2 LR MATHS SET 4 GUIDE ORANGE AW_Layout 1 05/09/ :19 Page 2 Introduction The Maths Comprehension Card Set is a collection of 60 progressively difficult stories that encourage students to apply their knowledge to real-life situations. Designed for use with individual year groups, each set covers all the key learning areas of maths, ensuring students develop problem solving skills across the subject. For ease of use, each learning area has been colour coded. The set includes non-fiction and fiction stories to engage students with varied interests and learning styles. Each story features six multiple-choice questions for students to answer after reading the stories. Some cards feature tables, graphs and charts for students to read. Others feature photographs to aid comprehension. Encourage students to select the equipment they may need to help solve the problem. Some can be worked through mentally; others may need a pencil and paper or calculator. The set is designed to provide supplemental learning activities to a lesson programme and can be used in a whole-class, small group or individual basis. Activities match the new curriculum for Year 6; progressing in difficulty from card one upwards. Use the story cards individually or photocopy them for small-group or whole-class reading activities. The student answer-sheet template card can be used to track answers and scores. Make enough copies of the answer sheet for students to work independently. The answer sheet includes an area for students to create their own questions to extend comprehension and problem solving skills. These questions will vary and should be marked subjectively. Note: For multiple uses of each card, always use a wet-erase marker. To ensure that your marker doesn t leave a permanent mark, test it on the corner of a card. Use a damp cloth to remove marks. Cards will warp if saturated with water.

Card 7: If necessary, remind children that water freezes at 0. Card 9: When answering question 3, children should notice that the sides of the crest slope and so the vertical height of the crest will be less than 2 the length of one side. Understanding this will also help children to answer question 5 (which uses the fact that the width of the crest will be less than 3 the length of one side). Card 14: To answer question 6, children recognise that the number of fruit is now 27. Card 15: To answer question 6, children recognise that 400 g is 4/5 of 500 g. Card 16: To answer question 6, children recognise that they re looking for a number that is 1 more than a multiple of = 30. Card 20: To answer question 3, remind children: circumference of a circle = π d, where d = diameter. Card 21: To answer question 6, children use the facts that the number eaten is a factor of 15 and that there were at least 32 grapes ( ) at the start. Card 22: Ensure that children realise that because Aunt Sophia also wants to go go-karting, then they must work out the cost of the trip for a child and an adult. Card 23: When answering question 4, children should remember that equilateral triangles have sides that are all the same length. Therefore, the biscuits that were equilateral triangles still have two sides that are the same length making them isosceles triangles. Card 27: Tell children that they might find it helpful to sketch diagrams to help them answer the questions. Card 33: To answer question 2, children find the height of the model car, which is the same height as Jem. Card 34: For questions 5 and 6, encourage the children to use trial and error, and to record their results systematically. Card 37: To answer questions 3 to 6, children realise that Margery s cake is for 25 people and Edith s cake is for 9 people. Card 38: If necessary, remind children that 1 litre = 1000 ml. Card 42: When answering the questions, children check the number that the players had been on earlier in order to work out what the next common multiple must be. Card 50: To answer question 6, children subtract the width of the 29 posts from the side length and then divide the answer by 28 (the number of spaces between the posts).
