1 I/ PUTTIG THE QRP COMPAIO O THE AIR 1. Connect the wll trnsformer to the mting connector on the Compnion. Plug the trnsformer into power outlet. 2. Plug the cord lbeled 12 VDC OUTPUT into the QRP PLUS Trnsceiver power socket. 3. Connect cox jumper with SO-239 plugs from the QRP PLUS ntenn connector to the Compnion XCVR connector. 4. Connect n ntenn to the Compnion.. If it is blnced ntenn with twin led or ldder line, connect to binding posts Al nd A2. b. If it is rndom wire ntenn, connect it to binding post Al nd connect jumper between A2 nd GD binding posts. Connect ny counterpoise to A2. c. If it is cox fed ntenn, connect to the SO-239 connector Al nd jumper A2 to GD. 5. Do not trnsmit while in the TUE position. 6 Set the trnsceiver to the desired operting frequency. 7. Switch to TUE position. The receiver will show noise from the tuning bridge. Adjust the L nd C controls for null in the noise s seen on the S meter. The switch 1, 2 will extend the rnge of the C setting if required. When set for the noise null the SWR on trnsmit will be one to one. Remember to switch bck to OPER before trnsmitting. DESCRIPTIO Tuner The tuner is design developed for use with militry mn pck trnsceivers. It fetures n exceptionlly wide mtching rnge nd cler, unmbiguous setting with only two controls. The tuner is inherently blnced nd does not rely on n output blun to feed blnced ntenns. For single ended ntenns, one side is connected to ground. oise Bridge The use of noise bridge for tuning hs the dvntge of ccurte tuning without putting signl on the ir. The bridge provides cler, deep null in the S meter reding when the tuner

2 is mtched. Bttery The bttery is stndrd gel cell. The type selected is used in mny emergency lights nd should be commonly vilble for replcement. A fully chrged bttery will give weekend of csul opertion on the QRP PLUS. Chrger The chrger provides 24 MA constnt current until the bttery is chrged nd then mintins the bttery t 13.8 Volts. The chrge rte is sufficient to keep hed of the QRP PLUS on receive nd will recover overnight from dischrged bttery. CIRCUIT DESCRIPTIO See the schemtic digrm, Fig. 2. Tuner The ntenn tuner is bsed on design developed by Dr. Ulrich Rhode nd published in severl journls. The primry fetures re very wide mtching rnge nd simple djustment with two vrible elements. The impednce in trnsformed down to 12.5 ohms by trnsformer L2. The trnsformer lso llows the rest of the tuner to flot for feeding blnced lods. Mny tuners use blun in the output to mtch blnced lods. With the blun in the rective side of the tuner it cn sturte or become lossy. The trnsformer in the Compnion is on the input, mtched side, voiding these problems. The mtching L network does not need to be reversed becuse of the 12.5 ohm input. Its rnge is extended by the shunt inductor L3 nd the series cpcitor C9. See QST ovember 1992 Pge 51 for description of the design. oise Bridge Zener diode D1 is used s source of wide bnd RF noise. Its noise output is mplified by Q1,2,3 nd ssocited circuitry. The output of the noise genertor is fed to blnced trnsformer Ll. When the impednce presented by the tuner mtches the 5 ohm resistor R8, no noise signl is sent to the trnsceiver. The ttenutor R9,1,11 is used to prevent strong signls from the ntenn msking the noise null.

3 Regultor The wll trnsformer provides 12 VAC for the regultor. SD81 is used s voltge doubler. The 723 cts s current regultor to provide 24 MA chrge current nd regultes the voltge t 13.8 V when the bttery is chrged. R86 is selected to clibrte the 13.8 Volt flot level.
