OPERATION - continued USING THE STOP/EJECT KEY The STOP/EJECT key is a dual purpose control. Press the STOP/EJECT key lightly to stop the cassette tape in any mode. 1. Press the STOP/EJECT key until it engages to open the cassette tape compartment lid and eject the tape. USING THE PAUSE KEY Pressing the PAUSE key stops the cassette tape motion during playback or record operation. The PAUSE feature allows you to conveniently edit the tape while recording, or when playing back short segments of tape without leaving the selected mode of operation. 15

OPERATION - continued 1. Press and engage the PAUSE key to stop the tape in record or playback mode. 2. Depress the PAUSE key a second time to resume tape motion. USING THE TAPE COUNTER The tape counter provides easy reference for cassette tape indexing. 1. The tape counter digits can be reset at any time to 000 by pressing the reset button. VU LEVEL MIC USING THE VU/LEVEL LED The VU/LEVEL led will flash during recording mode and if there is a recording on the tape in playback mode. 1. If you are using batteries, the flashing serves to indicate that the batteries are installed properly and are usable for recording and playback. 2. If you are using an AC power adapter instead of batteries, the flashing indicates that the AC power adapter is connected properly. VU LEVE MIC 16

OPERATION - continued USING THE VOLUME CONTROL To listen to your calls, turn the VOLUME control in a counter-clockwise direction to increase the sound level. 1. Adjust the volume control until you have a set comfortable sound level. VOLUME Volume Control CASSETTE TAPE COMPARTMENT Press the STOP/EJECT key partially to open the cassette tape compartment cover. Press the STOP/EJECT key completely to eject the tape. 1. Open the cassette tape compartment cover and insert a blank tape cassette. The exposed tape side of the cassette must be facing toward the front of the unit. 2. Confirm that the cassette tape is properly seated before closing the cassette tape compartment cover. 17

OPERATION - continued USING THE BEEP TONE SWITCH If desired, the VTR-700 can produce a beep tone on the telephone line every 15 seconds during telephone line recording. 1. The BEEP TONE slide switch is located inside the battery compartment. 2. Remove the battery cover and locate the BEEP TONE slide switch. Remove batteries (not included) if previously installed, to provide access to the switch. 3. Set the BEEP TONE switch to the ON position. 4. When the Handset Adapter is used to connect the VTR-700 to your telephone, the beep tone is not heard on the telephone line. 18

OPERATION - continued REMOTE JACK & MIC JACK To record from the telephone line, insert the small prong of the supplied dual pronged telecord into the REMOTE jack and the large prong into the MIC jack. 1. Plug the remaining end of the modular telecord into any modular jack that is connected to the telephone line to be recorded. 2. To use the VTR-700 as a regular tape recorder, remove the dual prong end of the telecord from the REM and MIC jacks. This activates the built-in condenser microphone which is not affected by the volume control setting. 2. To record from an external microphone, plug a single prong external microphone into the MIC jack. DC 6V JACK The DC 6V jack allows the VTR-700 to operate from an external 6 volt power source. MIC TEL EAR DC 6V 300mA OFF ON VOX NORM MONITOR REC MODE STD EXT SPEED 19

OPERATION - continued USING THE EAR JACK An earphone (not included) with a 1 / 8 inch phone plug may be inserted into the EAR jack for private listening ofac powered. MIC TEL EAR DC 6V 300mA OFF ON MONITOR VOX NORM REC MODE STD EXT SPEED USING THE MONITOR SWITCH Set the MONITOR switch to the ON position to listen to a call being automatically recorded. Adjust the VOLUME control to a comfortable sound level. 20

OPERATION - continued 1. If you are a party of the conversation being recorded and located near the VTR-700, do not engage the MONITOR switch unless the VOLUME control is turned to its lowest point. 2. Failure to lower the VOLUME control may cause an audio feedback or squealing sound to occur through your telephone handset. USING THE RECORD MODE SWITCH Place the RECORD MODE switch in the VOX position whenever voice activated recording operation is desired. 1. If voice activated recording is not desired, set the RECORD MODE switch to the NORMAL position. 2. To playback recorded tapes, place the RECORD MODE switch in the NORMAL position. USING THE SPEED SWITCH The dual speed control allows selection of either standard 1-7 / 8 ips or long play 15 / 16 ips tape speeds. 1. The long play speed provides a recording time twice that stated on the cassette. 21

OPERATION - continued 2. For example, a 60 minute cassette tape will record at twice the time or 60 minutes per side for a total of 120 minutes. 3. The long play speed is more economical when recording a conversation where a standard cassette speed would often necessitate the frequent changing of tapes. 4. It is not recommended to use a cassette tape longer than a C-90. The tape used in a C-120 cassette is very thin and may break easily or cause damage to the tape drive mechanism. USING THE L/M/H SENSITIVITY SWITCH The L/M/H SENSITIVITY switch sets the VTR-700 activation sensitivity level so that the tape will start and stop correctly. Set the L/M/H SENSITIVITY switch in the HIGH (H) position. Some telephone lines may have more "line noise" than normally expected. 22

OPERATION - continued 2. If the tape does not stop when 6 to 8 seconds of silence occurs during speaking, or hanging up the telephone, set the L/M/H switch to either the MEDIUM (M) or LOW (L) position. RECORDING USING THE BUILT-IN MICROPHONE The VTR-700 can be used as a regular tape recorder by removing the dual prong end of the telephone line cord from the REM and MIC jacks. This activates the built-in condenser microphone allowing conference and memoranda recording without using an external microphone. The built-in microphone is not affected by the volume control setting. To record from an external microphone, plug a single prong external microphone into the MIC jack. 1. For voice activated recording, set the VOX/NORMAL switch to the VOX position. 3. Depress the tape counter RESET button to reference the beginning of the recording. 4. Press and engage the RECORD button. 5. Speak in a normal tone of voice and the tape should start to move. The tape should stop whenever 6 to 10 seconds of silence occurs. 6. If the tape does not stop with 6 to 10 seconds of silence, the background noise is too high. Set the L/M/H sensitivity switch to the M or L position. 7. If vox activation is not desired, set the VOX/NORMAL switch to the NORMAL position. 23

OPERATION - continued AUTOMATIC RECORDING FROM TELEPHONE LINE To record automatically from the telephone line, confirm that the dual prong telecord is plugged into the VTR-700 REM and MIC jacks. IMPORTANT, DO NOT USE THE VTR-700 ON A PARTY LINE, SINCE IT WILL RECORD THE CONVERSATIONS OF ALL PARTIES. THIS WOULD BE UNLAWFUL. FEDERAL LAW REQUIRES THE CONSENT OF ALL PARTIES IN A CONVERSATION BEFORE THE CONVERS- ATION CAN BE RECORDED. CHECK YOUR STATE AND LOCAL REGULATIONS FOR FURTHER GUIDELINES. 1. Depress the tape counter reset button to reference the beginning of the recording. 2. Confirm that the VOX/NORMAL switch is set in the VOX position. 3. Depress and engage the RECORD button. 4. Lift the telephone handset from the cradle, the VTR-700 tape should start moving. Hang up the telephone, and the tape should stop moving in approximately six seconds. 5. If the tape does not stop within 6 to 10 seconds after the telephone is hung up, set the L/M/H sensitivity switch to the M or L position. 6. When the tape is full, the end of tape autostop will automatically disengage the REC key. The VTR-700 will stop recording and go to standby mode. 7. The tape must be either rewound and reviewed or the tape must be turned over to the other side before additional recording can occur. 24

OPERATION - continued PLAYING BACK RECORDINGS To play back recordings from the cassette tape, set the VOX/ NORMAL switch to the NORMAL position. 1. Press the STOP/EJECT button to cancel record operation. 2. Press the REVIEW/REWIND button to rewind the tape to the begining to assure that you have not missed any recordings. 3. When the tape has finished rewinding, press the STOP/EJECT button to cancel the rewind mode. 4. Press and engage the PLAY button to playback the tape. 5. If necessary, adjust the VOLUME control to a comfortable listening level. 6. During playback of the tape, the REVIEW/REWIND or CUE/F.FWD key can be partially depressed to rewind or fast forward the tape slowly. 7. When you have finished listening to your recordings, rewind the tape to the begining. As you make new recordings, the old recordings will be replaced. 25

MAINTENANCE Periodically clean the VTR-700 tape heads, guides and pinch roller with a soft cloth or a cotton swab moistened with denatured alcohol. Tape heads and guides also become magnetized over a period of time, and should be demagnetized periodically using a commercially available head demagnetizer. The VTR-700 has been designed to give years of trouble free service. To help insure its longevity, please read the following maintenance instructions: Keep the VTR-700 dry. If it gets wet, first unplug the AC power adapter then wipe the unit dry immediately. Liquids can contain minerals that can corrode electronic circuits. Use and store the VTR-700 only in normal temperature environments. High temperatures can shorten the life of electronic components and distort or melt its plastic parts. Keep the VTR-700 away from dust and dirt, which can cause premature product failure. Handle the VTR-700 gently and carefully. Dropping it can cause serious damage, which may result in causing it to malfunction. 26
