Introduction General This manual gives you a general and straightforward survey of the WinKARIN system design and the program layout. You will find detailed information about the practical aspects of the WinKARIN monitoring software in the on-line help file of the program itself. By the way, do not miss having a look at the status line, as it delivers useful advice, too. Most specific information, in particular information about commands for the spare channel configuration (N+1) is packed into a special on-line help file that is accessible via a hotspot in the block-diagrams of the modules concerned. WinKARIN comes with a couple of utilities. These utilities are not dealt with in this manual. See the on-line help file of the WinKARIN Utilities and the readme.txt file of the KARIN Utilities for specific information about these utilities. If you cannot find a good answer to your question in the manual, the on-line help, the readme files and the status line, please contact your customer service. NOTE: For the installation and start-up of the monitoring program good knowledge of PC, Microsoft WINDOWS and modem handling in general and familiarity with online help-files in particular is required. ü WinKARIN 3.X 1-5
Introduction Terminology Monitoring modes Listener Master Extended Master Display modes Headend Modules Channels Module menu The monitoring program can be operated in three modes, "Listener", "Master" and "Extended Master", which are optimized for specific purposes and hardware requirements. Monitoring mode with the most restrictions. A PC in the Listener mode cannot send, but only receive data. It follows from this that switches in the KARINheadend cannot be set in this mode. Monitoring mode that is marked by mutual communication between the PC and the KARIN headend. A bidirectional connection with the headend is needed. Monitoring mode that enables the user to set switches in the KARIN headend. The monitoring program is capable of displaying the KARIN headend in the modes "Headend", "Modules" and "Channels", emphasizing different functional aspects of the headend. Display mode in which the KARIN headend is displayed according to its mechanical design. Display mode in which the KARIN headend is represented as a list of module types. Display mode in which the KARIN headend is represented as a list of configurated channels. For each monitored module there is a module menu. It includes the front-panel and the block-diagram of the module with the measured values. It may also include one or more switches and editing fields. Module address Each module has a module address of its own (e.g. rack 2 / main frame 5 / module 8). Channel name Limit exceedings Rack system Range of compact devices Data modem RF-modem A channel name (e. g. CNN) can be assigned (see also channels) to modules that are involved in processing the same channel.. For each measured value a lower and a higher limit can be defined. If one of these values is exceeded, a warning (limit exceeding) is indicated. KARIN headend consisting of racks and including a data modem. KARIN compact main frame with a RS 232 interface on the front-panel of the power-supply. Central monitoring unit in the KARIN-headend. Monitoring a headend is not possible without a data modem. Component of the KARIN system that must be installed in order to enable communication (PC <---> KARIN) via the RF-network. 1-6 WinKARIN 3.X ü

KARIN2 specifications A number of advanced features of WinKARIN (frequency setting, file transfer to modules, channel configuration, spare channel configuration) requires that your headend is compatible with KARIN 2 specifications. This implies that you must have a data modem of the DM502 type or higher and data processors of the DP502 type or higher to utilize these functions. To avoid any troubles we would like to recommend replacing old data processors by data processors of the DP502 type or higher. 2-2 WinKARIN 3.X ü
Installation If you, however, prefer a combination of data processors DP501 and DP502 or higher to a uniform solution, make sure that the appropiate data processor is installed in the main frame to work with a KARIN 2 module. Otherwise the functions of the module will be reduced or the module will not work at all. See the compatibility list you can find in the appendix and the release notes for the latest news about the functional relationship between data modem and data processors on the one hand and modules on the other hand.. NOTE: Generally speaking, a headend that is equipped with at least a data modem DM501 and one or more data processors DP501 must be considered a KARIN 1 headend, to which advanced WinKARIN functions cannot be applied. ATTENTION: The Remote Control Interface (FUS), which communicates with WinKARIN Remote Control, is a K2 module! Therefore complete equipment of the rack with data processors DP 502 or higher is required. ü WinKARIN 3.X 2-3
Installation Installation ATTENTION: For the correct configuration of WinKARIN Remote Control the complete study of all relevant operating/operator manuals (WinKARIN, WinKARIN Remote Control, Remote Control Interface) is absolutely necessary before going any further! Having obtained WinKARIN on floppy disk, make backup copies. Store the original disks in a safe place. Use the backup copies for the installation. Windows 3.X 1. Start Windows 3.X. 2. Start "Setup.exe" from Disk 1 or start "setup.exe" in the sub-directory "Disk 1" of the CD 3. Follow the instructions of the setup programme and select "WinKARIN" for installation. Windows After inserting the CD-ROM the setup programme starts automatically. 2. Follow the instructions of the program setup and select "WinKARIN" for installation. Start Requirements Before starting the monitoring program, please check the RS 232 interface connection. Start of the monitoring program Start the monitoring program by a double-click on the "WinKARIN" icon. When starting the monitoring program, a distinction has to be made between the following variants: z The PC is connected with the data modem (rack configuration). z The PC is connected with the compact power supply (main frame configuration). 2-4 WinKARIN 3.X ü
Installation Monitoring with data modem (rack configuration) After the start you can see the message "GET CONFIGURATION". This indicates that the communication with the data modem is correct. After some time (max. 10 min.) the message "GET CONFIGURATION" disappears and the mechanical design of the system is displayed (display mode "Headend"). The program is working in the Listener mode. Monitoring without data modem (main frame configuration) In the monitor you can see the message "NO COMMUNICATION". After approx. 10 seconds the menu item "Master" can be selected (bold type). Click the menu item "Master". After a few seconds the message "NO COMMUNICATI- ON" disappears and the mechanical composition of the system is displayed. (display mode "Headend"). For the main frame configuration the monitoring mode "Listener" is not available. Configuration Preferences In the menu "File\Preferences" the following settings can be made for the monitoring program: z z z z Selection of a communication port Kind and extent of the error report Rack size definition Password change ATTENTION The monitoring program is delivered with the passwords "GGA1", "GGA2", "GGA3", "GGA4" and "GGA5". Change these passwords in order to prevent manipulations of unauthorized persons. Write down any new password for your record. If you have lost the password, please contact your customer service. Channel configuration Configurating the display mode "Channels" means that all modules that are involved in processing a particular channel, up and down converters among others, are assigned to a channel name (e.g. CNN). Such assignments are needed for working in the display mode "Channels". ü WinKARIN 3.X 2-5
Installation NOTE: If you configurate a channel, you should already be familiar with the monitoring program. If you are not, please consult the on-line help file and read the how-to-do unit about channel configuration first. 2-6 WinKARIN 3.X ü
Operation General Overall design WinKARIN is capable of generating three different views of the headend. The headend view is based on the mechanical design of the headend and leads the user from the rack level to the main frame level and the module level. The modules view focuses on module types installed in the headend and leads the user from the modules level to the module menu. The channels view highlights the associations between channels/programs on the one hand and modules participating in the processing of these channels on the other hand. All three views converge into the module menu that contains the front-panel and the block-diagram of the module with optional switching facilities and indicates various measuring values. 18 Operation Icons Editing fields Quite a number of functions are accessible via icons. The meaning of each icon is explained in the status line of WinKARIN. The number of icons and their outlook in the main menu area may vary according to the activated monitoring mode. One or more editing fields may be embedded in the block-diagrams that differ in function. The function of a particular editing field is signalled by a cursor transformation. In other words, the cursor changes its shape whenever you move the mouse-pointer over the editing field. level meter available for indication of measured values limit is settable for the measured value level meter is available, limit is settable and measured value is adjustable level meter is available and measured value is adjustable input/output dialog available for channel setting, frequency setting, text output (on-line help) a.o. Hotspots Occasionally hotspots like "Commands" or "Preferences" may appear in blockdiagrams; they serve, for example, to load commands and configuration files from and to modules. The commands and the contents of the configuration files are explained in module-specific help files, which can be invoked via the hotspot HELP in the module menu (in the block diagram itself). A single blockdiagram may contain several hotspots of the same type. Generally speaking, the following types of hotspots can be distinguished: File transfer Window: This window serves the function of editing and updating a configuration file. In order to edit the configuration file it must be loaded from the module with the DOWNLOAD function. After editing the file it can be uploaded with the UPLOAD function and replaces the original file in the module. The file can also be stored on the hard disk with the SAVE function and later on be loaded into the File Transfer Window with the LOAD function. The SAVE and LOAD functions primarily serve to set up identical KARIN headend systems in an easy way through the distribution of a configuration file. ü WinKARIN 3.X 3-3
Operation NOTE: After changing the configuration file make sure that the module has accepted the new settings. To do so, load the configuration file once again into the File Transfer Window (after uploading the file to the module) and see if the configuration file contains the required entries now. Info Download Window: In this window read-only information is downloaded from the module. This information is directly accessible after opening the Info Download Window and may relate to recorded transmission errors, for example. Moreover, commands (for the Command Transfer Window) and the contents of the configuration file (for the File Transfer Window) may be described in an Info Download Window. NOTE: After changing settings in a configuration file the display of information in the Info Download Window can be updated with the DOWNLOAD function in order to check whether the new settings have caused any signal errors. Command Transfer Window: After the input of a command this command can be sent to the module with the UPLOAD function. Numeric Input Window: In the Numeric input a numerical value can be entered, for example, a frequency. Signalling The button "Error" or "Limit" respectively has a coloured background. The color indicates the following monitoring states: z green The system works perfectly z red There are faults/limit exceedings in the system z yellow There are still faults/limit exceedings in the system, but the system operator has already inspected the menu "Active Errors" or "Active Limits". NOTE: In addition, racks, main frames and modules are marked red, when an error occurs. Moreover, any error can be indicated by an alarm signal (optionally). 3-4 WinKARIN 3.X ü
Operation Menu structure In the following the functions of the individual menus of WinKARIN are described from left to right in a general way. You will find details about how to handle the WinKARIN functions in the on-line help file. File Setup printer Preferences Exit Here you can select and configure the printer of your choice. The procedure for doing this is identical with the one for other Windows applications. After installing WinKARIN you should check the presettings of the password, the communication port, the protocol output devices, the rack size and the time synchronisation of the PCs in the headend. Click EXIT to leave WinKARIN. ü WinKARIN 3.X 3-5
Operation View Headend Modules Channels Active errors Active limits Active differences History Limitsettings Module data Relative In the HEADEND view WinKARIN creates an image of the mechanical design of the headend and presents the headend as abstract images of racks, main frames, modules and block-diagrams. You can descend step-by-step to the module menu, which shows the module front-panel and the block-diagram. At the same time it presents the measured values on a numerical or level-meter display. In the MODULES view the headend is represented as a list of module types and values the user can choose from. You can descend from the module types level to the measured value indication and the module menu with the blockdiagram (see above). In the CHANNEL view WinKARIN gives the user access to channel information via lined-up module front-panels representing the modules accociated with a particular channel. WinKARIN keeps track of all the errors that have occured in the headend so far and collects them in a table together with information about the module and the channel concerned. You can view the list and print it out. WinKARIN records all limit exceedings that have occured in the headend so far in a table together with additional information about the module and channel concerned. You can view the list and print it out. WinKARIN collects information about non-default switch-overs of modules triggered by the user in a table together with additional information about the module and the channel concerned. WinKARIN writes all extra-ordinary events (errors, changes of switches, addition of modules) in a table, which is called history. You can print out this list and keep it for service purposes. WinKARIN records all the limits set by the user in a table together with additional information about the module and channel concerned. You can view this list, but you cannot print it out. WinKARIN is able to read important module data ( number, serial number, repair state etc.) from the EPROM of KARIN 2 modules and display them on the screen. WinKARIN permits to save present measured values in KARIN2 modules for reference purposes. Relative indication of measuring values is based on these stored reference values (see "Definitions - Adjust values") 3-6 WinKARIN 3.X ü
Operation Mode Listener Master Extended Master In the LISTENER mode WinKARIN does not send any data to the headend. As a consequence, module switchings are impossible and measuring values only partly displayed. Moreover, the actualisation of data may take considerable time. A PC is always in the listener mode if a RF-modem is used without equipped reverse channel, which means that there is no bidirectional connection between the headend and the PC, or another PC has changed to the Master mode. WinKARIN controls the data stream from and to the headend. The data to be displayed are being continuously actualized. For the change of the PC to the Master mode a bidirectional connection with the headend is necessary, that is, the PC must be connected to the data modem or the main frame powersupply. When connecting the PC to the RF-modem the reverse channel must be available. In the MASTER MODE module switchings are impossible and only a part of the measuring values displayed. In the EXTENDED MASTER MODE all information is available and module switchings are possible. ATTENTION: Leave the Extended master mode, when you have made switchovers in order to avoid unauthorised switchings. ü WinKARIN 3.X 3-7
Operation Tools Default Read headend Print Select headend WinKARIN enables you to define defaults of your own, if and only if you have a KARIN 2 headend (see KARIN2 specifications). This option sets module switches to their default positions. Running WinKARIN you can add modules any time you want. After adding modules to your headend and thus changing the configuration, you can tell WinKA- RIN to read in the new configuration immediately (otherwise there might be some delay in updating the headend information). Important information about modules and the channel configuration of your station can be printed out from anywhere you are in WinKARIN. All system-specific data (e.g. channel configuration, labels and notes) of a particular headend(s) can be stored in a configuration file in order to monitor and control several different headends with WinKARIN. 3-8 WinKARIN 3.X ü
Operation Definitions Labels, notes and marks Channels Limits Default Adjust values Reset adjust. values In WinKARIN objects (racks, main frames and modules) are assigned labels, marks and notes to facilitate recognition. While labels and marks ("identifiers") are directly displayed on the objects, notes are displayed in the lower status line. The user can adapt this kind of information to his needs and assign identifiers and notes of his choice to objects of the headend. In WinKARIN you can assign modules to operating channels (programs). This implies that you have to tell WinKARIN, which devices are involved in the processing of a particular channel. In WinKARIN various limits and the interval at which the measured value should be recorded can be set. This supports error detection and problem solving. If a limit is exceeded, an alarm is triggered (acoustic and / or visual) and the alarm is recorded in the history for review purposes. WinKARIN enables you to define defaults of your own, if and only if you have a KARIN 2 headend. WinKARIN permits to save present measured values in KARIN2 modules as reference values for the relative indication of measured values. Deletes the stored reference values. ü WinKARIN 3.X 3-9
