1 EXTREME SCREEN THEATER Overview The Extreme Screen Theater entrance is located on the first level of the building. Its exit is on the mezzanine level. Most movie screens are made to take up the entire field of vision of the viewer; large ones are 26 ft high by 65 ft. long. That gives a picture that is twice as wide as it is high. COSI's Extreme Screen is 83 feet wide and 7 stories tall which gives an image shaped Theater like that of a television, only much, much larger and more detailed. This is what makes the theater so unique. The theater seats approximately 400 people

The IESNA Handbook lists Theater and Motion Picture Houses design criteria as Not Important or N/A. However, some objectives of lighting in the motion picture theater may be outlined as follows: To create a pleasing, distinctive environment: Very Important This is important. There should be no indirect light placed in this space. Luminaires should not distract the occupants from the task at hand: watching the movie. To create adequate visibility for safe circulation at all times: Very Important During the picture viewing, it is extremely important that there is enough light in case of an emergency. Also, the occupants may have to use the restroom facilities or want to go get food. The illuminance level should be between 0.1 and 0.2 fc. Aisle luminaires should be spaced to give a uniform illuminance of 10:1 in the aisle. To provide comfortable viewing conditions: Very Important Since the movies last a considerable amount of time, the occupants must be comfortable in viewing the film. The luminous contrast between the screen and its black border should not exceed 1000:1 or it will create uncomfortable viewing conditions. The screen luminance with the picture running should be between 3 and 20 cd/m²

3 Design Goals When watching movies, a person wants to be comfortable and at ease which is why the overall feel of this space should be one of relaxation and calmness. Incandescent lighting sources will be used with a dimmable lighting system to achieve the desired lighting patterns and levels. The lighting scheme is implemented in this space with the use of color. Blue was used in this space because when viewed, it promotes concentration yet calmness, which ties in to the overall design of this space. Lights will be grouped to have preset dimming controls. The dimming panel is connected to an emergency power transfer system. *Power Plans can be found in Appendix B

The illuminance levels provided met the design criteria for this space. Illuminance levels over the seating area form a non uniform pattern since they slope. Climbing up the slope, the values get higher. The walkway has a uniform lighting pattern, that provides for a safe mean of egress

8 Conclusions The addition of color really added another dimension to this space that is not a typical movie theater. The power consumption of the redesign was 0.42W/ft², which is well under ASHRAE 90.1 and also approximately half of the existing space
