3 CONTENT / INTRODUCTION VATS / MICS SHORT INTRODUCTION The terms VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery) and MICS (Minimal Invasive Cardiac Surgery) describe minimal invasive surgery methods in lung and heart surgery. They have significant advantages compared to traditional operations. Classic procedures require a median sternotomy, while VATS / MICS operations are performed with several small incisions without cutting the sternum. To ensure a good visibility, endoscopes and small retractors are used. In addition, instruments with long, thin shafts and delicate working elements, provide an excellent and easy access to the deep lying and sensitive anatomy. The usage of best materials and technologies ensures a precise and comfortable working.
