2 R&S Prios SDI At a glance The R&S Prios SDI is a PCIe video board offering up to eight HD 1080p60 video channels or two UHD/4Kp60 video channels to meet the needs of OEM customers. The SDI interfaces are implemented by means of video SFP modules with cages also designed to accept 10G Ethernet modules, making the R&S Prios SDI ready to support future videoover-ip standards. The R&S Prios SDI, the first member of the R&S Prios family of products, is a video board designed for the PCIe bus. The video interfaces are implemented by means of SFP+ modules that can be plugged into the four available cages. Each module can provide two HD video channels. SDI SFPs with either two SDI inputs or two SDI outputs can be used, making a total of eight SDI video channels possible. Each channel can transmit formats up to HDTV 1080p60, although lower frame rates and smaller frame sizes are also possible. Four HDTV channels can be combined into one UHD/4K channel. The video channels are independent of one another, i.e. the frame size and frame rate can be set separately for each channel. The R&S Prios SDI addresses customers who develop and market their own digital video or digital film products and require an appropriate interface board. A software development kit (SDK) is available for integration into existing Windows and Linux applications. Customers with particularly short-term integration needs can take advantage of the fee-based support available from the Rohde & Schwarz developer team. 3 R&S Prios SDI Benefits and key features Low latencies are particularly important in live mode, which requires fast processing and playout of the signal. The high-speed third-generation PCIe bus with eight lanes permits exceptionally fast communications between the R&S Prios SDI and a PC. When used with R&S Direct API which is optimized for fast communications with graphics cards and which overlaps some data transfers over one another the R&S Prios SDI shows very low latencies of under two frames during data transmission from an SDI input to a GPU and back to the SDI output. This leaves the GPU with ample time for processing, i.e. with almost the duration of a frame. Multiple channels, maximum flexibility Eight HD 1080p60 video channels Two UHD/4Kp60 video channels 16 embedded audio channels per video channel Transmission of all ANC packets The flexible I/O design of the R&S Prios SDI makes it possible to use the same video board for many different applications. The number of inputs and outputs is determined by the SDI SFP+ modules used. This makes it possible to implement applications that require all input modules, all output modules or any combination of the two. Each of the eight video channels can transmit up to HD 1080p60 YCbCr 4:2:2, although all other formats and frame rates typically used for studio applications are also supported. Two HD channels each can be combined for use in classic dual-link applications, or four HD channels each can be combined into one UHD/4K channel. Internal processing for UHD/4K, e.g. YCbCr 4:2:2 to RGB 4:4:4 color space conversion, is performed on 4K data without artifacts at the quadrant boundaries. In all operating modes, each video channel can carry the video signal itself, plus up to 16 digital audio channels, and a variety of ancillary information/metadata such as time code, checksums, payload identifiers and other information. ANC packets with unknown IDs are also transmitted. Application programmers are able to define and transmit proprietary packets. All outputs have their own timebase. They can be synchronized to an external source via the genlock input or via an SDI input. The planned firmware 1) will make the standards SMPTE (forward error correction), SMPTE (uncompressed video) and SMPTE (redundant transmission over two network paths) available. Other protocols are planned to follow depending on the future development of the marketplace and future standards. Easy integration into existing applications Software development kit (SDK) for Windows and Linux Documentation with sample programs Professional integration support from the Rohde & Schwarz developer team An SDK is available for integration into existing applications. All R&S Prios SDI c ustomers can download the SDK free of charge from the Rohde & Schwarz GLORIS website after completing a free registration. The SDK contains drivers and libraries for Windows and Linux along with documentation and sample programs. These demonstrate how to use the SDK functions and can serve as a basis for new programs. The Rohde & Schwarz developer team offers fee-based support for customers facing a particularly short development cycle or who have limited experience in hardwareoriented programming of realtime processes.
