The two highlights are the EMC class B display and the latest generation of our fine pitch series. The EMC class B display was especially developed for public transportation with particularly high EMC requirements and is unique so far. It fulfils the stricter EMC requirements of EN55032 Class B, the European product standards for multimedia equipment. Furthermore, the controlling is carried out by our own controlling system. The first two airport displays were just put into operation successfully at Stockholm s airport. The latest generation of our fine pitch series is lighter, thinner and more flexible. As usual with S[quadrat], the single LED modules can be installed as individual LED display systems. What is new, are pre-configured HD displays with a minimum pixel pitch of 1.2 mm. There is a standard solution with a HD resolution for each pixel pitch, either as wallmount or free-standing with an elegant stand. Since S[quadrat] has become a subsidiary of NEC Display Solutions Europe GmbH, at the NEC booth 5-R20 several S[quadrat] LED systems will be presented, too. 4 TRANSPORTATION Stockholm Arlanda Airport Gigant LED screens for perfect passenger experience Stockholm Arlanda Airport 2 x SI [3.9 SMD] NT V4 EMC Class B LED video displays / 56 m² / Sweden Swedavia, the company that owns Sweden s 10 major airports, commissioned NEC to provide giant LED screens in the check-in and baggage reclaim areas, so it could provide passengers with travel information and updates, advertising, promotions and other content. At 44 and 15 square metres respectively, these wall-sized screens provide attention-grabbing, ultra-bright visuals, keeping passengers informed and updated while also providing major new revenue and advertising opportunities. Swedavia had specific requirements for the project, of which the most important was that the entire screens not only the individual modules should meet EMC Class B so that they did not cause an interference with other communications systems and devices in the terminal, or elsewhere in the airport. NEC engineered two 3.91 mm direct view LED screens with special shielding so that they emitted negligible levels of electromagnetic radiation. NEC was responsible for every aspect of the project, from designing the modules, providing the power and data, manufacturing, installing and commissioning. The company also provided a back-end platform that enables Stockholm Arlanda Airport to compile and manage content from multiple sources for the screens into a single application. After a period of robust testing, during which both screens passed the EMC criteria with flying colours, the giant screens were unveiled last month and are now fully operational. 6 S[QUADRAT] NEWS EMC Class B display superior EMC performance for public LED displays Internet of things, artificial intelligence, high bandwidth applications the world gets faster and connected. Besides all benefits there are many challenges to keep these electronic systems up and running. One of them is managing interference with other electronic systems, objective to avoid malfunction and breakdowns due to interference. In public transport, where breakdowns impact safety for life and health of passengers, avoiding interference is the prime directive. Regulation authorities around the world released standards to define requirements for electronic systems with respect to their radio emissions and their susceptibility for incoming radiation, i.e. radio frequencies. LED systems, like our SI [3.9 SMD] EMC Class B NT V4, underly CE regulations in European Community that require to follow the EN55032 to get market access. This standard defines maximum levels of radio frequency emissions a system may generate. These limits are hard to keep, for our competitors and for us. Technically this could be understood, as many million LEDs (and its inherent electrical power) in a big screen have to be switched at fast speed. Any switching process will emit radio frequency, so simplified many switching processes will generate a lot of radio frequency energy. Swedish airports operator, Swedavia, received two of S[quadrat] s SI [3.9 SMD] EMC Class B NT V4 LED display systems for their Arlanda (Stockholm) Airport in November These displays provide superior EMC performance of EN55032 Class B. I d like to point out that we proof the EMC class B emissions at full screen size of 20.5 m x 2 m, equals 41 m². Competitors offering class B products often show EMC reports for one module (assume 0.5 m² size) just keeping the limits with low margin, but how will a LED screen of 40 m² perform? The answer is not easy as adding two figures, but as easy as more screen area is more radiation. So, the only way to proof performance is do a measurement at full size, and we did. Emission measurement is difficult to arrange, as most EMC labs provide 10 m-anechoic chambers, where a display that size won t fit in. So, we did a 2-stage process: we qualified a 5 m x 2 m display in a lab, then the full display in a free field measurement to verify still keeping the limits. See lab measurements range 30 MHz up to 6 GHz, providing good margin at 10 m² screen size. Stage two measure ments for 40 m² in our factory (i.e. no anechoic, shielded chamber) proofed the superior performance. The emissions violating the limits (see screen shot) were 100 % identified to be from external environment. So, the system is keeping class B requirements at 41 m². What s the customers benefit, aside from being compliant to regulatory requirements? SI [3.9 SMD] EMC Class B NT V4 will not emit critical RF to infer with airports infrastructure and security systems, which will ensure hassle-free operations. A value of its own. 7 RETAIL Karstadt Gropius Passage, Berlin Video walls for brilliant coloured promotions Karstadt Warenhaus GmbH opened at Gropius Passagen in Berlin its first digital branch at the end of October As a leading provider of InStore solutions for the fashion and lifestyle products, Bütema AG was commissioned to equip the store with digital technologies. Seventeen NEC 23-inch displays placed at product counters promoting special offers, as well as complementary articles at central points in the store. The highlights in the digital equipped 7900 square meter branch are the two LED walls in the shop window and in the shopping centre itself, which we have implemented together with S[quadrat]. Karstadt has set high standards for the two video walls. Pedestrian and shopping centre visitors should be informed about current offers and promotions, the displays should have at least a brightness of 1000 cd/m² and a continuous image without individual monitors. Therefore, the decision was made to install a LED solution. S[quadrat] s SI NT Slim series with a pixel pitch of 4.0 mm and a resolution of 1120 x 640 pixels, as well as a net weight of kg offered the best choice. The freestanding 16: 9 wall in the shop window has an area of sqm and weighs kg at (W/H) 4.48 x 2.56 m. 112 LED modules were installed there. Each one is only 33 mm deep. The cramped space in the shop window, as well as the fact that the shop window is located in a round arch, brought with it special challenges. Thanks to the excellent cooperation with the NEC team, the project could be implemented perfectly despite the short turnaround time and immense time pressure. 8 TRANSPORTATION Eurotransit Terminal, Kazakhstan Temperature control and comfortable on/off switching It is becoming increasingly important for the continuous and fault-free operation of LED displays to monitor the operation temperature of all electronic components and inform about abnormal operation conditions in a decentralised way. S[quadrat] GmbH has equipped its 38 LED video displays at the Eurotransit Terminal in Kazakhstan with its selfdeveloped, proven warning system SX[TempControl], its connect & disconnect system SX[On/Off] and display heating. Thus S[quadrat] provides reliable security and high quality standards. The temperatures will be shown by some kind of traffic light application within the rack and in the software in the control room. The temperature monitoring contains two temperature areas: one for little excess temperature which triggers a graphic warning and a signal tone, and one for high excess which shuts down the entire system. Then the power supply of the display will be immediately disconnected full-automatically. The disconnection of the whole power supply in the sub-distribution stops the energy supply and reduces the risk of a smouldering fire or the excess of the fire. SX[TempControl] - The timely alarming and warning as soon as the temperature is out of the normal SX[On/Off] The deducted panel provides a secure range provides reliable fire protection and also ensures the protection of sensitive semi-conductors, video displays from their main supplies. 9 DESIGN Royal Opera House, London Display solutions for a brighter artistic experience Perfectly and uniquely positioned to offer a broad range of visual technologies including LED, LCD and Projection; NEC was chosen to be the Display Technology Partner for the ROH to specify and install the perfect fit solution across a range of applications within the venue. The NEC global strap line Orchestrating a Brighter Future neatly resonates with the goals and objectives of the ROH and the Open Up project. Partnering with NEC Display Solutions, the ROH brings to life its modern and inclusive approach through a range of visual technologies including large format displays and projection solutions plus a striking 90 degree curved LED showpiece. The original design specified 2 x HD controllers with content synchronized by a Scala media player, however, this has been replaced by a single 4K controller making content creation simpler, guaranteeing perfect synchronization and achieving significant cost savings over the life time of the display. Anticipating 4K to be the standard resolution in the near future, the ROH is benefiting from the futureproof flexibility of this system design. The design of the new Piazza entrance allowed only a very tight space for the installation of the LED modules; the glass frontage and revolving door were installed prior to the display. With less than 800mm space at its narrowest, a traditional ladder system was needed to install the frame and modules and a gantry and scaffolding required above the revolving door for access. Special LED modules were designed to create the 90 degree curvature four modules wide. 10 CORPORATE MVV Central, Mannheim Brilliant colors high above the city of Mannheim S[quadrat] GmbH installed two LED video displays at the MVV skyscraper directly below the roof edge of the 16-storey building in the central of Mannheim, Germany. Each display consists of LED stripes with a pixel pitch of 16 mm and has a dimension of 21 m width and 7 m height. The first display was officially opened on Friday, 14th December, Many MVV employees and interested people came to attend the commissioning. The management board and works council chairman of MVV, as well as the Mayor of Mannheim, pressed a red button and the first message shined: Hallo Mannheim. Both nearly 150 m² LED displays are equipped with modern, energy-efficient technology. The brightness is adjusted to the actual light conditions, so that the contents are clearly visible during the day, while at night neither the traffic nor the residents are affected. The displays show the MVV logo, news from Mannheim and the region, information, weather forecasts, time and date. To realize this great project S[quadrat] worked closely together with the LED experts of MVV and the AV company epicto GmbH. 13 SPORT Circuit Paul Ricard, Le Castellet High LED Performance for the reopened race track S[quadrat] GmbH delivered four fix installed LED video displays for the renewed Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, South France. On 24th June, 2018 the first Formula 1 race took place after 28 years. The two 21 m² screens will show live broadcasts and advertisement. Two vertically aligned, 6 m high LED bars will display racing information like positions and the number of labs. S[quadrat] mounted the four displays at a 15 m high, specially made pylon. The maintenance levels are located in the inside of the pylon. Therefore, all displays can be maintained from the backside. The displays consist of SMD LEDs with a pixel pitch of 10 mm. There is a high level of homogeneity and a wider viewing angle due to the usage of SMDs. The drivers who pass the screens have a much better view in comparison to traditional DIP LEDs. Extra-long shaders, developed by S[quadrat] specially to increase the shock resistance of its outdoor displays, protect the diodes at the race track well against the strong sunlight. Additionally, they improve the contrast. S[quadrat] s SX[Brightness- Control] regulates the brightness of the displays automatically according to the current light conditions.
