1.0 Introduction 1.1 The 3M Fiber Optic Wall Mount Enclosures 8430 Series are designed to provide the essential interface between fiber optic cables or between optical equipment installed on the customer s premises. The units offer networking and fiber distribution from the vault, wiring closet or any suitable internal wall to the user s terminal equipment. Three units are available: a) The 8432 enclosure is configured to accommodate 2 single slot adapter plates or modules. b) The 8434 enclosure is configured to accommodate 4 single slot adapter plates or modules. The 8434 enclosure can also accommodate 2 two-slot modules. c) The 8436 enclosure is configured to accommodate 6 single slot adapter plates or modules. The 8434 enclosure can also accommodate 2 three-slot modules The enclosures can also be used as breakout boxes for a building riser fiber cable to distribute fiber cable to each floor. Tight buffered cable must be used in this application. The enclosures can also be used as splice-through boxes to house splices in a wiring closet. The enclosures are divided into two separate patch panel sections for security. The left side is used for the riser or outside plant cables entering the building, pigtails and pigtail splices. The right side is used for internal cable assembly networking. There is a separate door on each side. Each door is secured with a quarter turn latch. Each door may be locked separately with a padlock for security. Because of this feature, the enclosure may also be used as a fiber interface between a common carrier and its customer. Adapter plates, complete with the adapters (couplings), and pre-terminated modules are purchased separately as enclosures are sold empty. 1.2 Definitions of terms used herein: An adapter (coupling) is a device that is used to couple two fiber connectors together. This is firmly mounted into the adapter plate of the enclosure (fiber distribution unit). The connector is the device mounted on the end of the fiber which is plugged into the adapter to create a semipermanent or remateable lightwave path between two fiber ends. The field fiber will terminate in a connector through a pigtail or by direct termination on the fiber. DANGER: Fiber ends and unmated connectors may emit invisible laser/led radiation. Avoid direct eye exposure to the beam. Do not inspect active fibers with magnifying instruments A 3

Slide the cable clamp through the tab nearest to the desired cable entry slot. 3.2 Attach the strength member clamp: Use the nut, bolt and washer to attach the strength member clamp to the enclosure at the entry port nearest the cable clamp. Insert the bolt from the back side. 3.3 Ready the splice chamber: Install the fiber clips if needed, according to the sketches. Install the splice organizer if used. Peel off the smooth protective cover on the bottom. Firmly press sticky side onto the proper place in the patch panel as shown in the sketches at the end of this document. 3.4 Install the adapter plates and modules: Adapter plates are ordered separately. Align adapter plate or module mounting pins at desired enclosure location. Gently press the plate or module into place. Firmly press mounting pin plunger until a click is felt. Note: Gently pull on plate or module to insure it has been securely attached. A slight amount of movement is normal due to sheet metal thickness variances A 5
4.0 Mounting the 3M Fiber Optic Wall Mount Enclosure The dimensions of the enclosure are: Width Height Depth " / 381 mm 9" / 229 mm 3" / 76 mm " / 381 mm 11" / 279 mm 3" / 76 mm " / 381 mm 18" / 457 mm 3" / 76 mm At least 2" (51 mm) additional space is required on each side to permit opening and removal of the doors. Attach to a plywood wall using the four screws provided. For concrete walls, expansion inserts with wood screws can be used. For sheet rock, Molly Bolts may be used. 5.0 Field Cable Preparation and Placing Note: Leave at least 5' (1.5 m) of field cable slack outside of the unit. In case a fiber is broken inadvertently, the slack allows the cable to be pulled further into the unit. Slack also allows for future rearrangements. 5.1 Prepare the Field Cable: Slit and install the oval cable entry grommet over the end of the field cable. Strip approximately 4' (1.2 m) of the cable s outer sheath(s) exposing the buffer tubes and central strength member. Cut back the central strength member leaving approximately 4 3/4" (12 cm) protruding from the cable s outer sheath. 5.2 Strip all but 2" (51 mm) of the fiber s loose tube: A buffer tube cutter (not furnished) may be used to score the tube around the perimeter. Bend the tube back and forth gently to break it off. Don t cut the tube enough to damage unprotected fibers inside. 5.3 Clean the fibers according to the cable maker s procedures: Note: Carefully follow safety, health, and disposal information on cleaning solvent label or Material Safety Data Sheet. 5.4 Insert the cable into the enclosure entry: Insert the prepared cable and fibers through the oval cable port and position the cable clamp around cable. Insert the central strength member into the central member clamp at the same time. Close the cable clamp onto the cable outer sheath (1/2" (13 mm) from the end of the sheath. Make sure the cable is held in place securely but not tight enough to compress the fibers. Position the grommet in the enclosure entry A
5.5 Secure the central strength member: Tighten the central strength member clamp screw to retain the central strength member. 6.0 Fiber Layout 6.1 If the field fibers are to be directly terminated using field mountable connectors, follow the instructions of the connector manufacturer. 6.2 If the field fibers are to be spliced to pigtails proceed to step Arrange the fiber in the clips. Make as many complete loops as the fiber will allow. Keep the fiber loosely wrapped inside the fiber clips. Cut the fiber so that it reaches the far side of the splice organizer. Note: Fiber layout is at the discretion of the user or installer as long as the minimum bending radius is not violated. Suggested layouts for both the fiber and the pigtails and direct field termination are shown in the sketches A 7
7.0 Pigtail Layout and Splicing 7.1 Select a Pigtail: Use a 3 ft.-3 in. (1 meter) pigtail or cut a 6 ft. 6 in. (2 meter) jumper in half. Put a tag on the pigtail near the connector indicating the number of the fiber in the cable it is to be spliced to. 7.2 Trim the Pigtail to the Correct Length: Holding the connector near the adapter it will be connected to, route the pigtail in the vacant clips. Make as many complete loops as the length of the pigtail will allow. Keep the pigtail loosely wrapped inside the fiber clips. Cut the pigtail so that it reaches the opposite side of the splice organizer. 7.3 Splice the Field Fiber to the Pigtail: The pigtail end and fiber must be stripped and cleaned for the splicing operation. Follow the splicing procedures of the splice manufacturer. The optional splice organizers can store fusion or mechanical splices. When the splice is completed, route field fiber loosely in the fiber clips, and carefully lay the splice in the slot of the organizer. Route the pigtail loosely in the fiber clips and insert the connector as described in step 7.4 below. 7.4 Insert the Connector of the Pigtail into the Connector adapter: Remove the adapter's dust caps and clean the inside with a lint free swab dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Blow with dry air, replace right dust cap. Then remove the dust cap from the corresponding connector. Clean the connector ferrule with a lint free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Blow with dry air. Visually inspect the connector for cleanliness. Insert the connector. Note: Carefully follow safety, health, and disposal information on container label or Material Safety Data Sheet for Isopropyl alcohol being used. 7.5 Perform Steps 7.1 through 7.4 for all remaining fibers and pigtails. 8.0 Routing of the Cable Assemblies 8.1 Select a cable assembly long enough to reach from the patch panel to the specified electronic equipment. Apply tags to both ends of this cable assembly. The tag at each end should show the ultimate location of the other end and the same unique number on both ends. Feed the ends including the dust caps through the top or bottom ports of the enclosure to the optical equipment. If cable assemblies have different types of connectors on each end, be sure that the proper connector is at the patch panel end. Do not insert connectors into equipment at either end until the jumper is secured on the cable racks. Do not remove dust caps from either end of the cable assemblies until immediately prior to connection to the equipment. Secure the cable assemblies in the fiber clips along the right side of the enclosure. Note: Pulling of cable assemblies (jumpers) through enclosed conduit is not advised. The connectors may be damaged or pulled off the fibers. Follow the recommended cable installation procedures of the cable assembly manufacturer to avoid high light loss or breaks. Follow building fire codes when specifying cable jacket materials for the application intended A

3M Fiber Optic Wall Mount Enclosure /48 Port Enclosure (without splice) 9.0 Connection of ST, SC, LC, FC Connectors 9.1 Swivel the Patch Panel s bulkhead: Grasp the left-hand padlock hasp and apply pressure toward the cable side of the housing. This will cause the bulkhead, (or partition) to rotate exposing the front side of the adapters. 9.2 Connect the selected Cable Assembly to the Adapter: Remove the dust cap from patch panel end of the cable assembly. Clean the connector with isopropyl alcohol and blow dry. Inspect for cleanliness. Insert the clean connector into the adapter. If adapters have key slots, be sure to engage the key of the connector in the slot before threading the connector into the coupling. 9.3 Return the Bulkhead to Resting Position: The door for this compartment will not close until the bulkhead has been returned to the normal position A 11
10.0 Securing the Enclosure 10.1 Check fibers, pigtails, and jumpers for possible macrobending Record fiber assignments and termination points on the fiber assignment charts: These charts may be located on the inside of the right and left doors. Use only a permanent marker Install and secure the patch panel doors: The doors are secured with quarter turn latches. Close the doors, align the holes and rotate the latch. Attach a padlock to the hasp if required. Unit is now secured Right Side Cabel Entry (Inverted Mounting) In some circumstances, it may be advantageous to mount the unit in the inverted position to permit right side cable entry. The patch panel is designed to permit mounting in the inverted position with a minor adjustment. The adjustment secures the doors and prevents their removal when the unit is inverted. No additional materials are required. The following procedure secures the doors: 11.1 Open both doors Loosen door stop retainer screws located on the upper right and left corners of the cabinet Rotate metal plates (door stops) 90 degrees to position them against the edge of the upper door hinge Secure retainer screws Rotate the cabinet 180 degrees Install unit. 3M and Fibrlok are trademarks of 3M Company.
