Project Experiences (1) Jul Jan. 2015: Major Investigator of Smart Futures Fellowship funded by Queensland Government, Australia. Research Topic: Autostereoscopic Immersive 3-D Video Communications System Error resilience and concealment for multi-view video plus depth based 3-D video coding. Motivations and Contributions: Recently, three dimensional video (3DV) has gained increasing interests as a new multimedia technique, which evolvs towards new systems that include glassless displays and provide realistic impression of depth. In such 3-D video system, the multi-view video plus depth (MVD) representation has emerged as the best format for representing 3-D video. Similar to 2-D video, 3-D video is also very sensitive to transmission errors due to errors propagated from the current frame to the future predicted frames. Moreover, since the virtual views are rendered from the compressed texture video and depth maps, transmission errors of the distorted texture videos and depth maps can be additionally propagated to the virtual views. Therefore, compared to the reliability of the transmission of the 2-D video, robust transmission of texture video and depth map is a more challenging problem. In this project, we will concentrate our efforts on improving the error resilience performance of MVD based 3-D video in packet loss scenarios. The research mainly involves two aspects: one is to develop rate-distortion optimized error-resilient MVD coding algorithms at the encoder to strike balance between coding efficiency and error robustness, and another is to design efficient error concealment strategy at the decoder to mask the effect of residual transmission errors in the context of MVD videos. (2) Jul Jan. 2013: Major Investigator in the National Natural Science Foundation of China under No Research Topic: Research on key technologies of error control in a new distributed multi-view video coding framework. Motivations and Contributions: Video transmission over packet-switched networks usually suffers from packet losses. The use of the prediction loop in video coding will cause these errors to propagate to subsequent frames, and thus significantly impacts on the received video quality. With the increasing number of cameras to capture the scene, robustly delivering multi-view 3-D video over error-prone channels becomes a rather challenging task. Thanks to recent development of distributed video coding, this project aims to proposes two alternative error-resilient schemes for multi-view video transmission based on Wyner-Ziv (WZ) coding technique, which are referred to as lightweight encoder error-resilient (LEER) scheme and complex encoder error-resilient (CEER) scheme, respectively. LEER suggests no communications is required between the cameras at the encoder, while the temporal and inter-view redundancy can be explored at the decoder. This intrinsic joint source-channel coding scheme is hence well suited for the applications such as low power sensor networks, multi-view wireless surveillance, and mobile communications devices. CEER refers to that employs an auxiliary redundant stream encoded according to WZ coding principle, to protect a primary stream encoded with standard multi-view video coding codec. This type of architecture is typically suited for the applications where the video is encoded once and decoded many times, such as broadcasting or video-on-demand. (3) Jul Jan. 2013: Participate in the National Natural Science Foundation of China under No

5 Research Topic: Perception-oriented stereoscopic 3-D video coding based on Just-Noticeable-Distortion (JND) profile. Motivations and Contributions: Just Noticeable Distortion (JND) is a promising way to model the perceptual redundancy, which accounts for the maximum distortion threshold that human visual system (HVS) does not perceive. Many HVS features, such as luminance, texture, and temporal masking, have been utilized to determine the JND models. However, all the JND models are built for mono-video, which are incompetent for discarding the stereoscopic perceptual redundancy. The research of this project will focus on efficient stereoscopic perceptual video coding based on a new image-domain JND models. The proposed scheme in this project will firstly establish a foveation-weighting JND model based on the viewing position of the parallax barrier auto-stereoscopic display. Then, in order to improve the stereoscopic coding efficiency, the foveation-weighting JND model can be incorporated into a block-adaptive residue preprocessing method to reduce the unnecessary perceptual redundancy. (4) Jul Mar. 2011: Participate in the cutting-edge project of industry. Project Topic: Compatibility testing of H.264/AVC video codec for highway video surveillance. Motivations and Contributions: This project mainly focuses on testing whether the H.264/AVC encoders of different companies can be interoperable/compatible with each other or not in highway video networking surveillance. We are responsible for setting universal video encoding and decoding parameters (i.e., profile and level) for various companies to generate a conforming bitstream. We also develop some visualisation softwares to identify that the real products from various companies can meet the requirement or not.
