Overview EUMETCast Training Channel
EUMETCast Training Channel Improve access to training material - especially where Internet connectivity is limited Place training material with the data EUMETSAT & Third-Party data suppliers Pilot service for EUMETCast- Africa to start in mid-2013 Expand to Europe and Americas after successful pilot 8 Training Channel would be made available for use by the MESA project
EUMETCast Training Channel Training Channel characteristics: Set of zip files are disseminated on EUMETCast These are received and delivered to the Target Directory established by the user A script file will expand the contents from here the user can use the html file to navigate the contents Contents of EUMETCast Training Channel are mirrored on an FTP site. 9
Overview EUMETCast Disaster Charter Support
EUMETCast & the Charter An International agreement among participating Space Agencies to provide space-based data and information in support of relief efforts during emergencies caused by major disasters.
EUMETCast & the Charter Charter Data & Product Dissemination Charter data generated by the Charter Data Providers in support of the call will be disseminated via EUMETCast s Disaster Channel; These data will be available to Charter Project Managers to allow them to generate value added products in support of a call. Products generated by the PM in support of the call would be transferred to the EUMETCast Disaster Channel for use by the Authorised or End user. These products would be maps/imagery and other value added products for use by the disaster management agencies. 12
Overview EUMETCast Evolution & DVB-S2
EUMETCast bandwidth evolution - past
EUMETCast bandwidth evolution - future
DVB-S2 DVB-S2 Migration Migration Need for DVB-S2 migration Current transponder is more than 50% used by EUMETCast Max for DVB-S is 29 Mbps net rate Continuing DVB-S beyond 1 transponder is inefficient due to lack of free transponders Price Migration schedule is driven by bandwidth needs and the status of the service contracts that underpin EUMETCast
DVB-S2 Migration Benefits of DVB-S2 most effective and most flexible usage of a transponder s resources, close to the known physical limits the provision of high throughput the ability to shape the transponder usage depending on service characteristics due to flexibility in throughput the most cost effective usage of transponder resources secure the readiness of EUMETCast for upcoming missions
The future EUMETCast DVB-S2 based service Two virtual services EUMETCast-Europe in the future: The Basic Service catering broadly for Nowcasting needs, addressing most Users, with focus on cheap commercial-of-the-shelf equipment and small antenna sizes; Basic service: 8PSK 3/5, 44 Mbit/s net rate, 80 cm dish (footprint core) The High Volume Service catering for the NWP needs and broadly speaking for specialised users with focus on maximum volume dissemination; High Volume service: 8PSK 9/10, 66 Mbit/s net rate, 1.8 m dish (footprint core) Both services can coexist on one transponder in any ratio. A scenario with a 50%-50% ratio was successfully tested for its technical feasibility with a full transponder in Feb The link margin was higher than expected.
Transition to the EUMETCast DVB-S2 Service Transition from current to new service Parallel phase starting July 2014 Reuse of existing antennas will be possible New DVB reception device needed (mandatory) Following items are only known after selection of the new service providers: If different satellite is chosen, re-point reception antennas Footprint changes are possible, some regions might require larger antennas High Volume service will be introduced at a later stage
