1 Manufacturer: ELAN Integration Note Model Number(s): EL-4KM-VW44 (Device Ver 2.20; Web Module Ver 6.23) Minimum Core Module Version: Document Revision Date: /11/2017 OVERVIEW AND SUPPORTED FEATURES The ELAN Video Wall Matrix connects via Ethernet to the ELAN system enabling reliable control and switching of video sources. The four matrix outputs can be deployed as either a four display video wall or up to four individual video displays zones viewable in a variety of tiled multi-view options similar to a picture in picture mode. ELAN VIDEO MATRIX SUPPORTS THE FOLLOWING FEATURES: Auto Network Discovery: During initial configuration the ELAN Configurator will locate all ELAN matrix devices on the network. EDID Type Setting: Use the ELAN Configurator to easily edit EDID parameters for each source. Selection of output mode: Use the ELAN configurator to easily configure the matrix as either a four display video wall or as tiled multi-view video displays. Selection of Source Type: Use the ELAN Configurator to select either HDMI or VGA with L/R audio for each source input. Flexible Control Options: The VW44 matrix can be controlled using automatically populated settings pages on its zones or alternatively event map commands are available for a customized solution. ELAN VIDEO MATRIX DO NOT SUPPORT THE FOLLOWING FEATURES: RS-232 Serial Control: The ELAN Matrix driver uses Ethernet only for communication and control. Volume Control: The ELAN EL-4KM-VW44 does not support direct volume control. Switching between Video Wall mode and Multi-View Tile mode from the ELAN User Interface: The ELAN Matrix must be deployed in an ELAN system as either a Video Wall matrix or a Multi-View matrix. This selection is made during initial configuration and cannot be changed from the ELAN user interface. Shared Sources: All source devices must be a direct input to the VW44 Matrix. Sources cannot be from a zone output on another video matrix. Distributed Outputs: The zone outputs on the VW44 must be direct to the video displays. VW44 Zone outputs cannot be distributed via another video matrix. Any feature not specifically noted as supported is not supported. 2 INSTALLATION OVERVIEW The following describes the basic steps to add the VW44 matrix to the ELAN system. Decide if the matrix will be used as a video wall or a multi-view display. Design and document the details for the AV system including sources and zones. Additionally, since this matrix does not control volume, design the audio control path. If this path is not the TV speakers then you may need to run an audio connection from the display to the audio zone controller. In this case, additional configuration will be required. During the rough-in phase install the necessary cabling for the distributed audio/video installation. Also during the rough-in phase, run a network cable from the location of the ELAN Video Wall Matrix back to the ELAN controller location to provide the Ethernet connection needed to control the Matrix. Refer to Connection Diagrams below for details. Install the speakers, displays, source devices, and other required components per your design. Connect the ELAN Matrix to the sources and zones per your design. Refer to the ELAN Matrix documentation for connection details. Refer to ELAN Configurator Details table and the steps below to add the ELAN Video Wall Matrix. a. On the Configurator Media tab add the EL-4KM-VXX and click to search for devices button to automatically discover the matrix on the network. b. Select the mode, either Video Wall or Multi-View, as designed. If set to video wall select the layout option for the displays. NOTE: this selection can not be changed from the ELAN user interface. This matrix may be deployed as a video wall or a multi-view matrix but not both. c. Assign each source device to the matrix and set the EDID to match the source output. d. Select the source input as either HDMI or VGA. e. On each zone output, right click the zone and select create Setting Page for this zone to automatically add the controls for the matrix. (Note: The ELAN system will generate different settings pages depending on which mode (video wall or multi-view) the matrix is configured for. If the mode is changed modes the setting pages will need to be deleted and recreated. Configure the audio path based on your design. This will include configuring the volume controls for the zone. The details of this step will depend on your design. Test the system by selecting sources in each zone to confirm the correct source plays then by initiating either wall mode or multi view mode as applicable. Refer to the notes about the two control modes below. 2 of 7
3 VIDEO WALL MODE The matrix video wall mode allows selection of any of the four source devices to be displayed as one video across all four displays (video wall mode) or all four sources can be viewed simultaneously - one on each display (matrix mode). The controls for the video wall will automatically populate on the settings page for each zone on the matrix or alternatively may be copied or created on any zone settings page as required. When using video wall mode the zone 1 output is the master display. The master display concept is used to simplify the source selection in this mode. When the layout is set to 2x2 the top left display is the master display, in 4x1 or 1x4 mode the left most or top most display is the master display. Control for the video wall is based on the master display and includes two custom controls as shown and described in more detail below. Since it is not practical to listen to more than one source at a time in one listening zone the master display is intended to be the audio source for the entire video wall zone. Selecting a source for this master display will select the audio for the zone. The controls show above are made using the Audio Mode Control. There is a setting in the Audio Mode Control Properties dialog box for this control that allows setting of the behavior of the control. In the case of this matrix, the style will select the commands for the control and the connect to will set the zone for the control. The control on the left is set to the style VW Mode and connected to Zone 1. This is a toggle control that switches the outputs between video wall mode and matrix mode. The rules below describe this buttons functionality: Toggling from Matrix to Video wall this will take the source that is currently active in the master display and expand it across the entire wall. Toggling from Video Wall to Matrix this will take the currently active source in the video wall mode shrink it into the master display. The other three displays will each be set to the previously inactive source inputs so there are no duplications. The control on the right is set to the VW Main Source style and is connected to Zone 1. This control will select the master display source while maintaining all four displays to have individual sources. Below is a description of how this will work: When video wall mode is active selecting an input will set that source as currently active in the master display and stream its video it across the entire video wall. The audio from this source will also be sent to the master display. When matrix mode is active Selecting an input in this mode will swap the selected source into the master display. The source that was previously active in the master display will be assigned to the display that the selected source was active in leaving all displays showing individual sources. The audio from the selected source will also be sent to the master display. 3 of 7
4 MULTI-VIEW MODE The matrix multi-view mode allows selection of the four source devices to be displayed on one video display in a variety of preset tiling options or one source in full screen on the display. The controls for the multi-view will automatically populate on the settings page for each zone on the matrix or alternatively may be copied or created on any zone settings page as required. In multi-view 2x2 layout the top left tile is the master tile, in all other presets the large tile is the master tile. Refer to the matrix documentation for all the preset definitions. Control for the multi-view is based on the master tile and the controls include four custom controls as shown and described below. IMPORTANT NOTE: When set to multi-view mode ALL zone outputs will be identical. When set to Matrix mode each zone output can be set to display from the four available sources. The controls show above are made using the Audio Mode Control. There is a setting in the Audio Mode Control Properties dialog box for this control that allows setting of the behavior of the control. In the case of this matrix, the style will select the commands for the control and the connect to will set the zone for the control. The control on the top left is set to the style MV Mode and connected to Zone 1. This is a toggle control that controls switching the outputs between multi-view mode and matrix mode. The rules below describe this buttons functionality: Toggling from multi-view to matrix this will take the source that is currently active in the master tile and expand it across the entire display. Toggling from matrix to multi-view this will take the currently active source in each tile and set them to display on the corresponding zone output. Note that in multi-view mode all the zone outputs will be identical. The controls on the lower left will select the audio/video source in the corresponding zone or tile. These controls use the style MV Audio Source or MV Main Video Source respectively. When matrix mode is active The video input buttons will select the audio and video source on the zone. In this mode the audio input buttons are not functional. When multi-view mode is active - all the matrix zone outputs will display identically and the buttons will function as below: o Selecting a video input in this mode will swap the selected source video into the master tile. The source that was previously active in the master tile will be assigned to the tile that the selected source was active in leaving all tiles showing individual sources. o Selecting an audio input will set the audio to all zones to the selected source input. The controls on the right are applicable only in multi-view mode and will select the tile page layout on the displays. This control uses the style MV Layout. 4 of 7
