Installation Guide Hardware and Software DM Series Digital Processors models DM1624, DM1612, DM812 LECTROSONICS, INC. 1
Installation Specific Information Only This guide covers only installation related matters. See the Reference Guide additional details and explanations of the DM Series digital processors. Unpack the unit and inspect the contents Included in the box: Reference Manual Power cable 5pin depluggable connectors: 20 each for the DM each for the DM each for the DM812 CAT5e cables (2 each) 12" with shielded RJ45 connectors Lectrosonics screwdriver DB9 to TRS (Stereo mini) cable BLACK for laptop setup DB9 to TRS (Stereo mini) cable RED for touch panel control systems USB cable CDROM with LecNet2 software and documentation in Acrobat PDF files Remove all packaging and make certain all the above materials are enclosed in the box. If not, IMMEDIATELY call to report the missing components so we can get any needed replacements on their way to you. Ask for anyone in sales or service. Installing the hardware into the rack The DM1624 and DM1612 occupy two rack spaces. The DM812 occupies a single space. There are no special ventilation requirements. Mount with 4 rack screws in the appropriate mounting holes We recommend using nylon washers to prevent damage to the finish when tightening the screws. Power is connected via the included IEC power cable. DM processors have internal switching power supplies that can tolerate voltages from VAC. Use an approved power cable for installations outside the United States. Cabling We recommend using lacing bars for strain relief when mounting in a rack. Use professional audio cable with proper shielding two conductor plus ground/shield. Audio connections The analog audio inputs and outputs are connected through 5 pin depluggable connectors. Strip the insulation back only 1/8 to 3/16" and do not tin (apply solder to) the leads. When tightening the connector do not over tighten and do not leave more than 1mm of exposed wire beyond the edge of the connector. Note the labeling on the unit for the positive and negative leads. Ground is shared between two connections (the center pin). For balanced connections, all three leads can be connected. The DM1624 does not have a pin 1 problem. Unbalanced and balanced input connections use the following guidelines. Audio inputs Unbalanced sources (positive and ground) such as consumer VCR s, DVD players, etc. Positive to the input. Shield or negative to and a jumper to ground. DO NOT ACTIVATE PHANTOM POWER FOR UNBALANCED SOURCES!! Some outputs include an attenuator to reduce the signal to mic level. Wiring is the same for either line or mic level, as indicated in the following illustrations. NOTE: USING A PUT WITH THE DIGITAL ATTENUATION APPLIED WITH THE CONTROL PANEL TO ACHIEVE MIC LEVEL WILL RESULT IN ADDED NOISE Use the outputs marked as MIC/PUTS for mic level applications. Using the other outputs marked LINE OUTPUTS with control panel attenuation can result in up to 40 db off additional noise. When the DM output is connected to a balanced input, wire it as indicated in this illustration. Select Mic or Line either from the front panel LCD interface or via the software GUI. 4 Programmable Inputs Programmable inputs are provided to enable control over a variety of parameters. Each input can respond to either a contact closure or a continuous voltage. The diagram below shows common connections to the programmable input pins. Each programmable input is internally pulled up through a 100K resistor to 5V, so no external pull up resistors are necessary. When using a continuous voltage with one of the programmable inputs, the Function of the programmable input must be set to either Analog In Control or Analog Out Control on the Programmable Inputs control tab in the GUI. See the Programmable Input tab in the Control Panel software for setting all programmable input parameters. Programmable Outputs Programmable outputs are used to indicate either channel activity or the current state of a programmable input. Each programmable output is the electrical equivalent of a contact closure to ground. When a programmable output is active, it conducts current to ground. When the programmable output is inactive, no current flows to ground. The maximum usable voltage for the programmable outputs is 40V, and they will safely conduct up to 100mADC continuous. The diagram on the right shows some typical uses for the programmable outputs. It is permissible to run LEDs from the 5VDC pins on the programmable input connector, as long as the total LED current for all LEDS on does not exceed 100mA. Similarly, 5V relay coils may also be run from the 5VDC pins on the programmable input connector, as long as the total coil current for all relays on does not exceed 100mA. Note that the diagram shows an external DC source powering the relay coil. This will be necessary if coil voltages above 5V are needed Pot Connection for Analog Control of Gain 10K Linear Pot CW 5V To Programmable Input Pin Gnd LED is on when the programmable output is active 5VDC (from Programmable Input Pins 14, 17, 20 or 23) 380 Ohms Programmable Output Pin Contact Closure as Programmable Input To Programmable Input Pin Gnd DC Voltage Source as Programmable Input To Programmable Input Pin 0VDC (Off) to 5VDC (On) Gnd Programmable Input Connections LED is off when the programmable output is active Programmable Output Pin Gnd (from Programmable Output Pins 15, 17, 19, 21, 23 or 25) Relay is on when the programmable output is active Relay Coil Coil current <100mA Programmable Output Pin Gnd (from Programmable Output Pins 15, 17, 19, 21, 23 or 25) 1N4001 or equiv. 8 Installing LecNet2 Software and USB Driver This Graphical User Interface (GUI) is designed to allow easy setup and monitoring of DM components using a computer system running under the Windows 2000 or XP operating system. Installing LecNet2 Software 1. Use the computer control panel to remove any previously installed versions of LecNet2 software. (This will ensure you are using the latest release.) 2. Insert the LecNet2 program disk supplied with the Venue Receiver into the CDROM drive on the computer system that will be used to set up and control the Venue Receiver. 3. The CD should automatically start the installation procedure. If it doesn't, click "Start" on the WIndows Task Bar then click "Run..." Enter the Drive number followed by "Setup.exe" as shown below. First time installation When a Lecnet2 device is connected to the PC for the very first time, the Windows Found New Hardware Wizard automatically opens. Use the following procedure to install the Lecnet2 USB driver using the Wizard. 1. Place the Lecnet2 Installation Disk in the PC s CDROM drive. 2. On the first page of the Wizard, select the option Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and click Next> to continue to the next page. 3. Select "Search for the best driver in these locations", then check the box for "Search removable media (floppy, CDROM...)" and click Next> to continue to the next page.. 4. Follow the onscreen instructions to install the LecNet2 software. Installing the LecNet2 USB Driver There are two methods of connecting a WIndows based computer system to the DM component, either via a USB cable or an RS232 cable. Although the USB port offers significantly increased speed and convenience over standard RS232 links, it does require the installation of a LecNet2 USB driver. The LecNet2 USB driver is not part of the standard Windows 2000 and XP driver libraries. As a result, connecting a computer system to the DM for the first time is different than subsequent installations. There are a few minor differences between installing the LecNet2 USB drivers on a Windows 2000 versus a Windows XP system. USB driver installation Windows XP) When the DM is connected to a Windows XP computer system for the very first time, the Windows "New Hardware Found Wizard" automatically opens. 4. Windows will search the CD for the driver and when it has found it, it is likely that a dialog will open warning you that the driver has not passed Windows Logo Testing. This is OK, click Continue Anyway. (see top of next page) 8
5. When the driver installation is complete, the final page of the Wizard appears. Click 1. On the first page of the Wizard, select Install the software automatically (Recommended) and click Next> to continue. 2. Windows will discover the previously installed driver and it is likely that a dialog will open warning you that the driver has not passed Windows Logo Testing. Click Continue Anyway. Finish to complete the Lecnet2 USB driver installation. Installation additional units (or Lecnet 2 devices) The Windows XP operating system regards all Lecnet2 devices as separate USB devices because each has a unique serial number. Because of this, Windows XP will want to install the USB driver every time it encounters a Lecnet 2 device whose serial number it does not recognize. However, if the Lecnet 2 USB driver has already been installed at least once before on the computer system, the process is simplified because the Lecnet 2 installation disk is not required. Use the following procedure if the LecNet 2 USB driver was previously installed on the computer system. 3. When the driver installation is complete, the final page of the Wizard appears. Click Finish. It is now possible to connect to the Lecnet2 device. 9
USB Driver Installation (Windows 2000) First Time Installation When a Lecnet2 device is connected to the PC for the very first time, the Windows Found New Hardware Wizard automatically opens. Use the following procedure to install the Lecnet2 USB driver using the Wizard. 1. Connect a cable between the DM processor USB port and the computer system. Place the Lecnet2 Installation Disk in the PC s CD ROM drive and click "Next>" to display the next page. 2. Select "Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended)" and click "Next>" to continue to the next page. 3. Check only "CDROM drives" then click Next> to search the LecNet 2 CD for the USB driver. When it is found, the Lecnet 2 device name will be displayed. Click Next> to install the driver. 10
Initial Setup Connect your computer using either the BLACK DB9 to stereo mini (TRS 1/8 ) cable for RS232 communications OR the USB cable for USB control. Multiple units may be connected using a USB hub (available at most electronic or office supply retailers). Both cables are included with the unit. Select Start Select LecNet2 Select DM1624 Control Panel The control panel will start with a connection reminder Click on OK. HINT 2 The right click is powerful in this interface. You can activate quick access to a number of setup functions (for example right click in any input box in the INPUTS tab ). It also allows some powerful cut and paste capabilities especially in the matrix setup and the filter (both input and output). Hint #3 Presets will take about 4 seconds to switch due to the many parameters in the unit audio will switch off temporarily during a preset switch to avoid feedback. If you need quicker response with no interruption to the audio, use macros instead try using the macro recorder for making any changes. The only changes that cannot be made in a macro are filter adjustments such as EQ. IMPORTANT The minimum required setup is necessary before the DM processor will pass audio: Inputs Setup Matrix Setup Outputs Setup Select CONNECT on the banner menu at the top of the control panel screen. Select the type of connection you are using. Your choices are COM ports (serial), Network, USB or Extron IPL T S. Upon connection you will be able to program and setup the DM1624. See the help files in the software for more complete instructions. HINT 1 The GUI interface is quite intuitive. As a recommended first step, we suggest you select Labels from the Menu Bar and type in all the input and output labels. This will simplify further setup steps because you will be able to easily keep track of which input or output you are adjusting. The minimum setup can also be accomplished using the front panel LCD interface. IMPORTANT ANY CHANGES MADE DURING SETUP MUST BE SAVED IN THE UNIT VIA THE PRESET MENU!!! Click on Preset, then click on STORE SETTINGS TO DEVICE MEMORY AS..., then select the preset where you you would like to store the settings you have created. You can also set that preset as the default, so when the unit powers up, it goes to that preset. Do this after any changes (not before). For direct support from the factory, call Ask for anyone is the SALES department. They will be able to answer your setup and/or technical questions or will get the correct person who can help on the phone. 11
