2 R&S TS6300 ILS Test System At a glance The R&S TS6300 is a modular ILS test system intended to perform ILS ground measurements at airports with CAT I III runways. ICAO standards (ICAO Annex 10 and Doc. 8071) require that ILS ground measurements be performed at regular intervals. These measurements provide test engineers working at air-traffic control (ATC) authorities with important information that can be used to perform preventive as well as corrective maintenance of transmitting systems. The R&S EVS300 ILS/VOR analyzer lies at the heart of the R&S TS6300. This analyzer offers outstanding performance, which makes it ideal for carrying out dynamic measurements. In particular, the very high measurement rate of 100 Hz (100 complete data records per second, each containing more than 50 different values) makes it possible to separately determine and analyze Course and Clearance in a single measurement. Integration and allocation of the GPS data to each measured data record opens up previously unimagined possibilities in the field of signal analysis. The R&S ILSChecker software was developed in cooperation with the Swiss SKYGUIDE organization. The software is used to control the R&S EVS300 and is based on an elaborate concept that stems from real-world practice (Swiss Air Navigation Services). The software has been thoroughly tested by SKYGUIDE and fulfills all the requirements of the ICAO standards. The system is rounded out by a laptop for measured data acquisition, a GPS receiver, and GPS and ILS antennas. The system can be integrated into a vehicle together with a mast. A telescopic mast for Glide Path measurements is available as an option. The complete system is extremely easy to operate and offers very high measurement reproducibility. Test vehicle with mast. 4 Configurable, mobile automatic test solution for ILS ground measurements R&S EVS300 as test instrument for highly precise level and modulation measurements The R&S EVS300 ILS/VOR analyzer is a portable level and modulation analyzer designed especially for the startup, testing and maintenance of ILS systems. Due to its high measurement speed of 100 measurements per second, easy correlation of measured values with the GPS positions, and digital separation of the Course and Clearance signal components, it is ideally suited for mobile measurements. The R&S EVS300 is the first test receiver for ILS/VOR signals that meets the requirements for ground measurements as well as for flight inspection systems. This means that results from ground- and air-based measurements are now directly comparable, as is recommended in ICAO Doc For more information and specifications, see the R&S EVS300 data sheet and product brochure at: www2.rohde-schwarz.com/product/evs300.html R&S ILSChecker software for data acquisition, visualization and analysis The R&S ILSChecker software is a Windows-based application providing measured data acquisition, graphical display of results including ICAO filtering, and special analysis capabilities. Prior to starting a measurement, the R&S EVS300 is initialized in the Maintenance menu in order to set the receive channel and the test parameters. A reference trace can be loaded to allow comparison with prior measurements. After these initial steps, the system is fully prepared to start the actual measurement. Display of raw data and of data filtered in accordance with ICAO specifications. The raw data as well as the filtered data can be graphically presented in addition to the reference trace even during the running measurement. At the same time, other important values can be displayed such as the minimum, maximum and average DDM, SDM and RF level, and the Course/ Clearance ratio (averaged COU/CLR ratio along the runway). On completion of the measurement, the data is stored and made available for further analysis. Analysis can be performed in the test vehicle with the same computer that is used for data acquisition, or subsequently in the lab using a free copy of the R&S ILSChecker software (reader version). The GPS Data window provides all the values derived from the GPS data such as latitude/longitude, speed, X/Y display (the local reference system is harmonized with the flight inspection data: origin at the threshold, X axis parallel to runway, Y axis perpendicular to runway, and height above threshold). 5 In the Analysis window, it is possible to carry out more detailed analyses such as a comparison of the filtered Course and Clearance DDM, SDM and level values, or a comparison of the Course only, Clearance only and Course + Clearance signals. If the Localizer Coverage and Localizer Linearity Coverage measurements (orbit measurements about the localizer antenna) cannot be performed on a circle, the Analysis window can be used in conjunction with the Compensated Field function to compute and display the compensated localizer antenna pattern. The R&S ILSChecker software takes into account and compensates for the changes in the distances between the localizer antenna and the test vehicle. Antennas for ILS and VOR measurements (LOC R&S HF108, LOC/GS R&S EVS-Z3) and for GPS R&S HF108 (108 MHz to 118 MHz) The R&S HF108 is a VHF/UHF test antenna for horizontally polarized signals. It is suitable for ILS and VOR ground measurements. R&S EVS-Z3 The lightweight design and compact size of the R&S EVS-Z3 ILS/VOR dipole antenna make it ideal for mobile measurements in the field. The option comes with two sets of rods of different lengths to support the two frequency ranges (localizer and glide path). The telescopic mast can be extended to 3.1 m. For GPS, various antenna solutions exist. One example would be an active low profile GPS/GLONASS antenna with a waterproof housing. Modular system configuration from laptop to test vehicle The R&S TS6300 is a highly modular ILS test system. For example, the vehicle type and the laptop are not specified and can be selected according to user's requirements. 6 Fast and highly precise execution of all ICAO-stipulated measurements Localizer Course Structure Signal measurement along the center line of the runway is one of the most important measurements in determining the quality of an ILS transmitting system. The results of this measurement are used to verify the specified runway category (CAT I CAT III b). The use of the R&S EVS300 enables highly reproducible measurements, making it simple to perform comparisons with reference measurements and detect any changes in measured values. The parameters needed for ICAO filtering of the DDM values are automatically matched to the speed of the test vehicle using the available GPS information. The required measurements are performed, and the results are displayed during the running measurement. Using highly accurate RTK-GPS (2 cm accuracy, with a reference station as used in flight inspection systems), the R&S ILSChecker software also makes it possible to compensate for the positioning error of the test vehicle. Moreover, it is possible to verify the course alarms as with flight inspection systems (with alarm conditions of 90 Hz and 150 Hz). The corresponding values are automatically computed and displayed. Comparison of multiple course measurements. Localizer Coverage The Localizer Coverage measurement corresponds to recording the antenna pattern for the complete localizer antenna. Normally, Localizer Coverage measurements must be made in a sector of ± 35 about the antenna in order to maintain uniform level conditions. Here, the R&S ILSChecker software offers a significant simplification of the measurement procedure. Using the GPS information and thus the known distance to the antenna, the recorded level can be compensated afterwards to simulate a measurement on an ideal semicircle. 7 Localizer Linearity Coverage The linearity of the DDM values in the course sector (typically approx. ± 5 about the runway center line) is a quality criterion for the localizer transmitting system. Determining the width of the quarter sectors plays an important role here. Based on the slope of the trace representing the averaged DDM values, the R&S ILSChecker software automatically computes the two quarter sector widths in the 90 Hz and 150 Hz sectors. The Linearity Coverage mode also allows checking the transition zone between Course and Clearance. As with flight inspection systems, it is possible to check and measure the width alarms (with narrow and wide alarm conditions). The corresponding values are automatically computed and displayed. Glide Path Coverage The Glide Path measurement is performed on the ground usually with a mobile mast that is set up at a defined test point (normally at the threshold) at a fixed distance from the transmitting antenna. The mast is extended during the measurement, and the field of the glide path is traversed. This measurement allows the glide slope to be determined, among other parameters. 8 Reliability and efficiency for regular ILS system verifications Very high reproducibility of measurements The R&S EVS300 delivers highly accurate level and modulation results and thereby enables high reproducibility for all measurements. Comparisons between current measurements and reference measurements are simple and efficient to perform. Simple verification and traceability of changes in the ILS signal Large reflectors (e.g. the tail units of large planes on taxiways, buildings at the airport, cranes) can produce undesirable distortion of the ILS signal and thereby impact the safety of aircraft during landing. The R&S ILSChecker software allows optimized comparison of all prior measurements with current measurement results. This makes it easy to verify and date any changes of the signal in the air. The software provides the ability to include comments with each measurement, and thus facilitates documentation of temporary events that cause changes in the signal. Detailed measurement analysis in the lab In many cases, the time window available for carrying out the required measurements is very small. Detailed analysis of results, therefore, has to take place subsequently in the lab. A license-free reader version of the R&S ILSChecker software is available to perform laboratory analysis. The R&S ILSChecker Analysis window offers various features for subsequent signal evaluation (e.g. Compensated Field, Course only/clearance only/course + Clearance, raw/ filtered data, zoom). Cost savings through simple "one-man" operation Using the R&S TS6300, it is possible for a single test technician to perform all required measurements in the test vehicle. Once the test procedure is prepared and launched, the test engineer can concentrate on driving the vehicle since no more manual intervention is required. 8
