2 Camden County College Camden Technology Center Overview There are a variety of learning spaces in the Camden Technology Center: 1) Six PC application classrooms including a dedicated computer graphics (MAC) lab and a CAD application classroom; 2) a traditional classroom; 3) a learning theater that converts to two seperate classrooms; 4) an executive conference room with teleconferencing capability; 5) and a meeting room with conference table. This guide is intended to help familiarize you with the advanced capabilities that are built-in to these learning spaces. Each features advanced electronic instructor podiums. Computer classrooms are designed to teach specific hands-on software applications and contain 30 individual student workstations. The learning theater features plug and play capability for laptops and has seating for 60. In addition a wireless network broadband signal is available for all laptop users who have Wi-Fi capability. -1-

3 The standard instructional configuration includes: Large screen projection system Dell PC with Windows NT operating system and MS Office software Sympodium A/V interface with electronic white board features DVD player VHS video cassette player with multi-channel Comcast cable television reception Document camera Premium sound system Sympodium Flat-Panel Controller The heart of the smart classrooms is the Sympodium A/V interface. The Sympodium connects the computer and all of the audiovisual devices in the classroom and gives the instructor complete control through use of a pen and screen interface. There is no need for extension cords or connectors. Everything is pre-wired and ready to go. The Sympodium should always be left on. After a few minutes of non-use, the panel will go to sleep. To activate the panel from sleep mode, touch the screen with the stylus pen. Getting Started Power up the system by activating the Sympodium. 1) Touch the screen using the stylus pen. The Sympodium will activate. 2) Touch the logo to begin. The Sympodium will display a system start-up screen. -2-

4 After the system is ready, it may take a few more seconds for the projector to become functional. A projector warm-up indicator will display during this time. There are seven buttons listed on the left side of the display. Each button represents an audiovisual input device. Choose a device by touching a corresponding button with the stylus pen, YOU MUST USE THE STYLUS; fingers or other objects will not work. ROOM PC Select the ROOM PC button to display your computer monitor on the large screen. The computer must be turned on and activated using a login code separately from the Sympodium. You will notice that the computer monitor s image is displayed in a small screen on the Sympodium. The image can be enlarged to full screen mode by touching the image with the stylus pen. To reduce the image, select the reduce button. USING ANNOTATION When in the PC mode, the Sympodium functions as an electronic white board. To use the annotation feature, enlarge the PC image to full screen by touching it with the stylus pen. Select one of the color pen icons on the top of the Sympodium. Gently press the stylus pen against the Sympodium screen and write. -3-

5 There are three colors and an eraser available. When finished annotating, reset the Sympodium by selecting the mouse icon on the upper lefthand corner of the device. IMAGE MUTE The Image Mute button, located in the upper right of the Sympodium screen, can be used to disable the video projector (turn the screen black) without having to turn off the system. AUDIOVISUAL RACK A DVD Player and VHS VCR are mounted in an audiovisual cabinet located to the right or left of the instructor s desk. To access these devices, locate the cabinet and open the doors. DVD PLAYER How to show a DVD: 1) Push the eject button on the front of the DVD player. 2) Insert a DVD and push the eject button to load the disk.all DVD functions are accessible from the Sympodium. 3) From the Sympodium, touch the DVD button with the stylus pen. The display will change to DVD mode. 4) Standard DVD functions are displayed: Play ; Stop ; and Search. 5) To adjust the volume, touch the volume control on the Sympodium. Volume is pre-set at 70 percent of maximum. -4-

6 VCR How to show a VHS videotape: 1) Load a cassette. A Panasonic front-loading VCR is located in the audiovisual cabinet. Gently insert the cassette about one inch into the machine. Do not force. The machine will grab and load the cassette. 2) All VCR control functions are accessible from the Sympodium. 3) From the Sympodium, touch the VCR button with the stylus pen. The display will change to VCR mode. 4) Standard VCR functions are displayed: Play ;Stop ; Fast Forward ; Rewind ; Pause. 5) To adjust the volume, touch the volume control on the Sympodium. Volume is pre-set at 70 percent of maximum. DOCUMENT CAMERA The document camera can be used to project hand-written notes, 3-D objects, charts, maps and information from textbooks. Using the document camera: 3) From the Sympodium, touch the Document Camera button with the stylus pen. The display will change to Document Camera mode. 4) Place the object to be projected on the base of the camera. 5) Adjust zoom and focus on the Sympodium with the stylus pen. 6) Select Upper Light for opaque objects and Lower Light for transparencies. -5-

7 SHUTTING DOWN To power-down the system, press the logo on the bottom right of the Sympodium display. A confirmation menu will appear. Select YES to shut down or NO to cancel. The Video projector requires a few minutes to cool. During this time, the Sympodium cannot be restarted. NEED MORE HELP?
