1 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE Overview The most difficult part of an installation is in knowing where to start and the most important part is starting in the proper start. There are a few very important items to remember when installing/setting up a CRT projector. Mounting the projector can make or break an installation. If the projector is not mounted properly the final image and stability of the image is greatly affected. The more time you spend leveling and making sure the projector is perpendicular to the screen a more stable and better image will be displayed. The following Steps will help in assuring a GREAT picture is always achieved. Note: Always remember to set the ASR feature off when adjusting any setup parameters to avoid any conflicts. 3 Note: The angle of the projector can be varied between ± 15 0 off center. There is a built in angle of To calculate the Throw Distance D use the proper formula from the chart on the previous page. To calculate the straight line distance Y use the formula: this formula takes into consideration the base of the projector is level with the floor/ceiling, using the built in vertical offset. 4 2. REVERSE SCANS (if required) If the projector is not installed in a front screen, floor mount configuration, reverse scan setup will be required. Refer to the following table to determine if reverse scan setup is required. 5 Reversing the yokes The horizontal and / or vertical deflection yokes can be reversed for ceiling or rear screen use. The yoke plugs are located in the positions as shown. To reverse the scan first make sure the projector is turned off and unplugged. Unplug the deflection yoke connector for the Horizontal or Vertical board. Turn the connector over, displaying the Rev. Scan sticker, and reinsert the deflection yoke plug into the connector. Make sure this is done for each color. 3. PERFORM A COMPLETE INITIALIZATION To perform and complete initialization enter the following keystrokes: Util, Service (9), 0901 (password), Projector Initialization (4), Reset Everything (3) 5

6 4. CHECK FLARE ALIGNMENT When reversing the scan some flare alignment may require some adjustment. First check the Flare alignment before performing the following procedure. See the illustration for proper alignment. Procedure: 1. Unplug the projector and remove the four screws and rear cover revealing the Flare/Stigmator ring. 2. Remove the glue securing the flare ring. 3. Plug the projector in and allow a minimum of 30 minutes warm-up. 4. Using a Cross Hatch pattern turn the contrast to 100 and the focus to 0, or until the bright line is easily visible. 5. Adjust the flare, by sliding and/or turning the paddle, so there is equal distortion on both sides of the bright horizontal and vertical lines at the center of the picture. 6. 7 5. CENTER IMAGE IN RASTER To optimize the projectors performance it is essential to center the image in the raster. Procedure: 1. Enter the Convergence mode (any mode is fine). 2. Turn contrast down, below Look in to the RED lens and with the left and right arrow keys center the image on the face of the CRT. 4. Repeat procedure 3 for the BLUE. 5. Exit Convergence and save these settings. 6. Turn Contrast up and enter Green Convergence ( either Interpolated or Random) 7. Turn the Contrast below 20 again. 8. Look in to the GREEN lens and center the Cross Hatch with the left/right and up/down arrow keys. 9. Return Contrast too previous levels. 10. Exit Convergence and save these settings. Note: It is only necessary to center, in a vertical direction, the GREEN since RED and BLUE will be moved to match the GREEN at a later time. 7

8 6. MOUNTING Front Screen Installations Floor Mount Mount the projector on a secured table or cart. Position the projector at the chosen room location with the projector pointing towards the center of the projection screen. The angle of projection, combined with the tilt angle of the screen should direct the reflected image towards the center of the audience. The difference between the projection angle and the screen tilt angle (within a common reference) should be less than 15. You can adjust projection angle and level by adjusting the height of the projector legs. Ceiling Mount Mounting the projector to the ceiling requires the use of the Universal Ceiling Mount ( ) fixture. The mount is shipped from the factory in kit form (with assembly instructions) for assembly and installation by the dealer/installer. Position the projector so that it is pointing toward the center of the projection screen. The angle of projection combined with the tilt angle of the screen should direct the reflected image towards the center of the audience. The difference between the projection angle and the screen tilt angle (within a common reference) should be less than 15. 8

9 Instructions for adjusting projection angle are provided with the fixture kit. Rear Screen When installing a rear screen system, the vertical positioning of the projector is dependent on the type of rear screen being used. There are two basic types of rear screens: optical and diffused. Optical Rear Screen Systems If the system includes an optical rear screen, mount the projector along the center axis of the screen. 9

10 Diffused Rear Screen Systems If the system includes a diffused rear screen, floor mount or ceiling mount the projector so that the image is directed to the center of the audience. Projection tilt should be less than 15. In situations where the space behind the projector is limited, a mirror may be used to fold the optical path. If a diffused screen is used, the projection angle should be less than 15. If an optical screen is used, the optical path between the mirror and the screen should be perpendicular to the screen. Much attention must be given to the positioning of the projector and the mirror. Note: When using a mirror, the calculated throw distance (D) is the summation of D1 and D2. 10

11 ACON II The drawing below shows two common projection system configurations. ACON responds differently for each configuration. The projector configuration is determined by ACON during the Learn Screen process. Learn Screen is always required for a new or changed installation. 11

12 If the installation is rear screen, the Locator Assembly should be mounted in front of the display with an optional Locator Mounting Bracket (kit # ). This is required since the reflected light from a rear screen is not always adequate for the photosensor. The diagram below illustrates the remote mounting for ACON. 12

13 7. OPTICAL ALIGNMENT Optical alignment is required when the projector is initially installed or the throw distance changes. The projector is optically aligned at the factory for use with a 6 foot diagonal screen and a throw distance of 80 inches or 2 meters. Note: The projector should be warmed up for at least 45 minutes before making any adjustments. Optical alignment is both a mechanical and electrical adjustment. The electrical adjustments are stored in the current setup memory. Marquee 8110 and 8500 Optical Alignment 13

14 Procedure: 1. Select GREEN convergence and turn the contrast low. Now look into the GREEN lens and center the raster using the arrow controls on the remote (press zero to erase any previous adjustments). 2. Enter random convergence and center the RED and BLUE raster (press zero to erase any previous adjustments). 3. Mount the projector at the correct throw distance and center the GREEN cross hatch on the screen. 4. Loosen the two allen bolts labeled 'B'. Loosen the four 7/16 bolts labeled 'A' on the top. 5. Physically skew the RED CRT/lens assembly until the vertical lines of the RED test pattern matches the GREEN test pattern, in the center of the image. Retighten the allen bolts. Repeat step 5 for the BLUE. 6. Loosen the rear wing nut on the GREEN lens and defocus slightly. Adjust the large allen bolt on the upper right corner of the lens mounting plate to make the top and bottom of the test pattern equally defocused. As the focus changes it may be necessary to readjust the center focus again. Refocus the center and corners when a even defocused image is achieved. Repeat for the RED and BLUE. This adjustment matches the vertical focusing plane of the lens to the screen. 7. For the RED and BLUE, loosen the rear wing nut and defocus the center. Adjust the large allen bolt on the lower left (opposite corner from the top/bottom adjustment) of the lens mounting plate to make the horizontal center line of the test pattern equally defocused on each side. Refocus the center and corner focus when this is done. 8. Tighten the four bolts labeled 'A' to lock the assembly in place. 9. Adjust Geometry to make a rectangular image that fills the screen. Note: No left/right focus adjustments for GREEN should be required if the projector is centered and perpendicular to the screen. 14

16 Procedure: 1. Select GREEN convergence and turn the contrast low. Now look into the GREEN lens and center the raster using the arrow controls on the remote (press zero to erase any previous adjustments). 2. Enter random convergence and center the RED and BLUE raster (press zero to erase any previous adjustments). 3. Mount the projector at the correct throw distance and center the cross hatch on the screen. 4. Loosen the two 7/16 bolts labeled 'A' and the four allen bolts labeled 'B'. One is located above the RED lens and the other two are underneath. 5. Physically skew the RED CRT/lens assembly until the vertical lines of the RED test pattern match the GREEN test pattern, in the center of the picture. Retighten the bolts labeled A and B on the RED. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for the BLUE. 6. Loosen the rear wing nut on the GREEN lens and defocus slightly. Locate the two allen bolts on the upper right corner of the lens mounting plate The one closer to the top is used to make the top and bottom focus adjustment, while the other locks the adjustment. Adjust the center vertical line of the test pattern to be equally defocused. As the focus changes it may be necessary to readjust the center focus again. Refocus the center and corners when a even defocused image is achieved. Repeat for the RED and BLUE. This adjustment matches the vertical focusing plane of the lens to the screen. 7. For the RED and BLUE, loosen the rear wing nut and defocus the center. Locate the two allen bolts on the upper left corner of the lens mounting plate to make the horizontal center line of the test pattern equally defocused on each side. Refocus the center and corner focus when this is done. 8. Adjust Geometry to make a rectangular image that fills the screen. Note: No left/right focus adjustments for GREEN should be required if the projector is centered and perpendicular to the screen. 16

17 8. PHASE ALIGNMENT To adjust the phase, centering the external image on the screen, enter the Picture Menu by pushing the PIC button on your remote. Select #1, Phase, to display the horizontal and vertical slide bars. With the arrow keys on your remote control you can move the image, in the vertical and horizontal direction, until the external image is centered on the screen. It is easier to center the image with the green image only, since the picture will be out of convergence at this time. 9. GEOMETRY ADJUSTMENTS Geometry functions are accessed through the Geometry Menu. To display this menu, press. Note it is usually easier to adjust display geometry while a test pattern ( )is displayed, preferably the corss hatch. Size The Size function is used to adjust the horizontal and vertical size of the display image. (This adjustment is also available through the Picture Menu). To adjust size, select Size from the Geometry menu. Two slidebars are displayed: a Horizontal Size slidebar and a Vertical Size slidebar. Press or to adjust vertical size and or to adjust horizontal size until the objects within your picture have the proper shape. For example, if there is a circle in your picture, size should be adjusted so that the circle is round, not oval. Note: The Size function should not be used to compensate for aspect ratio mismatches between source images and the projection screen. Not all sources use the same aspect ratio therefore it may not always be possible to fill the entire screen. ("Aspect Ratio" is defined in Appendix A). 17

18 Keystone The Keystone function corrects for keystone geometry distortion. Adjust keystone if the width at the top of the display is not the same as the width at the bottom. For example, the displays below require keystone adjustment. To adjust keystone press or until the top and bottom widths of the display are equal. Side Pincushion The Side Pincushion function corrects for curvature occurring at the sides of the display image. For example, the two displays shown below require side pincushion adjustment. To adjust side pincushion, select Side Pincushion from the Geometry menu then press or until the sides of the image are straight. Top Pincushion The Top Pincushion function corrects for curvature occurring at the top of the display image. For example, the two displays shown below require top pincushion adjustment. To adjust top pincushion, select Top Pincushion from the Geometry menu press until the top of the image is straight. or 18

19 Bottom Pincushion The Bottom Pincushion function corrects for curvature occurring at the bottom of the display image. For example, the two displays shown below require bottom pincushion adjustment. To adjust bottom pincushion, select Bottom Pincushion from the Geometry menu then press or until the bottom of the image is straight. Bow The Bow function corrects for curvature in the vertical direction in the middle of the picture. For example, see the two displays below. To adjust bow, select Bow from the Geometry menu then press or until the center of the image is straight. C Linearity The C Linearity function corrects for gradual non-linearity between the top and bottom or left and right sides of the display image. Examples are shown below. In the first example the top of the image increases in vertical size while the bottom decreases in vertical size. In the second example the right side of the image increases in horizontal size while the left side decreases in horizontal size. Select C Linearity from the Geometry menu. It is best to have a screen full of characters displayed. Or use one of the internal test patterns available by pressing. If there is a horizontal non-linearity, press or until the characters at the top, middle, and bottom of the screen have the same vertical size. If there is a horizontal non-linearity, press or until the characters at the left, middle, and right of the screen have the same horizontal size. 19

20 S Linearity The S Linearity function corrects for vertical and horizontal non-linearities which extend from the center of the display to the top and bottom or left and right. Examples are shown below. Notice how the top and bottom or left and right characters are much smaller in size than the center characters. Select S Linearity from the Geometry menu. It is best to have a screen full of characters displayed. Or use one of the internal test patterns available by pressing. If there is a vertical non-linearity, press or until the characters at the top, middle, and bottom of the screen have the same vertical size. If there is a horizontal non-linearity, press or until the characters at the left, middle, and right of the screen have the same horizontal size. L\R Skew The Skew function corrects for left/right tilting of the display image. For example, the two displays shown below require skew adjustment. To adjust skew, select Skew from the Geometry menu then use or until the center vertical line (as shown) is straight up and down. 20

21 10. GREEN CONVERGENCE (if required) The Convergence Service Menu allows individual zone adjustment of the Green geometry which is not possible in the normal Geometry Menu. To enter Green Convergence adjustments press CONV - #5 Service - Password 0901 and select either #1 Green Interpolated or #2 Green Random Access. For a full description of Green Random and Interpolated Convergence look in Service Setups, Note: Only use Green Random Convergence when it is not possible to use Green Interpolated Convergence. 11. RGB FOCUS Before adjusting the RGB focus: Select Input/Recall to be focused Set the CONTRAST to 75% Set the FOCUS to 50% SET the BRITE to 50% Once in the UTIL Service Menu press 2 to enter RGB focus, press # to select the cross hatch test pattern or external signal, and use the and arrow keys to adjust the focus. Pressing ENTER will change between the three colors and move the adjustment box to the different zones, pressing * will take you in reverse. After Blue static (center) focus is completed, Red is displayed again. With the adjustment box displayed in the top middle section of the screen. Adjust the focus looking at the entire top section of the screen. Pressing ENTER will cycle to the bottom and the left/right regions. Repeat these steps for the Green and Blue colors. When using the external pattern, select a pattern with a lot of detail such as a text pattern for achieving the best focus. Note: if one corner appears soft it may be necessary to adjust two of focus regions to optimize the corner. E.g. adjust the top and left side for the top left corner. 21

22 12(a). STIGMATOR ADJUSTMENT (8500 and 9500) This is where the electronic stigmators are adjusted. Stigmators control the spot size and shape of the electron beam on the CRT face. This has a direct effect of the best focus that can be achieved. To adjust the stigmators: 1. Set CONTRAST = 100, FOCUS = 100, BRITE = Enter the Stigmator adjust routine and use the,, and arrow keys to adjust each zone in turn (see diagram on following page), there are 9 zones for each color. Pressing the * key will take you in reverse order. 3. Once finished the last zone exit and reset CONTRAST and FOCUS to there prior levels. 12(b). STIGMATOR ADJUSTMENT (8000 and 8110) Procedure: 1. Unplug the projector and remove the four screws and cover revealing the neck of the CRT s. 2. Remove the glue securing the stigmator ring. 3. Plug the projector in and allow a minimum of 30 minutes warm-up. 4. Display a dot pattern, the internal test pattern can be used. 5. Turn the contrast and focus to 100, or until the dots are easily visible. 6. Adjust the stigmators, by sliding and/or turning the paddle (see diagram below), until the dots become round in the center of the picture. Refer to the above diagram for proper shape of stigmator. 7. Return the contrast to previous value and focus to

23 13. CONVERGENCE REGISTRATION Convergence Registration is the process of aligning the red and blue image to match the green image. The projectors convergence system provides accurate color registration in 45 discrete convergence zones configured in a 9 by 5 array on the projection screen. Since a different convergence setup is required for each source, convergence settings are saved for each Input or Recall Memory. There are three basic convergence methods available: Guided, Interpolated and Random Access. Any one of these can be selected for performing a registration adjustment. To perform a convergence: Begin by selecting the Input or Recall Memory to be converged. Convergence settings will be saved in the current setup memory. Next, press CONV to display the Convergence menu. Guided Convergence provides a complete guided convergence of the red and blue images onto the green image in all 45 zones. Use this option if you are unfamiliar with the convergence adjustments and want to be guided through the convergence setup. Interpolated Convergence provides a complete convergence similar to Guided but is recommended when the image requires major convergence alignment (and should be used the first time a source is converged). Random Access Convergence allows you to converge a particular area of the display. Any zone may be quickly selected and converged. This option also allows convergence of the blue image on the red image (if preferred to the normal blue on green). 23

24 ACON is an optional feature which provides fast, accurate automatic convergence in all 45 convergence zones. Minimal user intervention is required. If the projector does not include ACON, item 4 in the menu reads ACON (not installed). 14. CONTRAST AND BRIGHTNESS Contrast: The span of the video signal from maximum white to minimum black. The higher the Contrast the greater the span. Too high of a contrast setting will cause blooming. Brightness: Carries the information about the amount of light at each point in the image. To set the Contrast and Brightness properly a PLUGE pattern is required. Contrast is set by looking at the image on the right side of the screen. The contrast should be set so the vertical line is straight up and down with no keystone. As well there should be no over lap of the top two boxes (blooming). While looking at the left side of the image, adjust the Brightness control so the three vertical rectangles are clearly visible. The middle rectangle should be the same level of black as the back ground of the image. 24

25 15. COLOR TEMPERATURE When adjusting the color temperature the contrast and brightness controls should be at there set levels, changing the contrast or brightness can change the color temperature of the image. Room lighting should be at presentation or viewing levels. A gray bar test pattern works the best (minimum two horizontal rows of seven graduations, top row black to white and bottom row white to black). The test pattern should be generated from the equipment being color balanced (e.g. PC or VCR). If you are unable to produce a gray bar pattern, from the equipment being color balanced, the gray bar pattern from a test generator can be used. The generator should be connected at the source using all cables, switchers, interfaces etc. Note: for best results a color temperature meter should be used. Procedure 1. Have contrast, brightness and room lighting at presentation or viewing levels. 2. Enter Color Temperature Setup, Util - Service (9) - Password (0901) - Color Temperature (1) - User Settings (4) 3. Press Enter to display only RED, Adjust the G2 so the black bar is black and the bar next to it is just barley visible. 4. Repeat Step 3 for Green and Blue G2 s. 5. After adjusting the Blue G2 press Enter to display all three colors. Adjust the individual Drives to obtain an even gray scale from black to white. Pressing Tint will cycle through the different colors while displaying all three colors at once. 6. Exit and Save settings. Note: Each number, in the G2 and Drive adjustments, has multiple steps from one number to the next (e.g., 50 to51). 25

26 Adjust Zones This procedure should only be performed with a light meter. When adjusting remember that by increasing the contrast flaring can be introduce in the individual zones, due to over driving the CRT, and it may be necessary to reduce the main (center) contrast to minimize the flaring effect. Procedure 1. Reduce the center (main) contrast to approximately 40. This is to help is reducing flare. 2. Enter Adjust Zones, Util - Service -Password (0901) - Color Temperature (1) - Adjust Zones (5). 3. A solid test pattern is used for this procedure. 4. Using the light meter, measure the center contrast level. By pressing ENTER on the keypad you can move to the 8 different areas for each color. With the andcursor keys you can adjust the contrast for each zone to match the center. Pressing the * key will move the adjustment box in reverse. 5. After all three colors have been adjusted exit and save the new settings. 16. SETUP INPUT/RECALL MEMORIES Input Memories Input memories store display settings for each physical input (i.e., switcher 0, slot 1). When an input is selected, the Input memory for that input becomes the current setup memory and its display settings are used ( unless ASR is on and is triggered). If the input is being selected for the first time, a new Input memory is created. Recall Memories Recall memories, usually used when ASR is required, offer an alternative to using the display settings stored in the Input memory for the selected source. For example, if you have more than one computer which is used, on the same input, you can have a different memories for each computer. One memory could be the input memory and the other could be a recall memory or they could both be different recall memories. Recall memories are identified by a two digit number. Any number from 01 to 99 can be assigned, although only a total 80 memory spaces exist for both Input and Recall memories. To select a Recall memory press recall m, n where: m = the 1 st digit of the Recall memory number n = the 2 nd digit of the Recall memory number 26

27 For example, to select Recall memory 01, press recall 0, 1. Recall memory 01 then becomes the current setup memory and its settings will be used for the current input. Locking Setup Memories Setup memories may be locked or unlocked. Locking a setup memory prevents adjustments to display settings from being saved in that memory. For example, if recall memory 01 is locked and selected, then brightness is adjusted, the new brightness setting is only temporary and not saved in to the current Recall memory. If the setup memory is then reentered, the original brightness setting will be restored. Note: When a locked setup memory is selected a key icon is displayed, beside the memory, in the source message box. To lock or unlock the current setup memory, select option 3 from the Source Setup menu (Util 1, 3). 17. SETUP NEXT SOURCE Repeat Steps 8, 9, 10, 11 (center focus only), Note: Stigmators and the RGB Dynamic Focus are global settings and will effect all sources. 18. SETUP CHANNEL LIST The Channel List is a user-programmable list of sources and projector setups, providing a easier way to select different setups. Setup parameters are not stored in the Channel List, but it allows you to select which Input and Recall memories for each source. The Channel List allows you to assign a source to a 1 or 2 digit number, from 01 to 99. To display or program the Channel List select 2 from the Utilities menu. Your programming options are channel number, source name, input location, Recall memory and Up/Down field. Channel Lists are especially useful when multiple sources are connected to a single input with the same scan rates and different setups. This allows you to program different Recall memories for each source and have the proper setup selected, if a control system is being used the control system can be programmed to call the proper channel requiring less steps then call the proper Recall memory. There are three different ways to select a preprogrammed Channel: enter their assigned two digit channel number, enter a single digit channel number (for Channels 1 to 9) or use the up/down arrow keys. The single digit selection method is determined by the user preferences. 27

28 Direct Channel Selection To select a channel, press m, n. where: m = the 1 st digit of the channel number n = the 2 nd digit of the channel number The projector switches to, and displays, the source assigned to the channel number. Up/Down Channel Selection This method of source selection uses the up/down arrow keys on the keypad. To make a selection: Press Source followed by or arrow. Each time a arrow key is pressed, a channel number (and name) is displayed on the screen. When the channel number you want is displayed, simply wait to allow the projector to switch to the source defined by the channel. 19. PROJECTOR NUMBERING When more than one projector is being installed it is usually preferred to number the individual projectors for communications. The Projector factory default number is 000. To change this number press UTIL + Remote Control Options (#6) + Communications Setup (#2) + ### (enter number with numeric keypad). 20. TURN ASR ON (if required) 28
