2 DVX Digital Versatile Headend - The Platform for Digital Age Overview Cable operators today are heavily affected by globalisation, rapid technology development and liberalisation and deregulation of telecommunication market. Cable networks are well positioned, which means that competition for networks and for their customer base is increasing at a steady pace. At the same time it is becoming increasingly complex to keep a competitive service offering up-to-date. In most of the cases remaining parts of existing headends are modernised in connection with the headend consolidation in order to minimise operational cost. These trends are evidently changing the nature of a headend but by no means decreasing its importance. Result of this is that increasingly more emphasis is put on important properties such as small size, low power consumption and intelligence. We have been able to meet all these and much more in the DVX platform without sacrificing from state-of-the-art performance. One indication of present trend is headend consolidation, in which several islands of cable networks are interconnected in order to reduce the number of headends. In practise this means interfacing to the transport network instead of own program reception.
3 DVX Design Philosophy The Platform The basic building block of the DVX platform is the 19 wide 6RU high sub-rack that complies with ETSI telecommunications standards. Together with a power supply and a wideband output module, each sub-rack can house up to nine signalprocessing modules with a cable output. Integrated part of the sub-rack is the passive back plane with both power and element management bus as well as the broadband combiner, which all minimise the need for interconnection cables. In case of narrowcast services even higher segmentation can be achieved when using the sub-rack without the broadband combiner. All Teleste headend product families, DVX, DVX tend, DVO and ATMux TM, are based on the same mechanical platform. The System TERRESTRIAL GROUP CHANNEL PROCESSING PSU MODULES GROUP CHANNEL PROCESSING PSU MODULES WB AMP WB AMP RF RF A typical DVX headend consists of a number of sub-racks. Each sub-rack or a number of sub-racks forms a group. Modules in each group can be arranged according to input signal, output frequency, signal processing function or even to service area, which ever suits the customer best. The output of each group is connected to the group combiner, the output of which is distributed to the launch amplifiers or fibre optic transmitters. In case of narrow-casting, the sub-rack output can be directly connected to the e.g. fibre optic transmitter of that specific service area. This kind of modularity is ideal to give the flexibility needed in a day-to-day operation as well as in future upgrades. DIGITAL GROUP High Integration Leads to Low Footprint PSU PSU CHANNEL PROCESSING MODULES OPTICAL GROUP OPTICAL TRANSMITTER/ RECEIVER MODULES WB AMP RF RF RETURN PATH RF - COMBINER Each module in the DVX platform represents an operational entity. All processing required for a single cable channel output, whether from baseband video and audio or from DVB-S, is performed within one module. A single DVX sub-rack has room for several signal processing modules. These sub-racks can be installed back-to-back into a 19 telecom cabinet. In practise one cabinet has room to over one hundred channels in a footprint of as small as 0.5 m 2, the space taken up by less than ten channels in old generation headends. System Level Powering for Cost-Efficient Operation HFC NETWORK Guidelines from Open Standards One property of the DVX platform is the system level powering, which provides for remarkable savings in the power consumption as one power supply is catering for a number of signal processing units. Low power consumption means additional savings on money spent on air-conditioning as less heat is dissipated. The third dimension is the increased reliability and prolonged lifetime as the products are running cooler. This is a strategic decision based on the understanding, that present business environment can not afford to implement proprietary systems that handcuff operator s migration into the future. All parts of the DVX platform have been designed according to open standards. The analogue part complies with CENELEC standards. Digital functions have been designed according to DVB, SDH, ATM and DAVIC.
4 DVX Features NICAM Stereo Sound for More Enjoyable TV Experience The customer expectation for high quality audio experience in conjunction with a TV picture has increased dramatically after the introduction of DVD and Dolby 5.1. The best corresponding technology for the analogue TV is the NICAM stereo sound. However the adoption of NICAM stereo sound in the CATV headends has been limited due to high additional cost and extra space required. DVX TV modulators change this attitude, as the NICAM Encoder is an integrated part of the TV Modulator. The same applies to the A2-Stereo sound. Integrating RDS and ADR into FM Processing The requirement for professional FM processing has not been forgotten. We have brought it one step further as the standard FM stereo modulator includes an interface for RDS (Radio Data System) data. This clearly offers value added to the operator in form of a new advertising and information channel. The same philosophy applies to the FM stereo modulator with satellite input. In addition to the normal detection of audio subcarriers it also support ADR (Astra Digital Radio). Other FM processing functions include standard FM channel conversion and FM band amplification. PSI/SI Processing part of every DVB-C unit Service and PID filtering as well as PID re-mapping and NIT processing are operations, that usually are found in a re-multiplexer. However the need for processing the tables is valid for all digital channels around the network, not only for those composed at the so-called Super Headend. This is why we have implemented PSI/SI processing capabilities into all digital modules with a DVB-C output. MPEG-2 Decoders for the Transition Period Although digital TV deployment is at full speed, the analogue technology will stay for years to come. The next generation of MPEG-2 decoders in the DVX and DVX tend platform is ready to act as the important link in between. These modules include versions for both free to air and encrypted services with full support for teletext. The descrambler is based on the DVB Common Interface standard. MPEG-2 decoders share the same user friendly user interface as all other modules in the DVX platform. One example of this is the service selection, which is based on the service name instead of PID numbers of individual components in that service. One of the latest members in the DVX family is the satellite remodulator, which takes the integration one step further with built-in MPEG-2 decoder and Common Interface. This product being the size of one DVX module is ideally suited for operators who need to switch from e.g. D2-MAC reception into DVB-S reception with the output still being analogue PAL signal.

Each DVX module contains a micro-controller with programmable flash memory so it is possible to upload updated application software. Simple configuration tasks can be handled with a programming unit whereas more complicated tasks like PSI/SI processing require the use of CATVisor Commander. CATVisor Commander is the standalone hardware configuration tool for DVX headend modules. All control functions, for example frequency selection, RF, video and audio levels, are programmable and monitorable via DVX's data bus. With CATVisor Commander it is possible to use the DVX-bus to do local configuration or if there is a network controller installed, remote configuration. The CATVisor Commander platform can be extended with application specific extension components. One of these is a PSI/SI Editor for the DVQ devices. The CATVisor EMS System is a client-server based Element Management system for continuous fault and performance monitoring of large Headends as well as HFC and Backbone networks. For configuration management of the network elements it is possible to use the configuration features inside the EMS system. 7 Other Family Members of the DVX Platform DVX tend for Extended Functionality and Specifications For those who are not content with the standard performance and functions of DVX family can select components from the DVX tend family. As the name implies these modules have extended functionalities that include e.g.tv IF interface and balanced audio. DVX tend family can be immediately recognised from BNC, IEC and mini-din connectors. The word extended can also be found from improved specifications such as the important C/N performance and distortion distance. TV converters in this family provide support for automatic diversity switching, which is a mandatory operation in some countries. ATMux TM Drives the Digital Highway ATMux TM is a scalable and a flexible digital solution for DVB signal headend processing and DVB over ATM transmission, which seamlessly provides for interconnection between Super Headend and Regional Headends over dedicated fibre network as well as standard SDH/SONET or ATM network. This solution offers remarkable benefits to the customer that include both MPTS and SPTS solution or a combination of those with a comprehensive service based management system providing exceptionally easy-touse user interface. Fibre Optics with DVO The combined service output from the headend is fed into the access network. In the case of HFC networks, the DVO family, which is part of the DVX platform, caters for the different broadband launching alternatives. The fibre optic products include traditional 1310 nm and 1550 nm technologies for the forward path as well as a variety of return path components. All optical transmitters have a built-in driver amplifier and the pilot generator, which is highly appreciated among customers. The recent addition to the family is the DWDM solution that enables introduction of narrowcast services into the existing fibre network. For traditional coaxial broadband launch there are several alternatives available.
