Introduction Instructions Thank you for purchasing a LeCroy Zi Oscilloscope Synchronization ProBus Module (Zi 8CH SYNCH module). The module is designed for use on 4 30 GHz WaveMaster 8 Zi oscilloscopes to provide a common trigger reference to synchronize acquisition and display of: 8 (4 16 GHz) channels from two different WaveMaster Zi oscilloscopes. OR 4 (20 30 GHz) channels from two different WaveMaster 820, 825, or 830 Zi oscilloscopes (using DBI). When the Zi 8CH SYNCH module is connected to an oscilloscope, it identifies that oscilloscope as the Master oscilloscope and allows connection to a Slave oscilloscope which then functions purely as a data acquisition device sending its own data for synchronized display on the Master. The Zi 8CH SYNCH module is selfrecognized by the oscilloscope and does not require additional software options or keycodes to operate properly simply ensure the oscilloscopes are using identical firmware of version with c software patch, or any later version. Service If you are returning your accessory for service, please Contact LeCroy for Support. Use the part tables at the end of these instructions for referencing LeCroy part numbers for missing parts or ordering extras. Theory of Operation The Zi 8CH SYNCH ProBus hardware module (Zi 8CH SYNCH module) contains an EEPROM with identifying information and electrical circuitry to providing time stamped synchronization, trigger, and other signals to a Master and Slave oscilloscope. Plugging the Zi 8CH SYNCH ProBus module into a WaveMaster 8 Zi oscilloscope defines it as the Master and displays all acquired channels for easy viewing and analysis, while the other oscilloscope operates as a Slave and acquires data for sending to the Master RevA 1
Zi Oscilloscope Synchronization Module The user interface for common triggering and display of channels is enabled on the Master oscilloscope when the Zi 8CH SYNCH hardware ProBus module is attached to the Master AUX OUT connector. All triggering is performed by the Zi 8CH SYNCH module; data transfer is via an Ethernet crossover cable connected to the Master and Slave Ethernet ports, or through a network connection. Handshaking between oscilloscopes is automatic once the IP address of the Slave oscilloscope is defined. Connections The general setup involves the following: The Zi 8CH SYNCH module is connected to the AUX OUT ProBus connector on the Master oscilloscope. The module contains a comparator with a programmable threshold and a buffer to accept an external customer trigger signal (in User Edge trigger mode) with a relatively slow rise time and outputs two identical trigger signals (TRIGOUT1 and TRIGOUT2) with ~100 ps rise time to the Master and Slave oscilloscopes AUX IN ProBus connectors. These connections serve as their corresponding synchronized trigger inputs. If no external customer trigger signal is available, the module can be self triggered in a Periodic trigger mode. Finally, the SLAVE MASTER SYNCH connection is made from the Slave AUX OUT to the module. The SLAVE MASTER SYNCH connection provides positive feedback from the Slave to the Zi 8CH SYNCH module that an acquisition has occurred on the Slave (ensuring Master + Slave acquisition integrity). This is provided via a TRIG ENABLED output signal from the Slave oscilloscope. The 10 MHz Reference Clock Out on the Master oscilloscope is connected to the 10 MHz Reference Clock In on the Slave oscilloscope in order to synchronize the two oscilloscope acquisitions. Upon proper connection and receipt of a valid TRIG IN signal, the Master and Slave oscilloscope simultaneously acquire data RevA
Synchronized Periodic Trigger Instructions In the absence of an external customer input signal (TRIG IN), the Zi 8CH SYNCH ProBus module can use an internal fixed frequency clock to trigger the Master and Slave oscilloscopes automatically at a predefined interval. The Master and Slave oscilloscopes are set to this mode by selecting periodic mode from the Trigger dialog on the Master oscilloscope's user interface when the Zi 8CH SYNCH is connected. In this mode, the absence of a valid TRIG IN signal results in a forced trigger using a fixed frequency clock inside the Zi 8CH SYNCH module to generate a time stamp (the information is used to re synchronize the waveforms on the Slave oscilloscope) and automatically force both the Master and Slave oscilloscopes to acquire data at predefined intervals. Controlling Synchronized Oscilloscopes All display control of Master + Slave acquisitions comes from the graphical user interface on the Master oscilloscope. When the Zi 8CH SYNCH module is connected properly, all channels may be turned ON or OFF from the Master. Channel setup (vertical, pre processing, etc.) is completed on the Master or on the Slave oscilloscope, specifically where the acquisition originated for that particular channel. Triggering is via Edge trigger only from the Master oscilloscope using the common acquisition trigger pulse, or the oscilloscopes may be triggered at the predefined interval using asynchronous operation. Upon completion of a successful trigger, data transfer from the Slave to the Master oscilloscope is initiated for all channels, and all are displayed on the Master oscilloscope grid display. Trace descriptor labels for each acquired channel are also shown on the Master oscilloscope. When shown on the Master oscilloscope's display, Slave channels are renumbered 5, 6, 7, 8 (for Slave 1, 2, 3, 4 channels) in the case of synchronizing two oscilloscopes with 16 GHz or lower bandwidth, or 6 and 7 (for Slave 2 and 3 channels) in the case of synchronizing two oscilloscopes with 20 GHz or higher bandwidth. Getting Started After removing all parts from the packaging and preparing your oscilloscopes, use the following topics to properly setup your entire system. Prerequisites Before setting up your Zi 8CH SYNCH, ensure the following: The master and slave oscilloscopes are each connected to your internal network. OR The master is connected to the slave using a crossover cable. The 10MHz Ref clock out on the master oscilloscope is connected to the 10MHz Ref clock in on the slave using the BNC cable provided. The firmware on both oscilloscopes is version with software patch c (or later) RevA 3
Zi Oscilloscope Synchronization Module Signal Connections With the aforementioned prerequisite configurations made, set your system up using the following steps: Numbered labels correspond with the following descriptions. 1. Attach the BNC end of the Zi 8CH SYNCH module to the Master oscilloscope's AUX OUT connector. The system prompts you to restart the oscilloscope application software if you attach the Zi 8CH SYNCH module while the oscilloscope software is running. Click the OK button and allow the oscilloscope software to restart. Note: The top of the Zi 8CH SYNCH module bears a label with the input and output signals names and the module name shown. Hold the module firmly and press inward until secure and it clicks in place. 2. Attach the Master oscilloscope's 10 MHz CLOCK OUT to the Slave oscilloscope's 10 MHz CLOCK IN. Also, attach the included Ethernet Crossover Cable or connect both oscilloscopes to your internal LAN. Note: Disconnect your Zi 8CH SYNCH module by first clicking the Disconnect Slave DSO button on the Remote Slave DSO dialog, and then removing Crossover or Ethernet cables. Following this disconnection procedure preserves your setup and settings when reconnecting. Also, the Master restores the Reference Clock from External to Internal when the user disconnects the Slave from the Master. 3. Attach another provided 36" SMA cable to the TRIG OUT 1 (Master) of the Zi 8CH SYNCH module and the other end to the Master oscilloscope's AUX IN connector using an SMA BNC adapter. 4. Attach another provided 36" SMA cable to the TRIG OUT 2 (Slave) of the Zi 8CH SYNCH module and the other end to the Slave oscilloscope's AUX IN connector using an SMA BNC adapter. 5. Attach the last provided 36" SMA cable to the SLAVE SYNCH INPUT connector on the Zi 8CH SYNCH module and the other end to the Slave oscilloscope's AUX OUT connector using an SMA BNC adapter RevA
Instructions 6. Now, make signal input connections as desired. If providing your own Edge Trigger Input signal, connect it to the USER TRIGGER INPUT connector on the Zi 8CH SYNCH module. Otherwise, use the module s Periodic (fixed frequency clock) mode from the Trigger 8CH Synch dialog on the Master oscilloscope's user interface. See Interface Settings (on page 8) for more information. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: When making connection 3 and 4 previously described, be sure to use the 36" SMA cables provided as they are a reasonable, matched length. You can achieve up to eight 4 16 GHz oscilloscope channels from two different WaveMaster 8 Zi oscilloscopes, or four GHz channels from two different WaveMaster 820, 825, or 830 Zi oscilloscopes. When running four GHz channels from two different WaveMaster 820, 825, or 830 Zi oscilloscopes, both instruments must be setup in DBI mode (click the Timebase trace descriptor label and enable DBI from the dialog). The four channels used when running in DBI mode are 2 and 3 (from the Master) and 6 and 7 (renumbered from the Slave). Ensure the most accurate readings by repeatedly using your cable setup in the same specific configuration. Once you've setup your cables, you must then deskew all the Master and Slave oscilloscopes signal input channel connections (6, previous) you plan on using. See Deskewing Master and Slave Channels (on page 9) for more information. When the module is properly connected to the oscilloscopes, the entire setup should look like the following. Interface Settings Remote Slave DSO Dialog 1. Using the master oscilloscope's interface, connect from the master to the slave from the Remote Slave DSO dialog (Vertical Remote Slave from the menu bar) RevA 5
Zi Oscilloscope Synchronization Module 2. Provide the slave's IP address or the oscilloscope name in the IP Address / Remote Slave DSO field and click the Connect Slave DSO button. Note: At this point the 8CH Sync Module Connected checkbox should be checked acknowledging that the module is actually connected to your instrument. 3. When the master successfully connects to the slave DSO, the Connect Slave DSO button is disabled, the Master + Slave and Disconnect Slave DSO buttons are enabled, and the Slave Connected checkbox is checked. At this point, click the now enabled Master + Slave button. At this point, the Trigger trace descriptor label on the Master should show 8CH Sync. Also, the Trigger trace descriptor label on the Slave should indicate an External trigger. Eight Channel Setup on 4 16 GHz WaveMaster Zi Oscilloscopes After completing the correct Signal Connections (on page 4) for the inputs you plan on using, check the 5, 6, 7, and 8 channel checkboxes, as desired, to display up to 8 signals on the master oscilloscope. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: Input traces are enabled and used as a signal sources by marking the Cx View check box. However, the C5 C8 Slave Channel tabs/dialogs are all shown regardless as to whether or not you have checked a corresponding check box on the Remote Slave DSO RevA
Instructions Disconnect your Zi 8CH SYNCH module by first clicking the Disconnect Slave DSO button on the Remote Slave DSO dialog, and then removing Crossover or Ethernet cables. Following this disconnection procedure preserves your setup and settings when reconnecting. Also, the Master restores the Reference Clock from External to Internal when the user disconnects the Slave from the Master. Four Channel Setup using DBI on GHz WaveMaster 820, 825, or 830 Zi Master and Slave Oscilloscopes As mentioned previously, after performing DBI Signal Connections (on page 4) for the input channels (2 and 3 from the master and 6 and 7 from the slave) mark the corresponding C6 View and/or C7 View check boxes on the Remote Slave DSO dialog, as desired, to display up to 4 signals on the master oscilloscope. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: Trace descriptor labels and waveform data moves from the master to the slave instrument. Trace descriptor labels are also updated with correct signal and timebase information. When disconnecting your Zi 8CH SYNCH module by first clicking the Disconnect Slave DSO button on the Remote Slave DSO dialog, and then removing Crossover or Ethernet cables. Following this disconnection procedure preserves your setup and settings when reconnecting. Synchronized Data Shown on Trace Descriptor Labels After a proper synchronized connection between the two instruments, you should see trace descriptor labels for additional channels displayed on the Master oscilloscope. Timebase Trace Descriptor Label Touching the Timebase trace descriptor label on the master oscilloscope shows the Timebase dialog. The Master oscilloscope is set to RealTime sampling mode. This particular instrument is in Digital Bandwidth Interleave (DBI) mode (far right of the previous dialog) RevA 7
Zi Oscilloscope Synchronization Module Note: In the Clock Source dialog, the Zi 8CH SYNCH module sets the Reference Clock to External on the Slave oscilloscope. The Master oscilloscope Reference Clock stays on Internal. Figure 1 1. The Slave oscilloscope's Reference Clock fields set to External on the Clock Source dialog. Trigger Trace Descriptor Label and the Trigger 8CH-Sync Dialog Touching the Trigger trace descriptor label on the master oscilloscope shows the Trigger 8CH Sync dialog. On the Trigger 8CH Sync dialog, field value adjustments can be made for Trigger Mode, Level, and Slope. The module can cause a pseudo AUTO trigger mode by forcing a periodic capture using the Master oscilloscope s internal sine wave generator as an edge for the trigger. The result is a periodic, continuously triggering Master + Slave oscilloscope with the signal activity being captured by the corresponding instruments. This is done by selecting Periodic on the Trigger Mode field. OR You can enable the user input trigger from the Trigger 8CH Sync dialog by selecting User Edge from the Trigger Source field. This forces an acquisition in the Master and Slave oscilloscopes when an input signal (provided by the user) meets the Edge trigger conditions defined in the dialog setup. In either case, the captured data from both the Master and Slave oscilloscopes is synchronized. The Level field is tied to the Trigger Level front panel button. Enter a value or use the front panel button to provide a desired value. Use the Slope field to specify a Positive or Negative value. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: Before making any triggered acquisition, make sure the trigger level adjustment for the triggered channel corresponds to an approximate 50% value of the signal to optimize the amount of trigger jitter. In some cases, a trigger level may not be apparent verify the trigger level is set correctly. The Trigger Source field preserves the most recent master/slave connection setting used. There may still be a small amount of inherent channel channel skew that must be deskewed by the operator. Correct this and achieve the most accurate results from the Channel menu on both the Master and the Slave oscilloscopes RevA
Deskewing Master and Slave Channels Deskew Theory of Operation Instructions Deskewing is an adjustment of waveform data point occurrences on the screen. Deskewing is an operation to correct the times waveforms are displayed on the screen, mainly to account for propagation delays through probes and cables, and transfer times from the Slave to the Master oscilloscope. When considering skew, there are two important things to consider: The relative skew between two channels. The absolute skew from the zero time reference (the trigger point). Two channels are properly deskewed relative to each other when the difference between the deskew values entered for each channel aligns an edge occurring at the same time and applied to both channels. A channel is properly deskewed in an absolute sense when an edge is applied to the channel, the oscilloscope is triggered on the edge, and the edge appears such that the trigger threshold crossing appears at the trigger delay, which is the zero time reference on the oscilloscope screen. Probes or cables are deskewed one at a time relative to a reference such that the resulting calibration deskews each probe relative to every other probe or cable. The WaveMaster 8 Zi has a built in fast edge SMA output. This edge may be used as a common deskew reference edge, and output to either the SMA power splitter (provided) and then to cables connected to the oscilloscope channels, or to the PCF 200 Probe Deskew Fixture provided with many LeCroy probes (if probes are used in your measurements). Or, users can provide a fast edge signal of their own. Regardless, the exact cable or probe setup, and exact V/div range used in actual signal measurements should be used in the deskew procedure to ensure the most accurate and repeatable results. Note: The exact cable setup you plan on using for actual measurements from step 6 of Signal Connections (on page 4) must be the same setup used along with the cable splitter for the following deskew procedure for Master and Slave oscilloscope channels. During a deskew procedure when using the Zi 8CH SYNCH, the Master and Slave oscilloscopes must first be deskewed with respect to each other using a common reference edge. This establishes a channel + probe/cable reference point within both the Master and the Slave oscilloscopes. This same reference point is then used to deskew all channels within each oscilloscope. Typically, the deskew values required are very small, but it is good engineering practice to verify proper deskew and adjust as needed. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: If you're using probes on your input signals, be sure to include them in your deskew measurements. When providing your reference signal for deskewing signals, make sure it matches the appropriate V/div range you plan on using for your actual measurements. Creating Master and Slave Deskew Channel References Use the following procedure to first establish a deskew signal reference between C2 on the Master and C2 (or the relabeled C6) on the Slave oscilloscope. 1. Set up the Zi 8CH SYNCH to trigger in Periodic mode. Note: In Periodic mode you can only deskew by acquiring A SINGLE ACQUISITION at a time RevA 9
Zi Oscilloscope Synchronization Module 2. Connect one 36" SMA cable to the SMA power splitter (provided) and to whatever fast edge signal is being used for deskew. Then, connect a cable being used for actual measurements to C2 of the Master and another to C2 (or 6) of the Slave oscilloscope, and then connect the other ends of these cables to the SMA splitter. If probes are being used for measurement, the PCF 200 Probe Deskew Fixture may be used instead of cables. Note: Deskew adjustment for each channel must be done from the oscilloscope (Master or Slave) where they are physically input. 3. Ensure that both channels are displayed properly on the Master oscilloscope display grid, and that the v/div and other setting of both channels are as they will be when making actual measurements. 4. Now, to precisely align the edges of both signals, open the C2 channel dialog in the Master oscilloscope, touch the deskew area once and deskew the signal using the Pre Processing Deskew adjustment. You can use the slider bar, type in a value, or use the WaveScan front panel button (which doubles as an "Adjust" button when the Deskew field is highlighted in yellow). Adjust the deskew until both the C2 (Master) and C2 (relabeled C6, Slave) are edge aligned. When using the Zi 8CH SYNCH in User Edge trigger mode, you must input an edge signal for the deskew to the module. This allows you to deskew one channel at a time unless a second power splitter is used, creating a second input for a second channel RevA
Instructions The highlighted section of the following figure illustrates this use of the module. Tip: Turning on WaveStream or persistence during deskew adjustment provides an ideal display for visual inspection of the deskew adjustment accuracy. In User Edge trigger mode, it s easier to measure deskew accuracy with the Skew parameter (shown as follows) over multiple acquisitions. From the menu bar, select Measure Measure Setup. On the P1 dialog, select your inputs C2 and C6 (C2 from the Slave), respectively, and the Skew measurement parameter from the pop up window. At this point, go to the main Measure dialog and mark both the Show Table and Statistics checkboxes. You can then easily view min, max, and sdev measurements to ensure your deskew adjustments are within an acceptable range. The Skew parameter should return an sdev value of ~2.5ps and the min and max values should be equally distributed around zero. For most accurate results, use as fast an edge as possible RevA 11
Zi Oscilloscope Synchronization Module 5. Upon completion of either User Edge or Periodic deskew adjustments; the Master and Slave oscilloscope now have one channel deskewed in reference to one another. You now need to deskew the remaining channels on the Master oscilloscope with reference to the Master reference channel, and the remaining channels on the Slave oscilloscope with reference to the Slave reference channel. Using Master and Slave Deskew Channel References to Deskew the Remaining Channels After using your signal reference to deskew C2 (Master) and C2 (relabeled C6, Slave), deskew the remaining channels in the following manner. Deskewing Remaining Slave Channels Disconnect the SMA power splitter or PCF 200 Deskew Fixture from the C2 (Master) input and connect to the C3 (or relabeled C7) channel on the Slave oscilloscope. Use the previous 1 4 steps to deskew C3 (relabeled C7) to C2 (relabeled C6) on the Slave. Note: Do not adjust the deskew on the C2 (relabeled C6, Slave) Channel since this is the reference. Always adjust deskew on the other Slave channels C3 (relabeled C7), C4 (relabeled C8), and C1 (relabeled C5) to this reference. Repeat the previous step for the remaining C4 (relabeled C8), and C1 (relabeled C5) Slave channels. Upon conclusion of these steps, all Slave channels are deskewed with reference to the C2 (relabeled C6) Slave reference established earlier. Deskewing Remaining Master Channels Disconnect the SMA power splitter or PCF 200 Deskew Fixture from the Slave oscilloscope cables or probes and connect it to the Master oscilloscope cables and probes. One of the connections should be to C2 (Master), and the other to C3 (Master). Use the previous 1 4 steps to deskew C3 (Master) to C2 (Master). Note: Do not adjust the deskew on the C2 (Master) Channel since this is the reference. Always adjust deskew on the other Master channels C3, C4, and C1 to this reference. Repeat the previous step for the remaining C4, and C1 Master channels. Upon conclusion of these steps, all Master channels are deskewed with reference to the C2 (Master) reference established earlier. Obtaining Most Accurate Results The above procedure describes the most accurate deskew possible using the Zi 8CH SYNCH. However, more accuracy may be obtained through an additional manual adjustment of single long acquisitions of customer data. For instance, the Master and Slave oscilloscopes can be deskewed with reference to each other within 2.5 ps rms, and individual channels on the Slave or Master can be deskewed to much better than 1 ps with reference to each other. However, a user may desire better than 2.5 ps rms skew between the Master and Slave channels. In this case, deskew the Master and Slave oscilloscopes as described above, and then use the long memory of the LeCroy oscilloscopes to make a single long acquisition. Once the acquisition is completed and all channels are displayed on the Master display grid, create zoom waveforms of the C2 (Master) and C2 (relabeled C6, Slave) previously used as reference channels for deskewing the Master to the Slave oscilloscope RevA
Instructions Now, align the edges of your acquired signals by fine adjusting the deskew value of the C2 (Master) channel (the one previously deskewed). Note: Do not adjust the deskew of the C2 (relabeled C6, Slave) Channel since it has a zero value and is the reference for all other adjustments. Depending on your application, it may also be possible to perform this single shot fine deskew adjustment using a customized routine (refer to the Customization sections covering XDEV in the online help on your oscilloscope for more details). These last fine adjustments make it possible to deskew the Master and Slave with reference to each to within ~1 ps. Keep in mind that one single long acquisition using this additional fine deskew adjustment does not take any more time than shorter acquisitions, yet it returns an equivalent or better set of data in many measurement and analysis scenarios RevA 13
