1 GENERAL INFORMATION TERMINOLOGY Probe vs. electrode : Usually, they mean the same thing. Sometimes electrode is used to refer to the positive or negative part of the probe, which causes some confusion. That is why we use the term probe to refer to the entire unit. ph Combination probe: ph and reference parts combined into one probe. Note that this DOES NOT include temperature. ATC probe: Automatic Temperature Compensation probe. This probe measures temperature only. 3-in-one probe: A probe which incorporates a ph probe, reference probe and an ATC probe. The ph part may be gel-filled or refillable. Triode: Thermo Scientific Orion s trademarked name for a 3-in-one probe. Refillable probe: A probe which has a hole to extract and refill internal filling solution. Gel-filled probe: A sealed probe which does not allow the internal filling solution to be changed. It does not contain a gel. In most cases, it contains the same filling solution as its refillable counterpart. Sure-Flow TM probe: Everybody knows they are supposed to change the fill solution in their ph probe, but few do it as often as they should. Sure-Flow technology makes it a snap to flush out your old solution and clean the reference junction at the same time. Simply pressing down on the cap flushes the junction and empties the fill solution from the electrode. The Sure-Flow feature is available on several styles of electrodes, including the ROSS Line. Ross TM probe: Ross electrode technology has been patented by Thermo Scientific Orion. These electrodes have extremely fast response times in solutions with low ionic content such as drinking water and final effluent when compared to other electrodes. ROSS electrodes are available with or without a Sure-Flow feature. ph pen: A quick and dirty way to estimate ph for screening purposes. As with ph paper, the ph pen should NEVER be used for reporting purposes. Order Toll Free

2 GENERAL INFORMATION A ph meter (even if it includes temperature and millivolts) is good for ph only. In theory, you could run ISE measurements (such as Ammonia and Total Residual Chlorine) if the meter has a millivolt mode, but you would have to graph every calibration. This is so tedious that very few technicians do this. So you may wish to consider a ph/ise meter if there is a chance that you will need ISE capabilities in the future. Otherwise, you will have to purchase an additional ISE meter. GOOD LABORATORY PRACTICE Good laboratory practice requires you to calibrate your probe with AT LEAST two buffers or standards. Some procedures and/or regulatory agencies may require a three-point calibration. All probes should be calibrated at least every day that they are used. If they are used for more than four hours in succession, they should be recalibrated. This is good laboratory practice, and holds true regardless of what brand of meter and probe you have. Buffers, as well as samples, should be stirred during calibration and measurement. This means with a stir plate, not by swishing the probe around with your hand. Stirring at a uniform low-tomedium speed will increase the response speed, as well as the accuracy, of any ph probe. MAINTENANCE Normally meters do not require any maintenance. The advantage of gel-filled probes is that no maintenance is required. The disadvantage is that no maintenance is possible. As a ph probe ages, the response slows, just like with people. With a ph probe, the slowing response is usually due to the filling solution being contaminated or depleted of ionic strength. With a sealed ( gelfilled ) probe, there is nothing you can do about this, except replace the probe. With a refillable probe, you can remove the old filling solution and replace it with fresh filling solution. We make the following recommendations: 1. Those of you who actually read the probe manuals know that most manuals recommend changing the filling solution once a week. Many people change it never. Let s split the difference and make sure the filling solution is changed once a month. This should be sufficient for most applications. 2. Changing means removing as much of the old solution as possible. Our NCL# PF-5 transfer pipet is helpful for that purpose. Note that changing does not mean merely adding new solution to replenish for evaporation. Doing this will result in crystallization at the bottom of the probe, eventually plugging the reference junction and slowing or stopping the response. 3. Always use the correct filling solution for the specific probe. DO NOT use Thermo Scientific Orion filling solution for a Corning probe, or YSI filling solution for a Thermo Scientific probe, or any other combination. Even if you THINK it is all the same-it isn t. Always use fresh filling solution-not something you found in a drawer. For some reason, many manufacturers do not usually give an expiration date for filling solutions on their label. In no case should filling solution be used if it is over two years old. 4. If you decide to clean your ph probe, consider the following: A. Changing the filling solution and using fresh buffers usually does more to improve a ph probe s performance than does cleaning. B. Always use the exact cleaning procedure for your particular probe as described in the probe manual, paying close attention to the soak times. If the manual says 2 minutes, it means two minutes, not ten. There are some that figure the manual says two minutes, but my probe is really dirty, so I ll leave it in 10 minutes. We really like people who think like this because they buy a lot of replacement probes. Order Toll Free

3 GENERAL INFORMATION SLOW RESPONSE A ph probe s response time is judged by the length of time it takes to get a stable reading in a buffer NOT A SAMPLE! A buffer is a solution that is high in ionic strength and is formulated to resist a change in ph. A ph probe should stabilize in a uniformly stirred buffer within one minute, preferably less. However, it is NORMAL for a ph probe to take 10 minutes or more to stabilize in an unbuffered solution of LOW ionic strength, such as drinking water, final effluent, or lab-pure water. In one of our tests, it took 46 minutes to reach a stable reading in deionized water. This is normal. What can you do to speed up a probe s response? A. Stir, using a stir-plate - don t swish it with your hand. B. Change the filling solution at least once a month. C. Buy a better probe. Ross probes are faster and more accurate than economyline probes. Isfet (solid state) ph probes are fast, but lose their calibration quickly, sometimes within 15 minutes. You get what you pay for. The cheapest probes are slower responding and less accurate than the expensive ones. There is no way around this. PACKAGING: WHAT S INCLUDED Manufacturers are making life difficult again with several different packages for every meter. For example: with or without probe, electrode holder, cases, etc. When comparing our prices with our competitors, be sure to consider what is included in each package.
