hybrid system picking the best from each platform is a real possibility, all controlled from a single UI. The customer is fully satisfied and often doesn t realize there are several solutions all happily co-existing.
