5 Instructions Introduction: The Quick Pitch Display System is used to display pitch speed on a large display typically located in a baseball park outfield. The system accepts data from a radar gun, interprets the data and transmits it via either radio or wire to the display. Quick Setup: 1. Connect your Stalker Pro or Stalker Sport Radar gun to the Quick Pitch Control using the Stalker Communication Cable. 2. Connect the 12VDC power supply to the Control and plug into a 110VAC outlet. 3. If the display device is to be connected by wire, plug the control wire into the RS485 jack. Note: Control cable should not be used if the optional radio transmitter is installed. 4. In order, power-up the 1) numeric outfield display, 2) control, and 3) radar gun. During the power up test of the control, 88 should be briefly displayed on both the numeric display and control s LCD. Radar Setup: The Stalker radar guns retain their last configuration settings and shouldn t ordinarily need to be changed unless the gun was used for unrelated purposes. 6 Operation: The Quick Pitch Control has an automatic and manual mode of operation. In the automatic mode, the Control automatically identifies valid information and transmits it to the display and then clears the display approximately 9 seconds later. In the manual mode, the Quick Pitch Control presents the data that it proposes to transmit on the Control s front readout. Upon inspection, the user can either Send the data to the display or Clear the information and wait until new data is available. Automatic Operation: 1. Set up the Quick Pitch system and Stalker Radar as discussed above. 2. Select Auto on the mode select switch located on the back cover. 3. Speed data will be monitored by the Control and automatically sent to the numeric display for speeds exceeding 50 mph. The display will then be cleared 15 seconds later and the Control will start monitoring the radar data again. 4. If for whatever reason the display needs to be cleared before the 15 seconds (e.g. the next pitch is being made, or erroneous data has been sent, push the Clear button Manual Operation: 1. Set up the Quick Pitch system and Stalker Radar as discussed above. 2. Wait for valid data to Control LCD readout. If invalid data appears, push Clear 3. When valid data appears on the readout, push Send and the information will be sent and shown on the external display. 4. Push Clear to remove data and begin accepting new data. Advanced Setup: Note: Normally set correctly as ordered from factory. 1. Inside the Interface Control is a 16 position mode switch. The mode switch controls the format of the data leaving the interface control. The mode switch should be set in position 0 if the optional radio transmitter is used and in position 1 if cable is to be used. The mode switch is accessed by removing the front cover, unplugging the push-button switches, unscrewing the back cover, and withdrawing the back cover and PCB from the housing case. The mode switch is the lower of the two switches if the optional radio transmitter is installed. 2. If the optional radio transmitter is to be used, the channel selected on the transmitter must be set to the same channel as the receiver. The transmitter is mounted within the interface control and is the upper of the printed circuit cards. Positions 1 to D are all active channels. Positions 0, E, and F are inactive. 7 SETUP & TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL Introduction: This manual provides setup configurations of the Quick Pitch Outfield Display and basic system troubleshooting procedures. This information in supplemental to the Instructions provided with the system and is inherently technical. System Overview: The Quick Pitch System s basic purpose is to accept data from a Stalker Pro or Stalker Sport radar gun measuring pitch speed and transmit the speed to an outfield display for the benefit of the spectators. The system has three basic components, the: 1) Radar, 2) Control, and 3) Outfield Display. The Control provides power to the Radar gun, which returns speed data back to the Control. The Control monitors the Radar s data. When a pitch speed exceeding 50mph is sensed by the Control, the Speed data can be automatically sent or manually sent to the Outfield Display. A rocker switch on the Control s back panel sets the type of transmission (automatic or manual). Automatic transmission sends the data to the Outfield Display and then clears the Display 7 seconds later before accepting the next pitch speed information. Manual transmission requires the operator to push Control s Send button to output the speed to the Outfield Display and later push Clear so the Control can accept new speed data. Initial Setup 1. The Control is shipped inside the Outfield Display. To access the Control remove screws around the entire digit window Figures 1 and 2 show the general configuration of the Outfield Display. Note the window will come completely out Figure 1(caution: there are wires connected to the digit so be careful removing the window and replacing it ) and the test indication in Figure VAC power is connected to the Outfield Display inside the 4x4 box shown in Figure 3. The power must be connected to an external circuit breaker to turn on and off the power. When the power is turned on, the Outfield Display will show a random number or array of lights. 3. The Control and Radar Gun should be set up and operated as described in the Instructions. Particular care should be made to ensure the Stalker modes are properly set in accordance with the Quick Pitch Instructions. A) When the Control is plugged in and the power is turned on it goes through a start up routine. During this routine the Control s LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) shows the firmware version number and also transmits an 88 to the Outfield Display for 2 seconds. i) If there is no readout on the LCD when the power is turned on, check to make sure the unit is properly plugged in and power is actually available at the outlet. If there is no sign of power to the Control, contact the Trans-Lux Service Center. 2) Turn on the Radar. A) The radar will go through a power up sequence as will be shown on the Radar s LCD readout. Verify the Radar s modes are set according to the Quick Pitch Instructions. i) If the Radar isn t powering up, check the connection of the power and data cable that runs between the two units. ii) Test the power output from the Control using a voltmeter. 12VDC power is supplied to the Radar and 5VDC logic / data is returned. Test the power output at the Radar end of the cable. iii) If the Radar still doesn t power up, contact Stalker s Service Center for repair instructions. 3) Test the Radar and Control s Communication A) Using the tuning fork that came with the Stalker radar, twang the fork and position it in front of the Radar. The Radar s LCD should promptly display the proper speed of the tuning fork (as stamped onto the tuning fork). The same speed should appear on the Control s LCD display. Depending upon the mode (automatic or manual) that speed can then be sent to the Outfield Display. i) If the speed data does not readout on the Control s LCD, recheck the communication cable. If you are confident of the connections and that power is applied and the system still doesn t operate, contact your Trans-Lux Service Representative. ii) For Service Technician reference only, inside the Control there are two identical rotary switches. (1) The top switch is the channel selector only channels 1 9, A, B, & C are active. Channels D, E, F, and 0 are not used. The channel must be set the same on the Control s transmitter as the Outfield Display s receiver. (2) The lower switch is a mode select switch. The mode should be set to position 0 for wireless operation and position 1 for wired operation. In position F, the display automatically and continually counts from 0 to 109. 9 Troubleshooting the Outfield Display 4) Turn on the Outfield Display A) When power is applied to the Outfield Display, a random array of the leds should turn on and remain on until valid data is received from the Control. Also, during the first second of when the display is powered up, the red LED located on the Receiver will light up. i) If none of the leds light up, check the power to the Outfield Display using a voltmeter to the power supply inside the Outfield Display (Figure 3). ii) If power is present and there are no indications on the led display, contact Trans-Lux Service. The led 1208 driver card will need to be replaced. 5) Test the Receiver A) To test the receiver, you will have to expose the Receiver unit by loosening the two screws on the front of the LED 1208 driver enclosure and slide the cover up than out. When the receiver gets data from the transmitter or when the Outfield Display is powered up, the Red LED blinks for a fraction of a second. (To perform these tests will generally require two people; one located at the display and the other available to turn on and off the Display and the Control.) B) For troubleshooting convenience there is a special mode in the Control that continually counts up from 40 to 109 and transmits this information to the Outfield Display. Receiver Red LED Receiver Jumper Figure 5 Receiver Assembly Receiver Channel SW i) If the receiver light doesn t blink when power is applied to the Outfield Display, the receiver isn t getting any power. (1) Check all wire connections. ii) If the receiver blinks when power is applied, but doesn t blink when data is sent (e.g. when the Control is first turned on) there is a RF communications failure. (1) Make sure there is a line-of-sight between the Control and Outfield Display. (2) Check to verify the antenna is installed and securely tightened. (3) Check the RF coax to ensure it securely connected to the Receiver receptacle. (4) Check the power / data cable is secure between the LED 1208 card and the Receiver (5) Test the system with the Control located close to the Outfield Display. (6) Verify the channels on the receiver and the transmitter are both the same. (7) Test the system on another channel by setting both the Transmitter (Control) and Receiver (Outfield Display) to another channel. Both the transmitter and receiver need to be set to the same channel and only channels 1 to 9, A, B, & C are functional. (8) Verify the Receiver jumper is plugged into the right connector on the receiver (this disables the channelscanning mode used in other Trans-Lux applications). (9) If RF communications are intermittent or non-existent, contact the Trans-Lux Service Center and expect to replace both the Control and the Receiver Assembly. iii) If the Receiver appears to be working normally, then data isn t being sent to the driver card. Fair-Play Scoreboards LIMITED SCOREBOARD WARRANTY Fair-Play provides a limited five-year warranty when its permanently mounted scoreboards and scoreboard controllers are operated and maintained according to the owner s instructions furnished with the equipment. Such limited warranty is two years for portable scoreboards. This warranty covers all electronic components, including LEDs, for five or two years as applicable from the date of invoice that prove to be defective in material or workmanship. Our #161 and #655-type indoor lamps are warranted on a ten-year factory exchange basis from the date of invoice. Warranted for one year are mechanical control panel switches, connectors, horns and visual goal indicators. Wireless control components are warranted for two years. Wireless control devices even if not defective may not function reliably in certain environments or otherwise due to outside causes beyond Seller s control, including but not limited to cell phones or portable computers. In the event it is determined a wireless device during the ninety (90) day period following shipment does not function in accordance with its specification without repeated errors or is otherwise consistently unreliable, and Seller determines repair or replacement thereof is not likely to improve performance, at Purchaser s request, upon return to Seller postage prepaid in like new condition within such time period, Seller s sole obligation shall be to refund the entire purchase price of such device. Thereafter Seller s sole obligation shall be to repair or replace, other non- wireless defective components for the balance of the warranty period without responsibility or liability for claims for unreliable performance not due to defects. Batteries, battery packs and battery recharging equipment are warranted for thirty (30) days, except for defects arising from misuse, abuse, negligence or other exclusions set forth below. In no event will Fair-Play have any obligation for any damage caused by defective batteries, battery packs and battery recharging equipment. Also warranted for 30 days are outdoor portable scoreboard carts. Fair-Play s sole obligation during the applicable warranty period is to repair or replace any defective items. Defective assemblies or components are to be returned postage prepaid to Fair-Play s service center, after obtaining a return authorization number, for repair or replacement at no cost to the owner during the applicable warranty period. Replacement parts may be either new or like-new. Return shipping costs after repair will be paid by Seller except for overnight, express or special shipping costs which shall be paid by Purchaser. Excluded from this warranty are fuses, major components provided by other manufacturers including, but not limited to, computers, rotating signs, power distribution panels, disconnect switches and components of rear-illuminated or lighted signs. The other manufacturer s warranty will apply to such components. Also excluded from this warranty are electronic signs or message centers and related controls. These items are covered by their own specific warranty. THIS WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES OF SELLER, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, AND, EXCEPT TO THE EXTENT HEREIN PROVIDED, SELLER DOES NOT MAKE ANY WARRANTY WHATSOEVER INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR ANY PARTICULAR USE OR PURPOSE. Fair-Play shall not be liable for any incidental, special or consequential damages nor any other loss that may arise in connection with its warranted equipment or any claims under this warranty. (Individual states may have limitations on the length of implied warranties.) This warranty does not cover shipping damages or problems which result from improper installation of your equipment. (Promptly inspect shipment for visible or concealed damages and report immediately to the delivering carrier.) Under no circumstances shall this warranty apply if the warranted products have been subject to abuse, misuse, neglect, sabotage, acts of terrorists, negligence, accident, or any casualties or abnormal conditions, including without limitation fire, civil disorders, war, flood, lightning or acts of God. Nor does this warranty cover labor or damage resulting from, or problems caused by, any repair, alteration, modification, or adjustment of the warranted scoreboard(s) or components not performed by Fair-Play. This warranty extends only to the original purchaser of the warranted products, and is not transferable. For information on extended warranties contact your Fair-Play dealer.
